Imagine you have just sent your 17-year-old son off to school one morning, he is on the school’s varsity swim team. He has been promised acceptance into the University of Indianapolis, the president of the University already loves him, you are exceedingly proud. Your day goes by normally until you receive a call. Suddenly your stomach drops, you have just been informed your son, your child, your boy, has been shot dead by a deranged man with full access to an arsenal of weapons. This is the horrifying reality for the parents of Nicholas Dworet. Nicholas was just one of the 17 innocent people killed in the Parkland shooting.

High School shooting better known as the Parkland shooting was caused by a deranged man who, despite being very mentally unstable, was able to buy an assault rifle from his local gun distributor. The reaction of Stoneman Douglas students after the shooting was outrage. They were rightfully in grief and spoke out against the injustice that is a lack of gun control. Students who have become major gun control activists are now facing discrimination, even death threats, for their fight. Parkland is an example of the disturbing lengths gun owners and organizations will go to protect their horrid ideology. Discriminatory shootings have continued to be a worry all over the country. The E.O. Green shooting despite now being 10 years old still has fresh wounds shows how horrific discrimination can be. It must be pressed that those who are not only mentally unstable but also have access to guns are the bane of all minority groups in the US.
Those opposed to gun control claim that the 2nd Amendment protects their personal right to own a firearm. The 2nd Amendment makes the statement a “well-regulated militia” meaning that although yes we do have a right to guns those with access should only contain that right if they are organized with others. It can be further assumed that the amendment was written as a means for the American people to revolt against an unjust government and not to hurt each other, regardless of self-defense. To those openly opposed to gun control because of the sense of safety they feel, consider this an open question: How many more innocent people have to die before we make it impossible to happen again? How many families and futures have to be torn away before we put a stop to it?
The lack of harsh gun regulation has led to a disturbingly high homicide and suicide rate. From the year 1999 to 2013 there have been 174,773 homicides and 270,237 suicides. That is so much more than a number, those are people who died. These deaths were caused by gun owners or those who had easy access to guns. If we limited the accessibility to guns, it is clear fewer lives would be taken from us. At the current time, there are an estimated 300 million guns owned in the US, there are an estimated 326 million people. Such an absurdly high amount would mean that a large number of firearm crimes are committed by people who legally own guns. One may pose the question, wouldn’t violent people find other ways to murder? Let them, let them get creative because right now it’s too easy to kill innocent people.
Hopefully, with time the countrywide view will be for an America where there aren’t senseless deaths. But in the current atmosphere if we continue to allow anti-gun control parties to win then we have failed as a country. As long as there is easy access to these abominations, that can spread mass casualty, we will be a country on its knees.
