Shortly after the French Revolution, Alfred de Vigny stated that “there are no heroes and no monsters in this world”. Although this statement contains valid arguments, a greater amount of fallacies regarding the matter reveal themselves. Heroes may not express outrageous and superior characteristics as seen in Beowulf, however, individuals and groups worldwide do exist and play important roles in their efforts to make society a better place. Heroic traits displayed throughout Beowulf such as courage and sacrifice, extend to these modern-day heroes.
Nelson Mandela, a previous and significant South African president, is an example of an individual who embodies heroic traits. His efforts to fight apartheid ended an era of racism and hate. In a country where little would speak out against apartheid, courage becomes a

When Beowulf hears of Hrothgar's need of help, he expresses courage when he “ordered a boat” (198) to “search out [the] king” (200). Beowulf resembles a hero in this case because he steps up to the challenge of fighting Grendel when no one else will. Without hesitation, he travels to a land that is …show more content…
The argument often made supports the idea that although people who do good exist in the world, personal benefit and deeds with selfish motives abolish the heroic aspects. While validity could be encountered in this argument, significant literary pieces such as Beowulf go against it. Heroes during the era that Beowulf’s tales revolved around and chose to act in heroic ways in order to secure themselves a spot in the afterlife through fame and glory. When Beowulf embarks from Hrothgar's land, the Danes “furnish [him]...with twelve treasures” (1866-1867). Although treasure is awarded to Beowulf for his efforts in defending the safety of the Danes, he remains a hero. As long as one demonstrates heroic values, they qualify as a
While fighting the Dragon Beowulf shows feats of strength and courage that define him as a hero. The classical hero displays a special quality that separates him from the rest of
To be considered an ideal hero, you must be willing to risk everything to succeed. A hero is one who would give his own life to save another; one who is fearless in the face of death. In the epic poem Beowulf, our hero thrives on the opportunity to prove his worth. He is young and strong and is driven to make a name for himself. The author describes Beowulf’s exceptional ability and warrior character long before he is named in the poem: "Great among Geats, this man was more mighty than any then living" (Damrosch 913). Shortly after Beowulf arrives in Denmark, Wulfgar, one of King Hrothgar’s men, explains to the King why he must meet with the men that have come to slay the beast. ”Far-sailing Geats have come to our kingdom across the wide water. These warriors call their leader Beowulf and bid me bring their plea to our prince, if it pleases him to allow them entrance and offer them audience. I implore you t...
In the poem Beowulf, the protagonist is portrayed as a heroic figure who strives to spread his name and glory out across the land in order to be remembered. Although his acts may not entirely be for the right reasons, Beowulf does express his heroic qualities of bravery, arrogance, and brute force.
The character of Beowulf stands as a hero to the ancient Danes because of his actions. He is constantly being cited as a "war-chief" and a "gold-giver" (61). Beowulf has achieved fame through what he has done with his own hands. His identity as a leader is based upon the Danish society’s emphasis on personal action, as opposed to the delegation of responsibility through conscious thought. It is this very sense which spurs Beowulf to fight the dragon: "In my youth I engaged in many wars. Old guardian of the people, I shall still seek battle, perform a deed of fame, if the evil-doer will come to me..." (59). Beowulf derives his power from a strong link to the past. Without his history of glorious deeds, he would see himself bereft of the very power which qualifies him to be a good King. Beowulf’s bravery never comes in to question, he does meet every challenge head-on, with deadly attention. The society which labels Beowulf as a legendary hero, recognizes his actions and his bravery as a integral part of his definition as a hero. Without the society to support th...
Throughout time, society has come in contact with individuals who are praised due to their bravery, loyalty, strength and a tendency to go beyond the limit. One may call this individual a hero, and if asked to give some examples of heroism, one may pick the classical literary hero Beowulf. According to Roger B. Rolling, Beowulf is classified as a Type I hero who, “if superior in degree to other men but not to his natural environment, … is a leader. He has authority, passions, and powers of expression far greater than ours but is subject both to social criticism and to the order of nature” (434). Beowulf’s heroism is exemplified first when he kills Grendel, then when he kills Grendel’s mother, and finally when he kills the Dragon. Also, Beowulf
A hero not only needs to be physically outstanding, but he also needs to have integrity, moral values and needs to act without thinking in his own benefit. Beowulf has many characteristics of a hero but he also has some defects that make me think that he wouldn’t be considered a hero in today´s world. A hero concept evolves with a culture, Beowulf has many things that the Anglo-Saxons viewed as heroism but he misses many things that are important for a modern hero.
There are many traits that are possessed by those who seek heroism. Whether it is in real life or in fiction, every hero desires these character traits in the past, present, and future. IN my opinion, the two traits that are most prominent in the poem Beowulf are bravery and goodness.
There are many things to take into consideration when characterizing a person as a hero. Heros are typically seen as people who accomplish brave deeds and fulfill noble tasks for the greater good of things. In the epic poem Beowulf by an anonymous Anglo-Saxon poet a hero is revealed. What makes Beowulf a hero is his unbelievable strength and power. He does not get discouraged or let anything stear him away from what he feels needs to be done for the safety of others. In his battles with the monster Grendel, Grendel’s mother and the dragon Beowulf exhibits his strength and will to fight. Beowulf, is loyal to his people and his king. What I feel is the most important quality of Beowulf, though, is his willingness to risk his life for the good
Beowulf is a good example of a courageous and strong hero. He shows all of
The hero must be ready to defend himself, and his people. Mythical entities are poised to strike, and gold is to be had by anyone brave enough to fight these beasts. Treasure, feasts, and appreciation are showered onto kings and heroes by their people. In modern society, leaders work at a weekly job, are given weekly responsibilities, and are not appreciated by everyone. The values in “Beowulf’ do not apply to reality. Nothing is given to leaders out of appreciation, and there is hardly time for feasts, unlike the 10th century cultures of Scandinavia. The society of Beowulf is incompatible with the norms of modern society on a multitude of levels.
A hero is someone who is admired for their courage and bravery, as well as their noble accomplishments. They are respected by almost everyone, due to their kindness and charitable mindset, that drives them to fight for the good of others. Beowulf is the perfect representation of a hero, based on multiple characteristics that he displays throughout the novel. Along with his characteristics, Beowulf also takes on many “hero like” challenges and tasks. In the novel, Beowulf is praised and admired throughout the kingdom for his bravery, humility, and selflessness.
Beowulf feels a sense of loyalty to Hrothgar which leads Beowulf “…to sail the swan’s road and search out that king, / the famous prince who needed defenders” against the marauding monster, Grendel (200-201). Beowulf’s generosity leads him to Hrothgar’s mead-hall to save Hrothgar from the clutches of Grendel. Regardless of fate and lineage, Beowulf is driven by forces out of his control. It is true that the qualities of an Anglo-Saxon warrior drives Beowulf to become the hero he is, but his lineage and fate define his
Beowulf displayed great courage and honor throughout his journeys and battles; he was an epic hero. An epic hero is a person who is viewed as larger than life and possesses values of a certain society. From the time of Beowulf’s battle with Grendel to his brawl against the dragon, he has showed everyone what being an honorable hero looks like. His heroism is revealed through both youth as a young warrior and wisdom as a reliable king. He never backed down and didn’t give up when situations were tough. Beowulf had obligations to fulfill and went about every aspect of his life with courage and strength. He cared for his people and was willing to take on anyone that threatened them or his kingdom. He sincerely was the hero of his time.
In the era of my rule, a king was not someone who simply delivered orders to his “men” while he sat on his throne awaiting confirmation of a victory. Men admired their leader for: outstanding courage, selflessness to his tribe, personal valor, and ability to survive despite the toughest opposition. Heroism and leadership are characteristics that brought my fellow men to abide by my side despite the situation, which in response led me to become such an aspiring leader, and in the end a hero – the demonstration to attain glory through brawls. Traditions, natural laws, and religion are descriptions of my heroism and leadership.
It is an extraordinary experience learning about how a hero is a hero, what makes up a hero? What symbolizes a hero? What are the reasons for a hero to solve battles and conflicts? The answer to these questions, is using literary devices. In Beowulf not only do people talk about his bravery in battles, but also his heroic qualities. A critic states, “Beowulf is predominantly a positive role model; not only does the poem use an unequivocal phrase when describing him, but he never fails to exhibit the kinds of qualities one would want in a ruler…” (Gulley). The critic is referring to Beowulf’s heroic qualities, and how being a warrior doesn’t change his characteristic of being a positive role model.
