Isolation or Death How do isolation and death connect? Well according to the Webster Dictionary isolation is “the state of being alone or kept apart from others.” Also from the Webster Dictionary is the definition of death which is “the permanent stopping of all the vital bodily activities.” These two words are synonyms because both are taking you away from normal life or life in general. An example is “The Book Thief” by Markus Zusak, “The Diary of a Girl: The Definitive Edition” by Anne Frank, and “Kidnapped at 11, Women Emerges After 18 Years.” by Jesse Mckinley and Carol Pogash. The people in these books are being sucked out of their everyday life and being “killed off” or separated off from the world. Because Max is a Jew he is having to hide, Anne Frank is a real person and she is experiencing the same things as Max (a fictional character), and Jaycee Dugard a little girl kidnapped at age 11. In “The Book Thief” Max has to be in a basement to hide from the Germans that could hurt him. In the basement he is being isolated or the state of being separated from everyone and everything. He sadly is locked away from the real world and is missing …show more content…

Isolation is similar to a puddle of water – it is seemingly dull and colorless, but all it takes is for one drop of paint to change the entire picture. The novel cc is about a ailing Chinese boy named Stephen who goes through the same cycle. Stephen moves to a Japanese village during a time of war between Japan and China to recover from his disease. By forming bonds with several locales and listening to their stories, he quickly matures into a young adult. Throughout the novel, Gail Tsukiyama shows how disease forces Stephen into isolation; however, his relationship with Sachi and his time spent in Matsu’s garden lead him out of solitude.
Each novel in itself is a representation of its author’s life experiences, and how they learned to cope with their isolation. Conrad portrays his own intense encounters in Africa through Kurtz and his inability to cope in that environment; Bronte literally writes herself into her novel and actualizes a fictional character who represents her solitary life; Gardner creates a monster who is an outcast from society, like he was at the time for not accepting or emphasizing existentialist theory. Each author portrays solitude a little differently from the other, and yet there are unifying factors such as the idea of being driven mad by, or one’s fight or flight response to, separation from others, from society. One of the most difficult things, when creating art of any kind, is accurately transcribing what you have seen or thought, into something that can be understood by readers. Yet, because of what they have all known in their lives, Conrad, Bronte and Gardner are able to what they do

Tolstoy uses Ivan Ilyich to show varying degrees of Isolation. In the world today, there are many reasons why people isolate themselves from situations.
Franz Kafka, in his novella “The Metamorphosis”, and Harry Mulisch, in his novel The Assault, uses dark, lonely diction and imagery to create the isolation within the protagonists. The setting symbolizes how the protagonist’s isolation continues to enlarge throughout the book. At the beginning of both the novels, the setting is more open and light, which is compared to the characters’ isolation that is less bordered and complex. As the settings grow smaller and the characters become lonelier, Anton and Gregor’s isolation become more pronounced. Gregor is gradually becoming isolated by his family causing his transformation to progress rapidly, while Anton’s family is growing, but his isolation is conflicted upon himself, causing the setting to continue to encase them, emphasizing the effects that their isolation takes on them.
The theme of isolation occurs often in film. Although it is usually used in horror movies or suspenseful movies, it is also used often in drama or comedy genres. In horror films, isolation can be used to drive a man insane or it can come into play when a helpless victim is trying to escape a killer but no one is around to aid them. In drama, a character may lose a loved one and the
Isolation, by definition, is the act (condition? ) of being separated from the mainstream society. In William Shakespeare’s Othello, the protagonist, Othello is isolated from the rest of Venetian society because of racism. Racism is a common factor throughout the dialogue of the play, as almost all characters have directed racial slurs towards Othello. Iago, the antagonist, is able to take advantage of Othello’s insecurities and vulnerabilities about his race and convince him of Desdemona’s infidelity. Other’s verbal comments on Othello and his own sense of reputation speed up (deepen) ( Othello’s insecurity regarding his race. His insecurity about his race eventually turns into the tragic flaw that causes his downfall,
In Miss Peregrine's, the dilapidated house is described as he says, "the steps groaned as if woken from a long sleep" (Riggs 85). This figuratively states that no one has been in the house for a very long time, supporting the theme of isolation in the book. It is effective because in personifying the house, Riggs shows the reader another example of isolation through Jacob’s prolonged aloneness. In Edgar Allen Poe’s “The Mask of The Red Death”, the quote, “But in the western or black chamber the effect of the fire-light ...was ghastly in the extreme, and produced so wild a look upon the countenances of those who entered, that there were few of the company bold enough to set foot within its precincts at all” is used to display isolation. This is because the description of the fire light is discussed in a way to represent fear. In turn, this fear represents isolation because the premise of the story revolves around the isolation of the elite townspeople in closed quarters - separating them from the rest of the world both emotionally and

The unique features of a local environment always give special characteristics to its inhabitants. The living environment has a large influence on people. For example, customs, traditions and cultural changes in their environment due to the psychological and ideological. With the development of society, people are not limited to living in their own home, for various reasons, will go a different place to live or work. However, strange and adapt to a new environment for the first time will become more evident, and even feel alienated and existential crisis. Heart of Darkness by Joseph Conrad, Season of Migration to the North by Tayeb Salih and As I Lay Dying by William Faulkner are three novels, which deal in one way or another with the experience of alienation and existential crisis. The main character Kurtz in Heart of Darkness representing the mystery of the Congo insolubility of magic, he thought he had achieved the ideal in place and has conquered the wilderness, but the fact is that his mind was occupied by the wilderness. In Season of Migration to the North, Mustafa is a highly intelligent and solipsistic worldview person, but because of his learning experience, making him died in the cracks of different cultures, and ultimately committed suicide because he cannot find a way to exist. Addie was influenced by her father in childhood, aspires a sense of existence and feel alone, finally die with hopelessness from the bottom of her heart. All these three characters experience alienation and existential crisis, but the way they handle it is different.
In the words of Jeanne Marie Laskas “Isolation is aloneness that feels forced upon you, like a punishment.” Nobody enjoys being completely shut off from everything but just how bad is it? It turns out that it is worse than we would think. Isolation can have many awful effects on the human body and mind, ranging from an increase in suicidal thoughts and actions, problems of patterns of sleep and attention, to an increase in aging effects. Today I will go over a few sources that show that isolation can hurt anyone.
Isolation is basically being alone, cut off and not given much attention. Isolated in communication is lacking contacts and information, including not being able to read. Isolated by a lack of social services and by a lack of social or economic supports.
Isolation mean is being lonely or being left out of something when everyone else altogether.
