Unveiling Nick's Unhealthy Obsession with Jay Gatsby in The Great Gatsby. Abstract: Nick Carraway, the narrator of The Great Gatsby, written by F. Scott Fitzgerald, develops a close relationship with self-made millionaire Jay Gatsby. While Nick is involved in a close relationship with Gatsby, it ultimately transcends into a fixation. An example of this is when at the end of chapter 9, Nick sees Tom months after the death of Gatsby, the prep scholar states, “Several months later, Nick sees Tom in Manhattan and refuses to shake hands with him” (Prep Scholar, “Best Summary and Analysis: The Great Gatsby, Chapter 9). According to prep scholars, it is evident that Nick stands up for his late friend Gatsby and refuses to shake Tom’s hand due to the fact Tom did not come to Gatsby’s funeral. This is important because throughout the novel, Nick does whatever he is asked of by Jay Gatsby. For example, when Nick is tasked with inviting Daisy over to Gatsby’s house, he is eager to accept the request despite, “this request.is coupled with an interesting detail. This shows that Nick is willing to do whatever request Gatsby asks of him, but does not reciprocate this act for a character such as Tom.
