In this film The Welton is a traditional educational institution. The students, especially the main character Neil Perry is expected to perform at a high level. Neil’s father has high expectations for him and has went through a lot to get him into the institution. The overall intent of this film is to get the students in a traditional setting to break away from conformity. The intent is also for viewers of the film to believe in what they want and do whatever they put their minds to. Also to get them to dig deep into the realism and romanticism of poetry. To find creativity within themselves and find some passion and creativity they haven’t seen before. They find solitude in poetry and within the “Dead Poet’s Society”. Neil got an acting part in the schools play and forged a letter with his dads name for consent. Neil’s professor encourages him to take the roll in the play, but didn’t realize Neil had forged the letter meaning his dad didn’t know about him acting. Neil uses the Dead Poets Society to find himself and help him believe that he can do great things once he puts his mind to it. The students start out as any regular students almost like robots coming to school doing the bare minimum to get by, but at the intuitions the students learn the progressive and traditional characteristics of the institution and carry that with them for life. Then soon after the films are started the teachers and professors give the clueless and curious students a voice. These voices being the main conflict of these movies and or documentaries. For example, when you are in college to get college credits they come from test like the calculus placement test. But, in a dead pool society the actual society from when their teacher was a student at The Welton. In the book, Phineas is a very outgoing character who plays by his own rules. He does not care about what other people think about him and is very good at charming his teachers. Neil also has these characteristics, he is a leading figure to the other boys in his friend group and does not let anyone defy him, not even his father. A big similarity between these two characters is the fact that they both was to form prohibited societies. Phineas forms the Super Suicide Society of the Summer Session. He makes the rule that him and Gene must always jump from the tree into the lake before every meeting. If one of their friends wanted to become a member, they too had to jump from the tree (page 31). Neil reformed the Dead Poets Society, originally formed by their teacher, Mr. Keating. Both Neil and Phineas knew that if they were caught they’d be in trouble, but this did not stop them. In both stories, these characters passions are taking away from them and they respond in similar ways. When Phineas broke his leg, he could no longer play sports. Playing sports was his passion and since he could no longer play, he told Gene “…if I can’t play sports, you’re going to play them for me…” (page 85). Neil loved acting, but his father wanted him to go to medical school to be a doctor. By reading the Bible, a direct instruction of living life by His word, Christians can find this comfort and happiness. To the boys attending the poetry class, Keating is a source of the same comfort. Because of Keating’s helpful instruction and caring attitude towards the boys, his character resembles the wise image of God. Keating often has to advise the students to practice free will with caution because of society’s dramatic responses to transcendental actions. In one scene, Neil is confronted by his selfish father, who stringently demands his son to not take part in the school’s play. Later, Neil goes to Keating for advice on what choice to make and explains that he is the only person who Neil can really talk to about his true feelings. Keating then tells Neil to honestly tell the narrow-minded father about what he really wants to do with his life. This advice follows the importance of self-reliance. “Insist on yourself; never imitate. Your own gift you can present every moment with the cumulative force of a whole life's cultivation; but of the adopted talent of another you have only an extemporaneous half possession” (Emerson). They weren’t violent protesters but instead people who challenged the social norm and encouraged non-conformity. The movie Dead Poet's Society focuses on a group of highschoolers in an overbearing high school and their teacher, Mr. Keating. The film chronicles the histories of three fathers, and manages to relates and link their events and situations. First is Mitchell Stephens and his relationship with his drug-addict daughter. Second is Sam, and the secret affair he is having with his young daughter Nicole. He is somewhat of a narcissistic character because of his preoccupation with himself and pleasing himself, and his lack of empathy throughout the film for the others in the town. Third is Billy, who loves his two children so much that he follows behind the school bus every day waving at them. Billy is also having an affair with a married woman who owns the town’s only motel. On the exterior the town is an average place with good people just living their lives. But, beneath all the small town simplicity is a web of lies and secrets, some which must be dealt with in the face of this tragedy.
The movie, Dead Poets Society truly captures the essence of the conformities that children are facing. The difference is letting the hourglass run out of time, or making the best of time, facing tough challenges along the way. Todd Anderson makes the best out of his time thanks to the teaching of Mr. Keating, his beloved English teacher. From a misunderstood adolescent to a courageous man, Todd shows his true colors and releases the inferior thoughts stirring up in his developing, young body. In the end, romanticism crushes idealism with power and envy, showing the eye-opening ways that a teacher can contribute to such a tightly wound academy such as Welton.
Director Peter Weir, director of The Truman Show, presents the importance of individuality and speaking up in his movie Dead Poets Society, a fictional but realistic story that tells the story of a group of friends at the Wellington Academy prep school and their interactions with their new English teacher, John Keating (Robin Williams). Keating teaches the boys life lessons through some interesting teaching methods that end up changing his students’ approach to life’s challenging situations. Throughout watching Dead Poets Society, I found myself liking the movie more and more as it progressed.

Post modernism is a very difficult concept to define. A French philosopher once defined post modernism as an "incredulity toward all meta narratives," which basically means a skeptical attitude toward all claims of absolute truth. Post modern writers use elements and techniques that provoke the reader to question their reading experience and scrutinize their own personal understanding of life and the values of their society. There are excellent examples of post modern writers using elements of post modern writing, such as irony, magic realism and fragmentation in the short stories read in Ms. Reynolds's English 4U class. The use of post modern elements in these short stories forces the reader to further their reading experience by going more in depth into the writing and figuring out how the story is significant to them and their view on the world.
Tom Schulman’s Dead Poets Society serves as a fictitious but accurate account of the Transcendentalist experiment in which a group of boys—led and encouraged by their English teacher Mr. Keating—liberate themselves from the order and tradition of Welton Academy in order to discover their own selves and wills. These teachings of free thought, individualism, and nonconformity, replete with platitudinous or otherwise vague and meaningless language, become the main impetus for the students’ eventual subversion of legitimate authority and devolution into chaos, errors which can be seen as the irreducible cause of their sorrows and which make the screenplay ultimately portray the futility of the Transcendentalist cause and the horrors its misapplications can manifest.
George Orwell once wrote “If the war didn’t happen to kill you, it was bound to start you thinking.” He is referring to the impact which World War One had on the United States of America. It affected both those fighting and the home front, including wives and children of war soldiers. The brutality of the war opened an eye for the Americans, which influenced an expression of the horrifying thoughts brought on by the war through the use of literature. Due to World War One, Journalism became more popular, Romanticism moved to the Realism movement, and poetry moved from being metaphorical to being straightforward.
The Dream of American Romanticism The Romantic Movement seized America from 1800 to 1860. A romantic is the name given to those who value feeling and intuition over reason (Arpin 162). During this time period, Americans were migrating westward to explore the land of America. Moving towards the countryside, they pursued beauty and tried evading their daily troubles. Romantics argued that art rather than science could best express universal truth (The Romantic Period, 1820-1860: Essayists and Poets). The romantics took a less rational approach with their beliefs. Rationalists and romantics had a very different look on cities. Rationalists looked at them as a place for success. Romantics ran from these cities viewing them as a place of poverty and death. During this time Americans felt a sense of freedom from English rule. Frontier promised opportunity for expansion, growth, freedom; Europe lacked this element (American Romanticism Overview). Americans felt the need to explore science and the land of North America. This movement brought literature of fireside poetry to the American Hero. Over the course of the American Romantic Period, focusing on emotions, changed the way Americans comprehended upward mobility in the American dream, which in turn changed the way authors wrote and lived their lives. The numerous characteristics of the romantic period helped shape the era. Romantics obsessed over the idea of individuality. They felt the need to have self-expression. The students re-institute a secret society that Keating used to run called the Dead Poets Society. The society meet in an old cave and recite famous poetry and works of their own. Problems soon start to arise when the actions of the students become unfavorable with the conformist attitudes of both the school and the boys parents. How it relates to self-discovery: Dead poets society relates to the area of self-discovery in many ways. Most people find out something about themselves through their experiences.
During the time-period when they authored this essay, the commonly held notion amongst people was that “In order to judge the poet’s performance, we must know what he intended.”, and this notion led to what is termed the ‘Intentional fallacy’. However, Wimsatt and Beardsley argue that the intention, i.e., the design or plan in the author’s mind, of the author is neither available nor desirable for judging the success of a work of literary art. It is not available because the author will most certainly not be beside the reader when he/she reads the text, and not desirable because intention as mentioned already is nothing but the author’s attitude towards his work, the way he felt while writing the text and what made him write that particular piece of writing and these factors might distract the reader from deciphering the meaning from the text. This method of reading a text without any biographical or historical background of either the poem or the poet practiced by the New Critics was known as ‘Closed Reading’. This stemmed from their belief in the autonomy of the text.
