An epic hero is character who is brave and noble, and that person is someone who carries good leadership traits and goes through an epic journey. Usually an epic hero is from an epic, and an example is Odysseus. Odysseus goes through a journey to return back to Ithaca, his homeland. In the modern era, there are epic heroes all around us. They can be in books, movies, or plays. One great example of a modern epic hero is Woody from Toy Story 3. He is confident, courageous, selfless, and humane. Now, we both know that there is a little more to an epic than that, like the many elements that make an ordinary story an epic. These elements are portrayed in various forms in both Star Wars and The Odyssey. However, some are not so obvious or easily detected. This can help us decide which is a better example and which is a better choice to teach to students. Read on
According to the Merriam-Webster Dictionary, an epic is ‘a long poem that tells the story of a hero's adventures’ or ‘a long book, movie, etc., that usually tells a story about exciting events or adventures’.
Beowulf is an epic hero being the central character presenting himself as larger than life, showing high skills, courage, and virtue. Skill, courage, and virtue are shown as values by the Anglo-Saxons. An epic hero is the central character of an epic, a long narrative poem that recounts the adventures of a legendary hero in pursuit of a goal of national importance. All epics consist of an epic hero, a quest, valorous deeds, divine intervention, and great events. An epic hero is larger than life, typically born noble or semi-divine, and presents courage, skill and virtue against opposing, often evil, forces. In the case of Beowulf, he presents courage through his three main fights, he presents skill through how he fights, and he presents virtue through loyalty, generosity, and heroism. Beowulf was also
First and foremost, an epic is a story with a main character who is a hero that goes on a long journey. He or she has factors that are with or against them like mentors, allies, sidekicks, enemies. All epics are similar yet different in many ways. Also all journeys in epics should satisfy the elements of a monomyth. “How do the two epics The Odyssey and Star Wars satisfy the the elements of a monomyth you ask?” I will compare and contrast the hero Odysseus’s journey and the hero Luke Skywalker to build a point that the two epics satisfy the elements of a monomyth. The two epics have the same composition but the details of the two provide variation in the hero's journey.
The Beowulf poem uses literary devices and descriptive language that give the audience a progressive form of literature. Kennings are used throughout the story of Beowulf when describing characters or settings. They describe persons/objects in a highly figurative way instead of its common name; for example, the author
Everyone has issues, issues equal flaws, people like parents, politicians, kids, and even the president cough, cough major flaws. If all people are flawed, and heroes are people, then heroes are flawed too. Just because you have a flaw doesn’t mean you aren’t you; same goes for heroes, heroes are heroes even with flaws.

Celestial transitions are common, as well as long and elaborate speeches by the characters. The hero in an epic undergoes a battle, after intricate descriptions of their preparations, and the result is a clear outcome. Masculinity is evident in epic poems taking on themes of grant events, elevated situations, courage, importance, and strength; but the same cannot be said for a mock-epic.
An epic is an extended narrative poem in elevated or dignified language, celebrating the feats of a legendary or traditional hero. The main characteristics of an epic as a literary genre is that it is a long poem that tells a story, it contains an epic hero, its hero searches for immortality (but doesn't find it physically, only through fame), gods or other supernatural beings are interested and involved, and it delivers an historical message. The Epic of Gilgamesh is classified as an epic because it fits all the characteristics of an epic as a literary genre.
The poem is known for its usage of kennings (compound words), throughout the stanzas the kennings are being used metaphorically to imply things or characters in an unnoticeable way. According to most dictionaries, an epic is an extended narrative poem in elevated or dignified language, celebrating the feats of a legendary or traditional hero. While this is true, the epic Beowulf contains more than those two requirements. This story contains five elements which make it an epic.
