Cast away is a movie about a man who gets stranded on an island and how he fights to survive by himself. It’s directed and produced by Robert Zemeckis. Chuck Noland is a FedEx employee. He lives on a tight schedule with no time to even spare for his loved ones. He even ends up working on Christmas when he gets a call to solve problems in London. His plane crashes over the Pacific Ocean and he is the only survivor left to fend for himself on an island. This movie depicts various forms of interpersonal communication. For example in a scene after cutting his hand Chuck throws a ball in frustration. He later on sees that his bloody hand has left an impression on the ball. He then draws a pair of eyes, nose and mouth on the ball and names it Wilson.
We can see his need for companionship. As stated by Emma Seppala, Timothy Rossomando, and James R. Doty, “social connection—that is, the development of positive relationships with others in the social world—is primary psychological need and motivator essential for human development and survival”. Communication is also linked to our psychological and physical health benefits. Without social contact chuck even attempted suicide but after he brought Wilson into his life he felt a sense of companionship. Despite the fact that “Wilson” is a ball and not a human, chuck develops an interpersonal relationship with it. Chuck and Wilson share a complementary relationship. According to chuck in his mind Wilson performs the receiver function in a conversation and then comprehends them and even responds .chuck creates a transactional relationship by anticipating dialogues that he would receive from Wilson if it was a fully functioning human being. Wilson satisfied chuck’s many interpersonal necessities. “Interpersonal communication is dynamic. When you interact with others, your communication and all that influences it—perceptions, thoughts, feelings, and emotions—are constantly in flux”. it’s difficult for a human to exist without communication.
Fly Away Peter is unique in its presentation of universal and prominent themes. The significance of the individual, as opposed to the meaning of life, man’s ability to transcend the immediate, the continuity of life and predetermined fate are all examined in a sensitive and perceptive manner. Malouf crafts his three main characters to portray and develop the essence of his main themes. The most prominent of these themes is summarised by Malouf when he said: "We can and must transcend the conditions we find ourselves in, however terrible they may be."
In Speak by Laurie Halse Anderson, the main character Melinda refers to most of her teachers by nicknames only. From the start of the novel, she points out her teachers by nickname. First is her English teacher, who is nicknamed hair woman. Melinda says, “My English teacher has no face….I call her hairwoman.” (Anderson 6). Her social studies teacher is Mr. Neck. The Art teacher is Mr. Freeman. Out of all the teachers in this book Melinda only says one of their real names. Every other teacher has a nickname except Mr. Freeman. Nicknames that are given to teachers in the novel reveal the lack of connection Melinda has with them in order to show that they do not see that she is dealing with a hardship.
It is important to voice one’s opinion, because hiding things can only lead to negative consequences. In Everything I Never Told You, Celeste Ng tells us a story about a girl, Lydia, who tried to carry out her parent’s unfulfilled desires. She deceived her parents into thinking that she was the perfect child that they always wanted her to be, popular and into medicine and science, but in reality it was quite the opposite. Her innate ability to hide her actual life from her parents ultimately led her family to breakup. Communication is extremely important amongst family members, because through thick and thin, they will always be there for you, no matter
The movie Crash examines the interpersonal communications that exists between different groups’ of people. In this film, characters are highlighted by the contact that occurs when disparate people are thrown together in large urban settings. Crash displays extreme instances of racism and shows how the thought, feeling, and behavior of individuals are influenced by actual, imagined, or implied presence of other human beings. My analysis will focus on Social Cognition and how people process, and apply information about other people and social situations.

The movie Bridesmaids has been my favorite movie since the first time I viewed it, with just the perfect amount of humor and real-life difficulties to satisfy. After I started learning about interpersonal communication I realized how many of my personal relationships use the concepts we have discussed as well as how I have used the concepts while becoming who I am now.
In the introduction of Deborah Tannen’s “Conversation Style: Talking on the Job”, she compares and contrasts the ways men and women communicate. This reminds me of what I tell people that are struggling in their relationships. Women and men express themselves differently. Women think, but men act. If you can’t wrap your head around this, being in a relationship with anyone is going to be hard. Yet, this is such a basic way of looking at this issue. Not only are the genders vastly different, but each person relates to the world around them in a certain way. He or she also needs to be related to in a specific way. Looking at personalities and personal histories can give a better look at the way we communicate with each other. Tannen examines
Mitch spends every Tuesday with Morrie not knowing when it might be his dear sociology professor’s last. One line of Morrie’s: “People walk around with a meaningless life…This is because they are doing things wrong” (53) pretty much encapsulates the life lessons from Morrie, Mitch describes in his novel, Tuesdays With Morrie. Morrie Schwartz, a beloved sociology professor at Brandeis University, was diagnosed with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), which most people would take as a death sentence. Morrie viewed it differently; he saw it more as an opportunity. This is because he does not follow the so-called “rules” of society. These rules come from the sociological concept of symbolic interaction, the theory that states that an individual’s
The movie “Breaking Away” presents the story of a young man from working class origins who seeks to better himself by creating a persona through which he almost, but not quite, wins the girl. The rivalry between the townies and the college students sets the scene for the story of four friends who learn to accept themselves as they "break away" from childhood and from their underdog self-images.
Speak, is a novel written by Laurie Halse Anderson, about a girl entering high school, for the first time, with a heavy secret weighting on her. Melinda Sordino begins freshman year at Merryweather High School, being a complete different person. Over the summer, Melinda and her friends went to a senior party, where Melinda ended calling the police. This caused her friends and the people at the party to socially reject her, even though they didn’t knew that before the phone call, Andy Evans raped her. Due to the phone call, Melinda enters high school without friends and having to see Andy Evans everyday. Her only “safe” place in the entire school is art class, where Mr. Freeman is the teacher. Mr. Freeman is the only teacher Melinda doesn’t dislike or avoids, because he listens and understands her, but also shows her the value of honesty.
Interpersonal communication is everywhere in society, both the past, present, and the future. “Marty,” a love story, and a movie made in the fifties, shows many examples of interpersonal communication. In this movie, the main character, Marty, who is a decent, socially awkward man who is pressured by his peers and family to find love and get married. He then gets fed up and goes to a club in town and meets a woman named Claire, who is in similar circumstances to him. Marty and Claire then interact and spend time together and Marty experiences companionship for the first time. As time goes on, Marty’s bachelor friends and his mother are expressing their disapproval of Claire. Marty then gets angry with everyone, and tells them all I like here and I have a good thing going and he does not want it to be messed up. Although the movie ends on a cliffhanger note, the assumption is that Marty and Claire will keep courting and they will hopefully get married.
Is it possible for someone surrounded by people to be lonely? In the novel Speak, Laurie Halse Anderson depicts Melinda Sordino as a young teen who is depressed due to something that occurred at a party. As a result Melinda has no friends and her grades are suffering. While Melinda is working on a project in art class, she receives comments from a classmate and her teacher, Mr. Freeman. Her classmate, Ivy says “It’s scary” “In a weird way”. Melinda thinks that the reaction is not what she wanted to hear. Melinda notices that Mr. Freeman is acting serious and examining her project and says he makes her nervous. Mr. Freeman says “This has meaning. Pain”. The bell rings and Melinda reacts by leaving before he can say more. It is possible that
Human's are not perfect, but in Jonas's community you can say that they are because nothing goes wrong, you can even say it's a normal community even though normal isn't very descriptive. Jonas has changed through The Giver by Lois Lowery in multiple ways, but now he has a better understanding of them and why things are the way they are. He knows that his community isn't like the past because he was chosen to be the receiver which he had no idea what he would have to do, but over time the Giver gets him through everything. He gets memories about the past and he isn't allowed to tell anyone about them because the community doesn't want the people knowing about what the past was like. Jonas will be getting memories that will include pain, which
There is an abundance of examples where In the Next Room pulled these emotions out of me. One major example of this is on page 103, after Dr. Givings has witnessed Catherine putting her hand to Leo’s cheek, he says “My darling, I don’t mind.” She then gets extremely angry with her husband for not feeling jealousy towards Leo and storms off saying: “Don’t talk to me tonight! Don’t talk to me tomorrow! I will take my breakfast in my own room!” My initial thoughts are: how ridiculous and humorous that she is dealing with this issue so immaturely in her marriage—acting as if she is a sixteen-year-old girl hungry for her boyfriend’s attention.
I thought that the film Castaway was a good representation of the hardships of life and what it truly takes to survive in difficult circumstances. A good thing in the movie that represented hardship was basically his entire situation being stuck on the island. I thought the way that the movie present his obstacles and him trying to figure out how to solve them was good. The ending was also was one of my favorite parts of the movie. I think the way the movie showed his victory in returning home didn’t mean everything would go back to normal was fantastic. For example, on the island the main character kept holding onto hope that he’d see his wife again, and once he finally did he felt like he lost her all over again. One bad thing about the
