Romeo and Juliet is the tragic love story of two star-crossed lovers. Shakespeare used light and dark imagery throughout the play to make this story more dramatic and to show how their love is the light in the dark abyss of their families feud. Shakespeare uses light and dark symbolism in the book, as well, to display the characters intentions, if the character was against or in favor of the antagonist.
To begin with at the very start of the book, Benvolio and Montague are having a conversation about Romeo, they say that Romeo is in the woods before dawn to be in the dark and cry, and when the sun would come up he would go in his room and makes an artificial night. “says Romeo has gotten in the habit of avoiding the light”(Shakespeare Navigators). Romeo's attitude and humor are a sign of his despair. “Black and portentous must this humor prove, Unless good counsel may the cause remove”(Shakespear 19) Romeo was in a dark place all day to represent that he was sad and lonely, and desperate for love. It seems she hangs upon the cheek of night As a rich jewel in an Ethiop’s ear”(Shakespear 60). This shows immediately from the very beginning of the book Shakespeare was showing a symbol of light and dark Romeo and Juliet, she is the light and he is the dark. The Balcony scene, act 2 scene 2 has many examples of the light and dark shown throughout the book.
In this scene, Juliet is on the balcony of her room, and Romeo is down in the Capulet garden. Romeo and Juliet express their love for each other and how they want to get married. “Romeo’s speech is an ecstatic ression of Juliet's shining beauty, and of the longing it arouses in him”(Shakespeare Navigators). Romeo sees Juliet as lighting up his way, “It is the East and Juliet is the sun. Arise fair sun and kill the envious moon”(Shakespeare 69). Romeo exclaims that Juliet is the sun and she should kill the envious moon displaying that Romeo sees Juliet as the light of his heart that is in the dark about the feeling of love. “The brightness of her cheek would shame those starts As daylight doth a lamp; her eye in heaven”(Shakespeare 71). A symbol of what Romeo is describing that Juliet is the light is how she's on a lighten up balcony and he is in a dark
orchard. The last scene in the play is act 5 scene 3. Romeo goes to the Capulet tomb, finds Juliet sleeping, and thinks that she is dead. Romeo then lays County Parise's body in the tomb with Juliet. Romeo describes the room not as dark but as light, Romeo describes the room as light because he says that the light is radiating off of Juliet and her beauty. “A lantern slaughtered youth, for here lies Juliet, and her beauty makes this vault a feasting presence full of light”(Shakespear 225). The light and dark aspects of this scene are that Juliet drinks the potion to be with Romeo. When all turned sideways Romeo chose above all Juliet and killed himself. “As well as being a metaphor for death, night also distinguishes the private, personal world of the lovers”(Shakespeare’s Tragedies). This scene is somewhat ironic because Juliet chose to be with Romeo and faked her death, and Romeo chose to be with Juliet and killed himself for her, and Juliet takes her life in Romeo's name when she finds him dead near her death bed. “Have they been merry, which their keepers call a light’ning before death! O, how may I call this a light’ning? O my love, my wife, Death”(Shakespeare 227). Shakespeare wrote Romeo and Juliet on the idea of light and dark. Even though there is one big picture of light and dark , there are many little scenarios, and symbols shown in all of the acts. The light and dark theme adds emotion to the play that the audience/ readers can relate to. The love at first sight scene, the balcony scene, and the suicide scene, are 3 of the major light and dark examples in the play.

On first seeing Juliet, Romeo exclaims, "O, she doth teach the torches to burn bright! / It seems she hangs upon the cheek of night / Like a rich jewel in an Ethiope's ear; … So shows a snowy dove trooping with crows" (Act 1 Scene 5 Lines 44-48) Romeo describes Juliet's beauty in terms of light and dark. "She doth teach the torches to burn bright" means both that her beauty is brighter than the light of any torch and that she makes the whole room light up. The brightness of Juliet's beauty is made even brighter by the contrasts with the blackness of the "Ethiope" and the blackness of crows. The use of antithesis with the "snowy doves" and the "crows" creates a powerful opposing force showing how she stands out from the others. Another interpretation of the dove is that it is a symbol of peace and sets in place an image of Romeo and Juliet's love creating peace between the two rival families. Another moment is when Juliet is waiting for Romeo to come to her bed. In her imagination, the night will bring her love. She goes on to say, "Spread thy close curtain, love-performing night, / That runaways' eyes may wink and Romeo" (Act 3 Scene 2 Lines 5-6). Juliet is seeing things as though she is in bed, the curtains are closed, creating a dark atmosphere where they act their love. In the dark, the pair will create their own light, because "Lovers can see to do their amorous rites / By their own beauties" The use of courtly love is very common in theatres at the time of Romeo and Juliet because in those days people would dream and fantasize about courtly love and was an entertaining
An example of this is “Spread thy close curtain, love-performing night, That runaways’ eyes may wink and Romeo leap to these arms, untalk’d of an unseen”. Juliet is longing for Romeo to come and consummate their marriage at night, which is when they can be together, as their relationship is too unnatural for them to meet at day, due to the hatred of their families. It is further proven that the dark imagery represents passion. Juliet is passionate about Romeo, as she has made up her mind to give her maidenhood to him, which is something she can never undo. An additional quote is “Night's candles are burnt out, and jocund day stands tiptoe on the misty mountain tops. I must be gone and live, or stay and die… Let me be ta’en, let me be put to death; I am content, so thou wilt have it so“. Romeo has just consummated his marriage with Juliet. He says that the stars are gone, and that daylight is coming. Romeo must leave, as Verona is waking up, and he will be killed if he is seen with Juliet. Even with this risk, he considers staying with Juliet, as he enjoys being with her. Dark imagery is used to show how passionate Romeo is about Juliet. He made their marriage legal, and is even considering risking death to stay with her longer. He has permanently committed to her, and cannot go back. As the evidence presented shows, the dark imagery in Romeo and Juliet reflects the theme of passion.
The play Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare is about a forbidden love between two hateful households which tragically ends in death. It begins with Romeo’s broken heart from a dainty lady and a lively masquerade where two lone souls come together. However, their love for one another was doomed at birth for both households had a constant hatred for one another. Infatuation, rage, and sadness contribute to an unhealthy relationship between Romeo and Juliet.
When we look at the text closely Juliet uses the word black a lot, with thy black mantel and black-brown night. When the word black is used when we think of death, which evidently occurs a few times in the play. Juliet also uses words like 'hooded' which again. makes us think of death. In her speech she uses pathetic fallacy when she says 'cloudy night', which also suggests negative feelings.
Shakespeare emphasizes the optimism of the scene by using language that creates positive connotations of the dark - to contrast the depressive connotations of act one, scene two. Romeo is grateful for 'night's cloak' which allows him to visit Juliet in secret without being captured and killed by the guards. This notion is developed later in the play - Romeo and Juliet meet primarily in the night-time whilst the main acts of violence occur during the day. this manipulation of stereotypical imagery, combined with the sense of contrasting and conflicting emotions.
He does not think he will ever be happy again, he doesn’t want to be out during the day and creates an artificial night, but this changes the moment he sees Juliet. Juliet, instantly becomes the new love of Romeo, bringing him out of the darkness and becoming the light to Romeo’s darkness. Montague, concerned about his son’s behavior says, “But all so soon as the all-cheering sun should in the farthest East being to draw the shady curtains from Aurora’s bed, away from light steals home my heavy son and private in his chamber pens himself, shuts up his windows, locks fair daylight out, and makes himself an artificial night.” (I.i. 142-148) Montague saying this explains how Romeo has been acting extremely upset and depressed, shutting out all light and enveloping himself in darkness. However, when he meets Juliet, everything changes and he begins to embrace the light. Romeo muses, “But soft! What light through yonder window breaks? It is East, and Juliet is the sun!”(II.ii. 2-3) Here, Romeo refers to Juliet as the sun, for she has brought light into his life, bringing him out of the darkness. In the beginning of the story, we find out that Romeo is very depressed, but towards the end, he starts changing to be romantic. In the beginning of the story, the Montagues ask Benvolio of Romeo’s whereabouts. Benvolio answers that Romeo has seemed troubled about something since the morning. Montague quotes, “Away from light steals home my heavy son and private in his chamber pens himself, shuts up his windows, locks fair daylight out, and makes himself an artificial night”(I, i, 138-141). He’s talking about how Romeo looks so sad that it seems as if he doesn’t want to come home and he rather be locked up in a room with shut windows blocking daylight in or out. This makes Montague think that it sounds like Romeo is making himself live in an imaginary, not existing, fake world all by his lonesome self. When Benvolio and Romeo meet, they talk about what is bothering Romeo. This is when we learn that Romeo is depressed by the rejection of his love, Rosaline, who believes in chastity. Also, Rosaline won’t return the love that Romeo is waiting impatiently for. So this is why Romeo is heart-broken. But later, Romeo relieves his depressed feelings and he soon becomes romantic when he meets his new love, Juliet. When Romeo first sees Juliet at the Capulet ball, he completely forgets about Rosaline and falls in love with Juliet at first sight.
Romeo and Juliet is a play about two young lovers, whose love was destined for destruction from the beginning because of the hatred between the two families, Montagues and Capulets. He continuously puts them side by side, and even though they are opposites, when seen together you realise that they are driven from the same thing; passion. Spread thy close curtain, love performing night' Not only does this quote indicate to us that Juliet wishes for the night to come however, it tells us that she wishes to make love to Romeo: 'So tedious is this day' Also this quote tells us that she cannot wait for the day to be over.
