“The Cask of Amontillado” Revenge can be a primitive justice. Paying someone back for their harmful actions can feel quite rewarding at times. In “The Cask of Amontillado” written by Edgar Allen Poe, Poe creates a mood of suspense and mystery to accompany his theme of revenge.
First of all, Poe develops his mood of suspense and mystery through his vivid imagery. Poe uses many examples of imagery such as the description of the carnival, characters, the walk through the catacombs, and much more to add mystery and intrigue into the story. In the beginning of the story Poe talks about the carnival. Usually a fun, happy time, Poe changes the mood by using words like “dusk’’ and “madness”. ‘’ It was about dusk, one evening during the supreme madness of the carnival season…” (Poe 344). Poe takes away the fun, light atmosphere and gives it a dark twist. Another example of imagery in the story are the bones that are in the catacombs where they are walking. “ From the fourth the bones had been thrown down, and lay promiscuously upon the earth, forming at one point a mound of some size.” (Poe 349). Montressors’ reaction to him murdering his friend had irony in itself. “ My heart grew sick- on account of the dampness of the catacombs.” (Poe 351). His heart grew sick because of the weather and the niter on the walls. He never grew sick because he just buried his friend alive. Another way Poe uses irony is when Fortunato and Montressor make a toast. Fortunato says , “ I drink,” he said, “ to the buried that repose around us.” While Montressor replies with, “ And I to your long life.” This is ironic because later on in the story Montressor chains Fortunato up and he buries him inside of a wall. Being able to feel the world in any story is an excellent way to make readers get involved in it, and Connell does this by using imagery. Connell writes, “The sensuous drowsiness of the night was on him. ‘It’s so dark,’ he thought, ‘that I could sleep without closing my eyes; the night would be my eyelids’”(Connell 217). The mood of this quote can make any reader feel drowsy because of the way Connell describes the night. Again this is something Poe cannot achieve. For example, Poe writes, “I took from their sconces two flambeaux, and giving one to Fortunato, bowed him through several suites of rooms to the archway that led into the vaults. I passed down a long and winding staircase, requesting him to be cautious as he followed. We came at the length to the foot of the descent and stood together upon the damp ground of the catacombs of the Montresors” (Poe 867). Montresor explains to Fortunato that he is of the masons. Fortunato asks Montresor for a sign of being a mason. This is an example of dramatic irony because even though the reader knows the truth behind the story, Fortunato does not. In the passage Poe states, “It is this, I answered, producing a towel from beneath the folds of my roquelaure.” (pg. 239). Poe also states in the passage, “You are not of the masons.” (pg. 239). Set in an unspecified Italian city and an unidentified year, the Cask of Amontillado is a short story that majorly revolves on revenge. Written by the much-celebrated literary expert Edgar Allan Poe, the short story is centered on the narrator who is hell bent exerting revenge on a friend who caused him great pain.
With a premeditated motive to commit such an act, the culprit, Montressor, thinks, constructs and orchestrates a presumed murder against his insulter, Fortunado. “Poe begins by describing, in characteristically precise and logical detail, Montresor’s (and Poe’s) idea of perfect revenge. At the same time, he needed to end his story by telling how his revenge had affected him. When Fortunatosays, “For the love of god, Montresor!” and Montresor repeats, “Yes, for the love of God,” Poe is indicating that Montresor is already experiencing the closure he sought”(Delaney 39) Unbeknownst why he wants retribution, or what it is that his victim has done to compel Montressor to kill him. What is given is a recount of the night under discussion.
Irony is also used throughout this tale. The use of revenge in this story shows irony. Montressor avenges himself by fooling Fortunato into literally walking into his own grave. Fortunato pursues the "cask" which ends up being his own casket. Montressor even asks Fortunato repeatedly whether he would like to turn back.
Dramatic irony is used when we know, or draw a conclusion of, what will happen to Fortunato, although he continues his descent into the catacombs in pursuit of the Amontillado. The sense of revenge reaches its highest peak when Poe uses irony for Montresor to inform us that he will smile in Fortunato's face while using his wine to lure him into the catacombs to taste his imaginary Amontillado. During this scene like a fool in his costume while Montresor is leading him to his death bed. This whole time Montresor plays very innocent.
Irony is used very often by Poe. Irony is when something occurs that is the exact opposite of how it should be or seem. Irony varies in that it may be displayed through someone’s actions or an ironic happening. An example of irony in someone’s action are in the Cask of Amontillado is when Montressor repeatedly seems concerned for Fortunato’s health, even though his real intentions are to kill him. It also may be considered ironic that Poe named the enemy of Monstressor, Fortunato. Being that Fortunato means fortunate or lucky in Italian, it is ironic that he is very unlucky in that he his buried alive in a wall.
Edgar Allen Poe’s gruesomely fascinating tale of vengeance and murder, “The Cask of Amontillado”, achieves its effect only through its usage of the first person point of view. This unusual perspective enables the reader to view the characters and conflicts through the eyes of the narrator, as he first discusses and justifies, and eventually, carries out his plans for the ruthless murder of his friend. The eerie tone and disorienting and materialistically-related setting of the story contribute to its theme of defending one’s honor and name and avenging all wrongdoings, even something so small as an insult.

Poe’s excellent use of Gothicism within the story sets the perfect tone for a dark and sinister plot of murder to unfold. “The Cask of Amontillado” simply overflows with various themes and other literary elements that result from Poe’s Gothic style of writing. Of these various themes, one that tends to dominant the story as a whole is the theme of revenge, which Poe supports with his sophisticated use of direct and indirect factors, irony, and symbolism.
