Racism in schools today A group of white high school students in Mississippi placed a noose around a black student’s neck and “yanked backward”. According to an NAACP leader, who described the incident Monday and demanded that it needed to be treated as a hate crime. Racism and prejudices still show commonly in our culture today. This paper is going to connect the sociological ideas of racism, discrimination and sterotyping.

While walking through the halls on October 13th, black student and football player at Stone High School in Wiggins, Miss., was suddenly surrounded by as many as four white students. The students then tossed a rope around his neck, acting as if it was a noose and pulled tightly. “This is 2016, not 1916. This is America. This is a place where children should go to school and feel safe in their environment.” Sociologically we can compare this to institutional racism, racism that has become structured into existing social institutions. If a student can have something this terrible happen to them then you can only infer that this type of behavior has happened before. Since no action has disciplinary action has been taken against the white students, this could be an example of the institution thinking it’s okay. This institution has assumedly has had similar problems that include race but hasn’t done anything about it making it slowly lead to this problem, which in return structures the school around an idea that racism is okay. If the school had fixed smaller problems with race before, then institutional racism wouldn’t be a problem
In one incident when a white teenager Deryl Dedman ran over his truck over Black guy James Craig Anderson by passing a racial slur, “ I ran that nigger over” (Rankine 94)(10). This shows the white’s extra ordinary powers to oppress the black community and the failure of legal system
This power keeps the behavior of the oppressed well within the set guidelines of the oppressor (Freire, 2000, pg. 47). Critical Race Theory outlines this system of oppression as it relates to white and non-white races. By using the critical race theory coupled with the system of oppression described by Freire (2000), I propose that within the system of oppression, the oppressor must keep its own members in line with the prescribed guidelines by reinforcing the social norms from birth. Freire (2000) suggest that the interest of the oppressors lie in “changing the consciousness of the oppressed not the system” (pg.34). Identifying as white, therefore, starts at birth when members of the white class work to reinforce social norms that began with our founding fathers at Plymouth Rock. This long history of white privilege was taught to me and I continue to teach it to my children. As an educator of white affluent high school students, I believe we provide college and career counseling based on this white privilege system of oppression as well. Next, Institutional or systemic racism refers to the laws, policies, practices, rules and procedures that operate within organisations, societal structures and the broader community to the advantage of the dominant group or groups and to the detriment and disadvantage of other groups. Institutional racism may be intentional or unintentional. Jim Crowe is a great example of institutional racism. Jim Crow laws were the name of the racist caste system put in place to segregate African Americans, Hispanics and any ethnic minority. We have a long history of racism in America that has been structured to favor White people. Structural racism can be defined as, “a system in which public policies, institutional practices, cultural representations, and other norms work in various, often reinforcing ways to perpetuate racial group inequity. Many people claim that racism no longer exists; however, the minorities’ struggle with injustice is ubiquitous. Since there is a mass incarceration of African Americans, it is believed that African Americans are the cause of the severe increase of crimes. This belief has been sent out implicitly by the ruling class through the media. The media send out coded messages that are framed in abstract neutral language that play on white resentment that targets minorities. Disproportionate arrest is the result of racial disparities in the criminal justice system rather than disproportion in offenders. Discrimination has always been there between blacks and whites. Since the 1800s where racial issues and differences started flourishing till today, we can still find people of different colors treated unequally. “[R]acial differences are more in the mind than in the genes. Racist and racism are provocative words in American society. To some, they become curse words. They are descriptive words of reality that cannot be denied. Some people believe that race is the primary determinant of human abilities and capacities and behave as if racial differences produce inherent superiorities. People of color are often injured by these judgements and actions whether they are directly or indirectly racist. Just as individuals can act in racist ways, so can institutions. In Ernes J. Gaines novel A Lesson Before Dying, tells a story that was during late 1940. The 1940’s were times that were separation and racism. During that Time African Americans had no say in society. In their lifetime, one in three African American men can expect to go to jail because of their skin color. Racial Justice and profiling is a huge issue in America because innocent men and women are being targeted because of their skin color.
