Treatment in a prison differs from prison to prison and how the inmates act towards the officers in charge of them. The treatment of the prisoners depend on how they act towards officers, this usually includes following the rules, not fighting, doing what they're told, not trying to escape, etc. If a prisoner or prisoner's acts out of place they are usually met with a punishment,this can differ on what they did, for example if two prisoners were to fight in the comments area of the prison it could cause the rest of the prisoners in the room to get in a fight. When an officer tries to break up the and the prisoners retaliate he is forced to use physical force in which he uses a baton, taser, pepper spray, etc. The humane treatment in this situation would be …show more content…

An example of this situation is seen in a real life prison system located on an island known as Rikers Island. “August 1990 at the Otis Bantum Center on Rikers Island, after inmates barricaded themselves in their dorms protesting long delays in getting meals and the fact that they were not able to receive visitors…The incident left 120 inmates in need of medical attention, 81 of them with injuries to their heads and several in need of immediate hospitalization because they were unconscious or suffering from seizures or hematomas to the brain...The guards wore riot gear and, as pointed out by the Department of Investigation's report, could not be identified by inmates.” (Prison Conditions in the United States Section 25, page 33) After the incident the inmates reported that the officers continued to beat them for no reason. Normal prisoners were often treated like this but there were certain prisoners that were treated differently, the mentally ill.
