Honor is a characteristic some people have, not everyone has it. Individuals have their own perspectives on what they find as “honorable”. Throughout several stories, honor is described in numerous ways, but at the end of them all, they share a common sense for what honor means. Multiple stories define how the authors taking in what it means to be honorable through the actions of their characters and how they act in society. Each character from the different stories demonstrates the honorable characteristic, for example, “Autumn Rose”, a short story by Kevin Kyung. Likewise, in “Rule of the Game” by Amy Tan, she demonstrates honor from a young girl and her passion for the game of chess. An additional piece called, The Great Gatsby by F. Fitzgerald, illustrates honor through the actions taken by the characters. Raisin in the Sun by Lorraine Hansberry, also explains honor through the behavior of her characters. Some people are born with honorable characteristics, while other aren’t. Walt Disney is a perfect people to demonstrate what it is like to be dishonorable. Honor is being reliable and having respect for others because being able to be dependent on an individual’s ability to treat people with kindness as well as a person who works for every relationship helps with the overall trust in society. Honor can be expressed through respecting others.
In The Great Gatsby, one of the main characters, Nick, demonstrates honor by being “...inclined to reserve all judgment...” (Fitzgerald 1) . Demonstrating honor by not judging people based off of their first impressions, they respect the time it takes to actually get to know people. When people respect others they are kind and helpful to others. In A Raisin in the Sun, the author uses Mama, the matriarch of the family, to explain how helping others demonstrates honor because, “... she can always take a few thousand and help…”(Hansberry 37). Respecting others and being kind and helpful to other people is a big characteristic of being honorable.. Respecting others and is not the only way to represent honor, people can respect hobbies they enjoy doing. When individuals honor their interests, they “... add new secrets” (Tan 5) into their understanding of that hobby. For example in the “Rules of the Game” the protagonist honors the way of chess. People value their time learning more about the topic and when people honor or respect an occupation, they tend to the time it takes to learn about that interest. By doing so, it explains how when people take they time to learn something new, they demonstrate honor. On the contrary, Walt Disney was the exact opposite of being honorable. He saw the negativity in people, and then acted upon that. Disney did not accept others for who they were, he was racist, sextist, and anti-semitic.When a person demonstrates a negative kind of personality, they can’t be
honorable. Honor can be further described as someone being reliable. Other people honor others when they find characteristic that represent being dependable and trustworthy. Fitzgerald illustrates honor through Nick because the other characters find him trustworthy, because people looked to him for assistance or for help. Therefore, the other characters want him to know the truth about them like when Gatsby said “‘I don’t want you to get the wrong idea of me from all the stories you hear’” (Fitzgerald 65). Gatsby is demonstrating trust in Nick; Gatsby honors Nick. It’s important to be respected and honored because when an individual is reliable, other people tend to enjoy being around them, and they honor that person. However, in the short story “Autumn Rose”, the protagonist, Rose, relied and trusted her boyfriend, but, “‘...[he got] with a new girl…’” (Kyung 96). Rose had honored her boyfriend, but she lost it after she heard the news about him cheating on her. People will lose honor for another if they do something that is dishonorable. Honor can be earned, however, it can also be lost. Likewise, Walt Disney was not honored by his employees. Many of them despised him. The actions Disney took towards others caused the people to dislike Disney. When people are capable of being counted on, like Nick, other people can depend and rely on those individuals. Whenever individuals are reliable and trustworthy, other people tend to honor their personalities. Honor is being reliable, respectful, and to be able to dependent on an individual’s ability to treat others with kindness helps with the trust in society. When people respect and trust, others they can depend on those people to be able to be counted on. The importance of being able to be relied on and counted on because it help the common good of the overall community. Others enjoy being around an individual if they can be counted on and if they are respectful. Through all accounts, each piece of writing interpreted honor. Overall the stories written helps to demonstrate how reliability and dependability define the word "honor", as it helps with the good of society.
Honor is a trait few possess in the modern world. Cyrano de Bergerac, a play by Edmond Rostand set in France during the sixteen hundreds, discusses honor in it’s truest form. But honor is not simply a code or a way to describe a man, there are characteristics that make a honorable individual. The main character, Cyrano, lives what many in his city would call an honorable life. Rostand uses this character to explore what characteristics make a man of honor. Some of the prominent traits the author presents as honorable are possessing controlled wit, bravery on and off the battlefield, and the ability to love unceasingly.
When one sees others with more, they feel an inner twinge of envy. Some are unhappy with their achievements because of forces that they could not control, or because they set their goal too high. Often times, people are disappointed by the result of a situation, because it did not become their expectations. It is through these events that cause one to act upon what they feel. For those feeling envy, one aims to climb higher than that other with more, to surpass them so that they do not feel this sense of dismay. At a young age, Gatsby hated the life he lived. Seeing the wealth that others held, Gatsby made sure that he would never have to continue living his modest life. For others with high expectations, when one sees an opportunity to get
When thinking about loyalty in the book, The Great Gatsby not much loyalty is shown. It’s like people come around when they need something but when you need a friend, they are nowhere to be found and you don’t exist. A lot of abandonment is shown towards the end of the story, which leads us back to loyalty and what the relationships each character had with Gatsby meant to them. Throughout the story the only loyalty shown was from Gatsby and Nick towards each other and the loyalty Gatsby showed to everyone around him.
Imagine writing a book. Now that it's finished, the only thing left to do is pick the title. Not as easy as it seems, huh? The author F. Scott Fitzgerald had trouble naming his novel, The Great Gatsby. The theme of the story was really pride, and as such, the title isn't very fitting. Rather, the title should have been called “the pride in their hearts”.
What is honor? Honor coins an individual’s nature. A principle that exists on the purpose of perception, a martyr willing to conform and accomplish. In the case of Shakespeare's play, The Tragedy of Julius Caesar, Brutus was the most honorable of men. A brother to Caesar, but a father to Rome, he persist and perish for the future of his child. The idea of ignorance, and the belief of a false faith, turns this noble man toward a vulgar grave, with virtuous notions.

The Crucible by Arthur Miller has excellent examples of how honor can manipulate people’s decisions in times of importance. John proctor holds his moral standpoint and does not falter into the temptations of selfishness, while Elizabeth would describe honor as how a person lives their lives. Some can even describe honor as what is most important in life; family. Giles believed that his life was the ultimate object he could sacrifice to maintain his family’s happiness. However honor can be defined, one thing is certain; Everyone has some degree of honor in their lives.
Selfishness is a disease of the soul that every person experiences several times throughout their life. To say that it has never been experienced would be hypocrisy. To say that it is a “good thing”, would be erroneous. Although as humans we like to lie to ourselves, it is no question that selfishness can make any person act like a fool. It consumes us and makes us into someone we are not. Whether it leads to getting people killed, falling in love, or buying alcohol, selfishness always leads to destruction.
“Being honest may not get you many friends but it’ll always get you the right ones” (John Lennon). The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald is narrated by Nick Carraway, a young man from Minnesota. After fighting in WW I he moves to New York City to learn business. While living in West Egg, a part of Long island where the “new money” lives he becomes friends with his neighbor Jay Gatsby. Nick is honest, pleasant to be around and sees people for who they really are.
William Shakespeare's play, Julius Caesar, has a heavy focus on honor. The characters in the play have a tendency to refer back to honor and the honor of Rome, but are they really as honorable as they say? Honor is a very abstract concept that is widely applicable in many situations, but what is it? To honor someone is to show them respect, and to be honorable is to act in a way that deserves respect and admiration. The characters of Julius Caesar, for the most part, are all seeking some form of honor, but do they achieve it? Three of the best examples of honor in Julius Caesar are Brutus, Cassius, and Portia. With varying levels of honor, these characters display the spectrum well.
Like God observing the world, we are the observers of The Great Gatsby. According to German philosopher Immanuel Kant’s two categorical imperatives, Daisy and Jay were unethical. Kant’s categorical imperatives state; ‘Act as if your action could be elevated into universal law’ and. Based on the principles of Kant, Daisy and Jay were unethical in several ways, according to Kant’s two categorical imperatives. Daisy used people emotionally and lacked responsibility, and Jay was manipulative towards the people around him. The Great Gatsby is a great example of a society that does not abide by Kantian principles.
Most self respecting people have ethics and morals they try to abide by. They create standards that they live life by and construct their own philosophy with. In the novel The Great Gatsby, written by F. Scott Fitzgerald, morals and ethics are a scarce practice. Jay Gatsby lives his life by the over bearing morals and values of devotion, corruption, and his will to control.
In the book The Great Gatsby there are admirable and despicable characters. For example Gatsby is admirable because everyone knows who he is and everybody looks up to him. They think he is the greatest person in the world and without even knowing who he really is they think he is perfect. Nick admires Gatsby because he is the only one who sticks around. He was the only person who cared for him and stayed by his side even when he lied. "Oh, I've been in several things," he corrected himself. "I was in the drug business and then I was in the oil business. But I'm not in either one now." said Gatsby (The Great Gatsby Ch. 5) This conversation was between Nick and Gatsby when they were talking about Gatsby’s past. Gatsby was open and told him everything even if he wasn't fully honest. In Nick's eyes it makes him more honest than the other fake people who show up to his parties.

Well, I know that I don't want to be cut off in traffic, or yelled at, or bumped into rudely at the grocery store, or left picking up garbage all over my yard from the street. So I could try not to do those things to other people. I won't cut off others in traffic, or yell, or act rude at the grocery store, or throw garbage in the street. That's just a place to start. Treat others the way you want to be treated.
