The Crucible by Arthor Miller, starts of with some of the village girls dancing in the woods when they are caught by Parris. The next day Parris daughter wouldn't not wake up and neither would the Puttams girl. So the towns people started to call witch craft on the girls for dance in the woods was not acceptable at the time. The girl started to get nervous and didn’t want to be accused so they confessed and then say they saw people with the devil. The trails of witch craft started with the girls as the witnesses and would pretend to faint or be choked but the accused. One of the girls was Abigail Willaims who had an affair with John Procter so she accused his wife of being a witch so she could have John. John went to the courts with friend

When the boys first arrived on the island, their behaviour was civilized and they attempted to convince themselves that they would soon be rescued by their parents. As the days passed, the boys began to open their eyes and realized that sitting around was not going to benefit them in any way, and most importantly it would not help them survive. Because of their new unrestricted life on the island, the boys become ruthless and replaced their previous identity.
Growing up Abigail never attended a real school; she was barely even home-schooled. At home she hardly learned to read and write, and she was taught little music or dance to develop the girly charm. During this time the colonies acted as though education for females was not a necessity so when Abigail was taught it happened at home and she was usually taught by her parents, older sister, or her grandparents. Abigail was never taught the rules of writing and it was not until the marriage of her older sister Mary to Richard Cranch that allowed her to get involved with literature. “To our dear and venerable Brother Cranch do I attribute my early taste for letters; and for the nurture and cultivation of those qualities which have since afforded me much pleasure and satisfaction.” It was because of Mr. Cranch that Abigail learned of her writing techniques that later played a large role in her life. The literary works of many men opened Abigail to a new world of literacy. It was from writers like John Thomson that gave Abigail a sense of pleasure in reading...

Despite her beliefs threatening both civil and ecclesiastical law, Hutchinson’s presence was not immediately removed from the community, for she “appeared again; (she had been licensed by the court, in regard she had given hope of her repentance, to at Mr. Cotton’s house that both he and Mr. Davenport might have more opportunity to deal with her)”. In dragging out Mrs. Hutchinson’s case, she still continued to defy the wishes of the church, “much to the astonishment of all the assembly”, displaying another instance of tolerance because she still lingers in the community. “So that after much time and many arguments had been spent to bring her to see her sin, but all in vain, the church with one consent cast her out”.
In Act 1, Scene 1 of the Crucible, Arthur Miller’s theme is evident when Abigail worryingly puts all the blame on tituba because she knows that Tituba’s race puts her at a disadvantage, thus leading to tituba lying for her own safety. Passionately trying to seek answers Parris threateningly screams, “ You will confess yourself or I will take you out and whip you to your death, Tituba!”(Miller 24) Tituba fearfully replies, “ No--no, don’t hang Tituba. I tell him I don’t desire to work for him, sir.” (24). In the quote, Parris didn’t like that tituba didn’t tell him she dealt with the devil so he threatened to kill her. Historically whipping was a method to abuse or punish slaves for misbehaving. After the beatings if still alive the slaves will suffer mental and physical distress. This image of a brutal death
Her father and grandfather (her mother’s father) were both clergymen of the Church of England (Isabella Bird Facts). Bird’s affiliation with the Anglican church is apparent in letter twelve of A Lady’s Life in the Rocky Mountains when she chooses to visit an Episcopal church in Denver. It is important to note that Bird was not only Anglican but evangelical as well. John Bowen, a modern day evangelical Anglican and Doctor of Ministry, describes evangelicals as the “part of the Christian community which emphasizes the importance of the Bible as the primary source of the church’s authority, and the Gospel as the source of the church’s vitality”. Bird’s admiration for scripture and constant quotation of it throughout her letters as well as her thoughts about the Chalmers, discourse with Mountian Jim, and view of nature all serve to prove that her upbringing in an evangelical Anglican home has had a significant impact on her spiritual

In the book, The Lord of the Flies written by William Golding, when the book states, “What are we? Humans? Or animals? Or Savages?” (91), this quote shows the author is trying to give the message that in our society, we tend to act as humans, and at the same time, animals. For example, in December 1955 until December 1956, a woman named Rosa Parks had inspired many people to peacefully protest the lack of civil rights for the African Americans of her time by not riding the public buses because African Americans were forced to sit in the back of the bus; therefore, behind all of the white people. Rather than leading violent riots about the issue, she chose to find a peaceful solution, unlike white nationalists in Charlottesville, Virginia

The first reason kit should allow Prudence to testify is for proof. Prudence’s testimony would make kits case to not being a witch extremely strong. It would prove that all of the writings spelling out ‘Prudence’ in the notebook weren’t kit casting a spell. Simply, it was just Prudence writing her own name. Also, it would show all of the people that Hannah was not a witch. Hannah was just being kind to both of the girls and was letting kit tutor Prudence at her house. Finally, kits uncle would notice that kit disobeyed his commands to do something good for another little girl. Prudence was the best piece of evidence kit had and kit shouldn’t let

...eading and studying the definitions set forth by Bartholomae and Petrosky, not only does the reader categorize Tompkins as an effectively strong reader, the readers see two other main points. The first point is that Tompkins's strong writing ability can be directly linked to her ability to read "strongly" based on the ideas of Bartholomae and Petrosky. The final point noticed, was that without either the introduction to Ways of Reading or Indians, either reading would possibly lose validity. Each work studied in this duo, appears to aid the others' ideas and arguments. The analysis and perspectives utilized in Indians are conveyed through the processes described in the introduction to Ways of Reading. Vice versa, the arguments made toward the makeup of a "strong reader" would not have been feasibly possible to illustrate without examples such as Jane Tompkins essay.
