493 Racism and Society Racism seems evitable in today’s society. Everywhere we look examples of racism are depicted; not just in the United States but all around the world. Most countries social structure is based off wealth, social status and ethnicity. 1 As defined in Racism—what will it take to end it? Featuring Cynthia Silva Parker she defines racism is defined as “a system of oppression created to justify social, political and economic hierarchy,” (Parker, 2014). Parker speaks about educational differences and stereotypes places on minorities. For example, a young African-American male can have the same GPA as his companion who is a young Caucasian male, they can both apply to the same university and only the Caucasian student will be admitted. This can be considered an example of racial bias.
Parker also discusses racial profiling. She tells the audience a story about a situation where two Caucasian men along with another African-American man are asked why they are at a house where a noise complaint occurred. The two white men point to the house diagonally across the street and the police

African-American people love watermelon and grape soda, Asians only eat rice, Hispanics steal jobs, etc. These are only a few of the stereotypes that people judge each other due to their ethnic background or the color of their skin. Stereotypes define people in America and all around the world. In the video India’s inhuman practice of manual scavenging and untouchability, created by Ashif Shaikh depicts a woman in India whose job is to manually clean up all the waste product in the village. The woman did not choose this life, however in India there is a distinct social hierarchy with very little ability for social advancement. In India, her job is considered vile which causes her to be in a social class known as the “untouchables,” most likely her children and the rest of her linage will be considered one
Many minority groups describe racism and other forms of discrimination as being more than just prejudiced towards people based on certain characteristics. Prejudice plays a large role in what is considered to be racism, but it also consists of having a dominant position in society and power to institute and take advantage of their racism. This dominant group of people have the most power, the greatest privileges, and what’s considered to be the highest social status. They use their power to provide themselves with (easier) access to resources like housing, education, jobs, food, health, legal protection, and et cetera. On the other hand, the subordinate group of people are singled out for unequal treatment and are regarded as “objects” of collective discrimination. They are provided with inferior education, food, jobs, healthcare and et cetera.

Next, Institutional or systemic racism refers to the laws, policies, practices, rules and procedures that operate within organisations, societal structures and the broader community to the advantage of the dominant group or groups and to the detriment and disadvantage of other groups. We have a long history of racism in America that has been structured to favor White people. Structural racism can be defined as, “a system in which public policies, institutional practices, cultural representations, and other norms work in various, often reinforcing ways to perpetuate racial group inequity. It identifies the dimensions of our history and culture that have allowed privileges associated with “whiteness” and disadvantages associated with “color” to endure and adapt over time”(Structural Racism, 2004,p. 11). Racial discrimination is a pertinent issue in the United States. Although race relations may seem to have improved over the decades in actuality, it has evolved into a subtler form and now lurks in institutions. Racist and racism are provocative words in American society. To some, they become curse words. They are descriptive words of reality that cannot be denied. Some people believe that race is the primary determinant of human abilities and capacities and behave as if racial differences produce inherent superiorities. People of color are often injured by these judgements and actions whether they are directly or indirectly racist. Just as individuals can act in racist ways, so can institutions. Institutions can be overtly or inherently racist. Institutions can also injure people. The outcome is nonetheless racist, if not intentional (Randall).
