There is a difference between right and wrong. This essay will explain moral ambiguity and the difference between right and wrong, describe how the characters from Animal Farm can be viewed as morally ambiguous, and share a personal experience where I had to choose to do the right thing. To begin, I will explain moral ambiguity and the difference between right and wrong. There are many differences between right and wrong so I will be explaining what those are. First, the definition of right is “in accordance with what is good, proper, or just.” For example, doing the right thing is like showing up to class in time instead of talking to your friends in the hall. Also, a quote about right is “The time is always right to do the right thing” from …show more content…
The three characters that I will be talking about are Boxer, Old Major, and Clover. Boxer is a very strong and indefatigable horse who always works harder than everyone else on the farm. I chose Boxer because he is a very strong horse but some of his thoughts are not very good. One thing he did right was he said: “I will always work harder.” This is a good thing because it is a quote everyone should use because everyone should work harder. But one thing he said that was not so good is “Napoleon is always right.” The reason this is not good is that Napoleon manipulates the animals so now that Boxer is saying it the other animals are emboldened to believe it too. Old Major was an old boar who spoke about an idea of the revolution and impromptu died. I chose Old Major is because in his speech he talked about some things that animals still believe posthumously of Old Major. he said some things that were wrong. Something Old major said was good is “No argument must lead you astray.” This is a good crucial thing because no argument should break a friendship. But something wrong he talked about was how everything with two legs is bad because this caused an argument later on. Then Clover is a mare who is very conciliatory and is a mother of the whole farm because she treats all the animals as her own. Next, the reason I chose Clover because she is filial to all animals. One good thing she did was when
American writer and speaker, Dorothy Allison, once said “things come apart so easily when they have been held together by lies” (Allison). One of the first lessons that kids are taught is to be honest and always tell the truth. Being honest is not always easy, but the result of lying is much worse then telling the truth. In Animal Farm, George Orwell demonstrates how lies and deceit will ruin society if everyone always believes what the leader says, people lie to themself, and if laws are changed to benefit the group in power.
Moral ambiguity is sometimes found to be undefinable. Ambiguity means uncertainty or inexactness, and for something to be ambiguous there must be more than one way to interpret it giving it an unclear definition. If ambiguity is unclear then moral ambiguity must mean unclear morals. Unclear morals is the uncertainty of an ethical decision given a certain situation, if an issue or situation has different moral capacities then it will be unclear what decision would be the moral or ethical decision given the circumstance. An example of moral ambiguity in modern literature can be found in J.K Rowling’s Harry Potter with the character Severus Snape. Severus Snape is one of Harry’s teachers throughout the years who illustrates both goodness and evilness, and this is what readers love about him. Snape struggles between his love for Harry’s mother Lily and his hate for his father James, throughout the series Snape often sees James in Harry and as a result of his past hatred for Harry’s father he is hard on Harry and continues to give him detention and generally treat him unfairly as a student, but on the other hand he protects Harry’s life for the sake of Lily. Some would say Snape being hard on Harry helped him in the long run which asks the question of Moral ambiguity. Professor Snape is a morally ambiguous character much like the authority in Catch-22 while
13) Is it morally wrong to be someone like Benjamin who recognizes what is happening but does not care enough to speak up, even if others will be hurt?
Logical fallacies are found in everyone’s day to day life. We see them in advertisements, books, television commercials and even throughout conversations with others. In the novel, Animal Farm, by George Orwell, logical fallacies are used as a further insight into the story. Through the duration of the story, we see one of the main characters, Napoleon, obtain power and trust from most of the animals on the farm. Towards the end of the novel, his power and pride corrupt his reputation and relationships with those around him. The moral of the story is that an abundance of power can lead to selfish decision making and leave one with an unsatisfying feeling of hubris. The logical fallacies found in the novel help to expose the moral of the story.
At the beginning of the story, the Old Major calls a meeting in the barn and speaks about Rebellion and Animalism. Shortly after that the Old Major died’s and then the rebellion starts to take place. Mr. Jones is like a bad guy to the Animals. Napoleon to is also another major villain. But after Jones is gone, all of his tools are burned, and now its time for the animals to take a look around the farmhouse. The name Manor Farm is changed to Animal Farm and the Seven Commandments are established. They then start to begin the hay harvest. During the hay harvest Boxer says, “I will work harder” as his personal motto. The harvest turned out to be a success. At this point the pigs are now beginning to abuse their power. Pretty soon the pigeons are sent to spread the word of the rebellion to other animals. And Mr. Jones tries to recapture the farm in the Battle of the Cowshed.
Old Major chose a poor time to launch a rebellion. The dogs showed little care for the outcome of their pups’ upbringing. The hens’ independence could be seen as a bad action to the taking over of the farm. If the sheep were genetically smarter the story’s course could have been changed. Boxer’s tolerance of the pigs could have been a factor leading to his death. Benjamin’s negligence could have been the downfall of the farm. Lastly the remaining pigs selfishness is a contribution leading to the worse then average life of the farm animals. All these animals were responsible for the pigs’ dictatorship.
When Major dies the animals’ end up rebelling against their human master managing to overthrow him. After the rebellion the most outspoken pig, Napoleon, manages to become the leader along with Snowball, who is the most eloquent pig. Napoleon figures out a way to get Snowball kicked out of the farm so he can be the leader himself. Napoleon is a back-stabbing traitor. He becomes just like the humans and dominates over the other animals. Napoleon breaks the laws but since he has the other animals in such a strong hold they do not seem to care. Napoleon is the evil character in this novel. He is almost like an animal version of Adolph Hitler because he is doing wrong behind everyone’s back and all the animals still love him but only because they have no idea what Napoleon is really about.
Animal Farm, A novella by George Orwell, tells the tale of the downtrodden animals of Manor Farm, who after much oppression from their master, take over the farm for themselves. In the beginning it seems like the start of a life of freedom and plenty, but ruthless and cunning elite emerges and begins to take control of the farm. The animals find themselves ensnared once again as one form of tyranny gradually replaces the other. The novella is a critique of revolutionary Russia and idealism betrayed by power and corruption. Orwell uses allegory between Animal Farm and the Soviet Union to highlight the corruption of socialist ideals in the soviet union, the power of language and propaganda, and the dangers of a naive working class.
From the death of Old Major, Snowball, Napoleon, and Squealer replaced him. At first things started off pretty well; the harvest was very good the first year and the reading and writing system had helped some, but had limited success on others. In time, the leaders of animal farm started to have mixed feelings. Snowball and Napoleon were in constant disagreement. An important meeting that was held ended with an astonishing outcome. One decision that was made was concerning the windmill project and the most important decision made was who would be the head animal. Snowball and Napoleon each gave their input on what needs to be done around the farm. “Snowball stood up and, though occasionally interrupted by bleating from the sheep, set forth his reasons for advocating the building of the windmill. Then Napoleon stood up to reply. He said ver quietly that the windmill was a nonsense and that he advised nobody to vote for it” (57).
In George Orwell’s Animal Farm, a main theme is that power corrupts those who possess it. A definition of corruption is,“dishonest or fraudulent conduct by those in power, typically involving bribery.” Orwell develops this idea through the character Napoleon in various ways. Looking back in the book, the animal’s rebellion quickly turned political and revolved around, “Leader, Comrade Napoleon (Orwell 81)”. The power Napoleon possed was executed through lies and selfishness, aided by the lack of intellectual ability in the other animals. The corruption of Napoleon’s power is displayed when he favors himself, along with the other pigs, and eventually the dogs, who all get better rations of food compared to the other animals. Another main demonstration of how power corrupts Napoleon is how he separates himself from the other animals on the farm, displaying his feelings if superiority to the other animals. A ceremonial nature develops towards Napoleon. The last way power corrupts Napoleon is how he acts recklessly; killing other animals and lying about
This task focused on ethical absolutism, which states actions, can be either right or wrong. (Seaquist, 2012) This practice is based on an objective moral code. This ethical standard is not based on the situation or perspectives in which the actions come up but goes in all areas. Ethical absolutism has its focal points in religious doctrines that distinguish right and wrong actions.
Every day we are confronted with questions of right and wrong. These questions can appear to be very simple (Is it always wrong to lie?), as well as very complicated (Is it ever right to go to war?). Ethics is the study of those questions and suggests various ways we might solve them. Here we will look at three traditional theories that have a long history and that provide a great deal of guidance in struggling with moral problems; we will also see that each theory has its own difficulties. Ethics can offer a great deal of insight into the issues of right and wrong; however, we will also discover that ethics generally won’t provide a simple solution on which everyone can agree (Mosser, 2013).
These scenes of terror and slaughter were not what they had looked forward to on that night when Old Major first stirred them into rebellion. If she herself had had any picture of the future, it had been of a society of animals set free from the hunger... and when you had to watch your comrades torn to pieces after confessing shocking crimes”(62). Based on this passage the audience can distinguish how Clover can both see and understand matters that arise on the farm far better than most. She, unlike the others, remembers how everything was when the rebellion still did not occur. This gives Clover clues to how things have changed since Jones was in charge, to how Napoleon currently runs the farm. The animals planned to rebel against the human race in order to gain freedom. Instead, they are now trapped and terrified to speak their mind because they will most likely be slaughtered. All of the qualities that Clover acquires portray her to the audience as an important character who manifest the traits of acting caring, hard-working, and
George Orwell wrote a unique story in 1945 to criticize the political system of that time. He uses animal characters to tell his story. The novel effectively portrays how animals rebel human leadership with the intent to rule themselves. Some animals pursue the rebellion because they believe they are going to be free at last. However, as events turn out, they end up in more oppression by one of their kind. The animals end up in disappointment and slavery. Orwell brings out the political theme carefully. In my opinion, Orwell’s story has relevance to the political and economical system in the developing world today.
We all know there is right and wrong, and that we should focus on doing what is right. However, in many cases such as these two provided to us for this assignment, choosing good has some serious consequences. Unfortunately, life gives us difficult situations, and some cannot always avoid the negative outcomes or side effects that come with the positive action. As individuals, we should strive to avoid evil, and seek good. Although the situations had some negative consequences, in these cases, the good actions were taken according to the principle of double
