Webster’s dictionary defines love as a feeling of strong or constant affection for a person. F. Scott Fitzgerald portrays a different meaning of love in The Great Gatsby. Fitzgerald displays that love is not condemned to be felt for one person, love can be grasped for objects or even more than one person at a time. Everyone loves someone or something. Although Daisy chooses her love for money over her one true love, Jay Gatsby, she should still be allowed to find or regain that love again.
Daisy Buchanan is a greedy and beautiful young woman. Her voice was her best asset. “It was the kind of voice that the ear follows up and down, as if each speech is an arrangement of notes that will never be played again” (Fitzgerald
9). Daisy and Gatsby were in love for a while back when they were younger and naive, but then the war happened and Gatsby had to fight, Daisy was crushed “her mother found her packing her bag one winter night to go to New York and say good-by to a soldier who was going overseas” (Fitzgerald 75) but her parents would not let her go and she never got to say goodbye to that mysterious soldier. Just about two years later she was engaged to Tom Buchanan, a man of old money. The day before Daisy and Tom’s wedding Daisy got a letter from a “mysterious” soldier, who we know is Gatsby, “She began to cry-she cried and cried.” (Fitzgerald 76). Daisy cried vigorously over losing Gatsby but it was her own fault. She chose money over love and”The next day at five o’clock she married Tom Buchanan without so much as a shiver” (Fitzgerald 76). Daisy might not have known it at the time but she was entering into a marriage that would only bring her heartbreak and despair but it would also bring her a child, whom she would love dearly. Jay Gatsby is a very mysterious and secretive person. He had a very intense smile, the kind of smile that people never forget. “He smiled understandingly-much more than understandingly. It was one of those rare smiles with a quality of eternal reassurance in it, that you may come across four or five times in life” (Fitzgerald 48). Gatsby loved the idea of love, more so than the actual act of being loved or loving someone else. Gatsby’s greatest love was Daisy and she left him for money which is Gatsby main motive for making a lot of money and becoming rich, so he could show her what she lost. Gatsby has been keeping track of how long it has been since they have seen each other face-to-face,“Five years next November” (Fitzgerald 87). Gatsby knows how much money means to Daisy, and when he asks Nick to invite Daisy over to his house for tea and offers to show Daisy his house and, of course, she loves it. “‘Do you like it?’ ‘I love it’” (Fitzgerald 90). Gatsby accepts DAisy and her materialistic ways because he loves her and that is what true love is, accepting people's flaws and loving even the bad parts of someone. Love can not always be explained, love does not always happen at the right time or with the right person but when it does happen it is one of the greatest experiences that life can offer. Those of us who are lucky enough to experience love know that is true. Daisy and Gatsby have a tragic love story and it was never going to work out in the end for them. Maybe if Daisy had not chose money over love or if Gatsby had not gone to war things might have been different for them, but that would not have made such a wonderful story, now would it?
