Postlapsarianism has become a major factor in most short stories we have read in this class. To define postlapsarianism I will use another definition to go along with it, prelapsarianism. Prelapsarianism, is the time before the fall of man. Like a child; innocent and unspoiled, prelapsarianism is before the knowledge of sex and death, or Aros and Thanatos, the two most interesting subjects known to man. In knowing this you can decipher what postlapsarianism is, the after effect of this knowledge. Postlapsarianism is the fall of man, the experience portion of your life. The man disagrees for whatever reason he has and wants an abortion, whether or not this is the best option is unclear, but ultimately it is not his choice. This is with direct correlation to postlapsarianism. The man has gone through the innocence stage, learned about sex and death, and now no longer has complete control over his life. Although “Hills Like White Elephants” does not show how the world deals with postlapsarianism directly, it shows an amazing depiction on how it effects human beings in the real world. “Araby” is a bildungsroman story, about coming of age, the passing through innocence to experience. This story takes place in Ireland, but in the boys dreams he visualizes Araby, a very exotic or “sexy” setting, in the east, similar setting to Aladin. It is a place of high wealth and romance, the perfect setting for a young boy to come about his sexuality. He visualizes a woman in Araby, and wants to give her all the gifts he can, including a chalice from the church. The problem with this twelve year old boy giving this woman a chalice is that the chalice is used to carry Jesus’s blood, and in a very religious place of Dublin, Ireland, this would be a horrible sin to use a chalice as a form of sexuality. The young boy in this story wants to confess his love for Meghan’s sister but does not understand how or why he wants to do this. His mind is trying to pass over from innocence to experience, prelapsarianism to postlapsarianism, but the people surrounding him do not give him the information to complete this change. As a result of this, the young boy becomes frustrated and angry, but he does not exactly know why. The protagonist of Araby is a young boy who is infatuated with his friend Mangan 's sister. The setting, and the introduction of the this woman is nearly identical to that in A&P. Joyce 's narrator spends his time “lay[ing] on the floor in the front parlour watching [Magnan 's sister 's] door” (Joyce 182). Immediately from the outset of the story, Joyce has rendered the narrator as someone who frivolously awaits his female interest with no other motivation. The main character then finally encounters Magnan 's sister personally, where she tells him about a bazaar near town called Araby. Joyce 's protagonist is shocked when Magnan 's sister “addresse[s] the first words to [him]” (Joyce 183) as he has spent a plethora of time yearning for an interaction with her. Joyce has implemented the idea into Araby that males are inherently reliant on females. Interestingly, Joyce has incorporated another male character in his story that is presented as inferior to his female counterpart. These are some of his motivating thoughts as he pleads his case for terminating the pregnancy. He chooses his words advantageously, almost deceitfully, when trying to convince the girl that an abortion is easy surgery: "It's not really an operation at all" (275). Those familiar with the abortion procedure can affirm that it is an operation, and rarely a simple one. This remark reveals how desperate he is to make the decision for the girl.

In the short story, Hills like white elephants, Jig gets persuaded into abortion without making her own decision. Jig needs to know the ins and outs about abortion before making a decision. Jig has to have a lot of knowledge about abortion before making a decision. Many people can relate to the struggle Jig goes through in the story, because we tend to make decisions based on others happiness. Jig’s mate is unhappy with the pregnancy and wants Jig to get an abortion. We do not hear what the mother of the baby really wants. Even though it is a delicate topic, it is well aware and popular. Deciding on having an abortion is a huge decision and should be looked over many times before falling on one decision. Before Jig makes a life changing decision, it is very important that she gets the right amount of information that will help her make choice carefully and educationally.

Although “Araby” is a fairly short story, author James Joyce does a remarkable job of discussing some very deep issues within it. On the surface it appears to be a story of a boy's trip to the market to get a gift for the girl he has a crush on. Yet deeper down it is about a lonely boy who makes a pilgrimage to an eastern-styled bazaar in hopes that it will somehow alleviate his miserable life. James Joyce’s uses the boy in “Araby” to expose a story of isolation and lack of control. These themes of alienation and control are ultimately linked because it will be seen that the source of the boy's emotional distance is his lack of control over his life.
In our society, there are many ethical dilemmas that we are faced with that are virtually impossible to solve. One of the most difficult and controversial issues that we are faced with is abortion. There are many strong arguments both for and against the right to have an abortion which are so complicated that it becomes impossible to resolve. The complexity of this issue lies in the different aspects of the argument. The essence of a person, rights, and who is entitled to these rights, are a few of the many aspects which are very difficult to define. There are also issues of what circumstances would justify abortion. Because the issue of abortion is virtually impossible to solve, all one can hope to do is understand the different aspects of the argument so that if he or she is faced with that issue in their own lives, they would be able to make educated and thoughtful decisions in dealing with it.

There is a small amount of people who are nonchalant on the subject. Women have abortions for many different reasons and according to certain groups these reasons are either justified or not. Pro-life individuals along with religion are sanguine that abortion is ethically and morally erroneous. Whereas those who are pro-choice say that abortion is inconsequential and the mother’s choice is more important than the fetus. Reasons to not get an abortion include risks involved in receiving an abortion. In some cases death can occur. However, there are other alternatives to abortion. For example, raising the child and adoption.
