Conformity can be seen everywhere in my personal life because I am a teenager which is stereotyped as the age of non-conformity, I have been in and a part of peer pressure situations and I am usually classified in the non-conformist class. As of now I definitely see more individuals trying to conform to the crowd or at least their group of friends and I believe this is because everyone wants to be a part of a group, no one gladly accepts being a loner or an outsider but these traits are given to you by the choices of others and not the actual rebels themselves. Usually large groups of boys who are next to each other any time they can all have the same clothes, personalities, haircuts and humor. I personally have never been friends with people …show more content…
Non-conformist like atheist can have a very hard time trying to find people that are okay with having an atheist friend because most of society is religious and atheist tend to have such a bad rap behind them because they are stereotyped as being non-moral and dangerous people even though they are usually no different morally from any religious person. Another example could be the goth or “emo” people who are also stereotyped and this affects them in the real world even though these stereotypes come from movies and TV they are still considered to be like this in the real world. So I would say as these generations pass there is definitely more of an acceptance towards people who are non-conformist but towards the older ages it is probably a lot harder to be accepted because they grew up in a time totally different than us and they probably did non-conformist things when they were teenagers also but they don’t realize this. Conformity is learned and is not talked about until people are teenagers which affects the emotional way of life probably very much because people don’t realize how they are going to be treated until they go to public environments and find out. Whether people are conformist or nonconformist there will always be many different kinds of people, personalities and emotions so we must find what we connect with and walk with these people like us because it is
Conformity can be very crucial, infact a lot of people eventually start hurting themselves or doing drugs just because they don't feel themselves anymore. Why can't society change? why can't that one kid that always follows everyone in the back can turn into the kid that just hangs with the people they really wanna hang with?We need to embrace ourselves so we can stop all this conformity from consuming us.Tupac was a nonconformist, he always did what made him happy and always told the truth.
Another point I agree with is that it's a lot easier to just fit in and not lead the train and being yourself. I personally know from experience. Growing up I always tried to conform just to fit in with the people that surrounded me. It's not just me that i've seen conform to fit in, i've seen many of my friends conform to fit in with the crowd. All around me, everyday people are conforming and changing to fit in with the society.
The most popular age to do so are teenagers as one can depict. If all people conformed to one another, individuality would never be heard of. An opposite way to think of this is that without conformity, the common society would not be able to work together. People tend to believe this due to the fact that without agreement, there is chaos. No one would have courage to stand up for what they believe in, what they like, and most importantly, who they are. One will usually believe that after conforming to fit others for a while, one may begin to lose themselves. All in all, conforming may seem to be the only option to people in order not drag attention to themselves in certain situations. In these situation types, you must find courage within yourself to have the ability to not overlook what you believe
Conformity means a change in one’s behavior due to the real or imagined influence of other people. As a teenager, the pressure to conform to the societal “norm” plays a major role in shaping one’s character. Whether this means doing what social groups want or expect you to do or changing who you are to fit in. During class, we watched films such as Mean Girls, Ferris Bueller’s Day Off, and The Breakfast Club which demonstrate how the pressure to conform into society can change who you are. In the movies we have seen, conformity was most common during high school.
It is very common to see conformity among young people, especially when large groups of young people are constantly around each other. School is one example where conformity is rampant. For some reason people tend to gravitate towards what others are doing. In Kazuo Ishiguro’s novel, Never Let Me Go, the characters are no different from any other young person in that they tend to conform. Ishiguro shows this conformity to prove that conformity stems from the want to fit in and pure ignorance. At Hailsham, the students conform just to fit in with the rest of the students, but they also conform because they do not know any better.
I have also seen conformity and rebellion. When I was in middle school, the environment was not like BCA where everyone enjoyed learning and strived to be better. Being surrounded with kids that cared more about their looks than their education was not encouraging. This may have just been a disguise. Although many students were very smart and aspire to be better students, they are afraid to show it since they are afraid that they would be made fun of.
Do you think strict conformity can also be a form of deviance? Why or why not? In certain circumstances or situations strict conformity can be a form of deviance, but it can also not be. So, it can go both ways. Deviance is a violation of a rule understood by the majority of the group(pg. 5). An example of strict conformity not being a form of deviance, in the military when the soldiers are marching, they are going the same speed and there are all in sync with each other. They are all in compliance because they have one common goal, therefore no one is deviating. Strict conformity can lead others to deviant behavior if your actions influences or effects them in any negative way. In the video, the drivers probably felt trapped and felt they had lost their sense of control.
“Social conformity has been practiced in societies around the world since ancient times,” and the reason it is so effective is that humans have an inherent need to be accepted as part of a group (Sadat). Furthermore, Hossna Sadat reports that:
Conformity can often seem like the best path to take in a situation. Going along with everyone else will cause less conflict for the group as a whole. Unfortunately conforming simply to protect other people's feelings can lead to powerful internal conflicts if a person does not fully agree with the situation. Ruth from A Raisin in the Sun, Langston from "Salvation," and Mama from "Everyday Use," all felt internal conflicts resulting from conformity.
Conformity can be useful when in unfamiliar surroundings or activities. Several examples make their appearance everyday like dancing. Dancing is a fun activity, but when it’s unclear what kind of dancing to do. What happens then? It’s in everyone’s best interest to mimic the people who know what they’re doing to avoid embarrassment. In some way or another, everyone has done it throughout their life but it is really handy in the right
As we grow up we are told to be individuals, but once we grow up we obey authority figures and change our beliefs to fit in with others. No matter what age we are we will always comply to a behavior or belief to fit in with a group different than ours or to be liked. We do not like to be judged or looked at as an outsider; this will remain the same in which ever situation we find ourselves in. Whether it be in a professional setting such as work or a social setting with friends. When thinking of conformity and obedience we mostly think of cults and prisons but it is not always the case.
In the United States, a country created out of rebellion, society seemingly celebrates the idea of uniqueness, individuality, and nonconformity. However, in Brave New World and 1984 , conformity is strictly and, sometimes, brutally enforced. However, in reality, is nonconformity really respected or are there more structures in place than we are willing to acknowledge to encourage conformity, even in the United States of 2017? While we seemingly celebrate individuality, in reality, we do many things to discourage nonconformity.
Non-conformity and conformity are two very different things.Nonconformity is the people who want to be different than everyone else. Conformity is the people that want to fit in but some of those people have so nonconformity in them also. Although many people can't notice if themselves are non-conformist or conformist. The way to find that is by looking at yourself, yes everyone has their own different ways but conformist all similar to each other they do not want to stand out unless they look truly
Conformity is defined as behavior in accordance with socially accepted conventions or standards. This is not a good or bad thing, this just is. It exists as a compliment to earlier humans congregating into larger groups, using agriculture and domestication to create sustenance. Also, conformity is essential for life. We need people to share the same ideas, ideologies and a way of thinking in order to work efficiently and effectively. There many examples that exist like, at work or in your house and even within yourself. Sigmund Freud has explained the phenomena of group psychology in a piece titled, Group Psychology and the Analysis of the Ego. Using Freud’s theory of conformity I will explain the self, what we call “me”,and its different constituents using The Principles of Psychology by
What is deviance? What does it mean? What determines a behavior as deviant? Deviance is anything that violates a social norm. For example, when a child burps at the supper table but doesn’t excuse himself. Who we socialize and spend time with will determine what we deem as deviant behavior. There are many types of deviant behaviors, some of these behaviors may not be considered deviant to one culture but to another they are.
