In this passage from from F. Scott Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby, Nick Carraway is describing happy yet fake looks and persona of his cousin Daisy. Through using this explanation Fitzgerald argues that people often project the opposite of their insecurities. Nick, being nonjudgmental, analyzes Daisy's “charm” with true realism, and shows to the reader the real reason behind her personality. Fitzgerald uses the oxymoron “her face was sad and lovely with bright things in it” to display the flashy and excited aura Daisy illuminates, yet at the same time describing her face as “sad” showing the real sorrow and regret she carries with her.
