Can a ordinary person be a hero? What about a juvenile delinquent? In SE Hinton's The Outsiders. Many of the main greasers were heroes. The greasers are mostly friends who stick together that try to not get jumped by other gangs. Three of the main greasers who are considered juvenile delinquents are also heroes. Three main greasers that are heroes (that don't look like it on the outside) are Johnny, Darry, and Dally. Johnny was one of the main greasers who was a hero. One of the reasons Johnny was a hero is because he helped Ponyboy, the main character, to save the kids in a burning church. He went in first even though the adults and Dally told him not to. Also Johnny let Ponyboy get out of the church first so he got paralyzed instead of Ponyboy. Also Ponyboy said that Johnny listened to everyone's problems when they were feeling bad, and Ponyboy said he was kind of like the gangs pet. Two-bit …show more content…
Darry is a hero because he is always protecting Ponyboy, and is looking out for his grades. One example is at the beginning of the book when Ponyboy is walking home from the movie theatre and he is jumped and held down by multiple Socs, Darry came and ran the Socs off. Another reason that Darry is a hero is that he did not take the scholarship and doesn't go to collage, so that Ponyboy could stay in school even though Sodapop dropped out. Ponyboy had said that Darry was a popular kid at school and that he would've have done well in college, and this shows how much he sacrificed for Ponyboy. Ponyboy also said that he thought that at some points Darry was wishing he could go to college. Darry is also a hero because he works two jobs so that Ponyboy and Sodapop don't have to go to a boys home. Ponyboy mentioned multiple times about how he works a roofing job, and tries to work hard and well at that job, and he works another job. Darry is a hero because he supports, cares for, and sacrifices for his
...t like the rest of the Greasers he wouldn’t kill or nothing no matter what. They could of said Johnny not no killer but don’t push him because he will go off but instead they made it seem like he was a kid that lived in a household that didn’t care about him and that he was a punk and never stood up for himself.
..., even by Ponyboy, who is the youngest of the group and two years younger than Johnny. Dally, the toughest and the meanest guy in The Greasers, is Johnny’s idol and seeing how he acts in situations probably influenced Johnny’s choice of action. Watching these bigger guys close in on him and Ponyboy being drowned, he was probably thinking, ‘what would Dally do what would Dally do?’ So he did what he thought Dally would do he pulled out the knife and stabbed Bob Sheldon so he would have extra hands helping him to fight off the rest of the guys, but that did not happen because they ran off in fear of Johnny.
He is smart, and gets good grades in school. This is purposefully mentioned several times within the story, and people tend to be surprised to learn that he is a Greaser. In addition, some Greasers are nicer than people tend to think. When the church burned down, Ponyboy and Johnny run in to save the children without a second thought. They acted with selflessness, putting the safety of the children above their own. In the ambulance on the way to the hospital, Ponyboy is asked if he and Johnny are "professional heroes". He responds by telling the entire story of how they're Greasers and Johnny is wanted for murder, shocking the man in the ambulance. It is difficult for him to believe that a group of Greasers would do something so heroic. Johnny dies as a direct result of their actions, but neither Ponyboy nor Johnny regretted what they
Boom! Johnny drops to the floor. Kids are screaming. This is when Johnny is a hero for the second time in the story, The Outsiders. Johnny is a hero because he saved kids from a fire and Johnny saved Pony from dying.
Out of all of the members of the gang Johnny and Ponyboy were the closest, because they were the youngest and also they were not as tough as the other boys. After Ponyboy got in a fight with Darry about being late at getting home, Ponyboy ran to the lot and told Johnny that they were running away. Without hesitation the two boys took off running. Johnny needed no explanation. He had a rough life at home and without the support from the gang he may have already killed himself. Johnny just wanted to be there and support his friend like they had been supporting him through everything. At many points throughout the novel Ponyboy teaches or shows Johnny something new. “You know Johnny said slowly “I never noticed colors and clouds and stuff until you kept, reminding me about them. It seems like they were never there before” (Hinton,78). When Johnny says that to Ponyboy is gives readers a glimpse of how Johnny having Ponyboy in his life makes it better. Another key point of their friendship in the novel is after Johnny kills the Soc. This is a key point because they run off to Jay Mountain to hide from the police and while they are there they discover more about each other and themselves. The boys are at that church for about a week before Dally came to check in on them and while they were inside that church they read Gone with the Wind. As they read Gone with the Wind they started to make connections
The Protagonist “Ponyboy Curtis”, had Adversity with Darry. He tried his best to explain all the mistakes that he made, and Darry would just start yelling at him, and go completely insane. Ponyboy didn’t want to live with him that way, because his would’ve
...nny passed away a piece of each Greasers heart passed away as well. Ponyboy who usually aced his classes was lucky to get a C on assignments after Johnny deceased. He dazed off during classes and thought about the gang, mainly Johnny. While Dallas completely lost his mind when Johnny died. Dallas robbed a store to make sure the police followed him. He had made the bold decision to pull out his unloaded gun when he was surrounded by police officers. Dally new that once he pulled out his gun, his life was going to end. Dally had no reasons to stay alive since the only person he actually cared about passed away. Johnny spiritually gave Dally the courage and determination he needed to get through everyday when he was still alive. In other words, the loss and grief their group of Greasers underwent was what made all the boys make illogical decisions.
How come they are heroes? But then, when I thought about it, they are heroes. Pony boy is a hero because he is remorseless on being
“Since Mom and Dad were killed in an auto wreck, the three of us get to stay together only as long as we behave (2).” This explains why Ponyboy, Dally and Sodapop did not have parents. In the novel, this really effected their life and character. "…It was Darry. He hit me. I don't know what happened, but I couldn't take him hollering at me and hitting me too... He didn't use to be like that... we used to get along okay... before Mom and Dad died. Now he just can't stand me (2)." This shows that not having their parents anymore effected Darry’s character and how he treated Ponyboy, which in return effected how Ponyboy felt about himself in comparison to how he was treated. This illustrates that Ponyboy believes that Darry picks on him all the time. This shows that Darry was like a caring parent in a tough way,
The first Greaser that I believe is a hero was Ponyboy because he was mentally tough. An example is when he was still attending school and getting straight A’s. Another heroic act was when he stood by Johnny’s side after Johnny murdered Bob, the Soc. He ran away with him while risking the chance of getting into trouble. In chapter six, there was an important scene where Ponyboy was a real hero by being brave and tough. "I'll get them, don't worry!" I started at a dead run for the church, and the man caught my arm. "I'll get them. You kids stay out! I jerked loose and ran on." (Pg. 78) This was when they heard the children’s screams come from inside the church. Ponyboy ran in the burning church and saved the children without hesitation. These are some reasons why Ponyboy was a hero.
In the novel The Outsiders by S.E Hinton (1998), many of the greasers can be considered a hero, one of them is Darry Curtis. Darry Curtis is considered a hero because he is a selfless human that helps in whatever way he can and does what is right, no matter what could happen. Some examples of this are, when he sacrificed his scholarship so that he could take care of his family, he also took the responsibility of taking two jobs to provide for the family. Finally, he has the traits and characteristics of a hero, which are being courageous, selfless and physically gifted, also he takes the lead in action and is frequently looked to for guidance. A good example of Darry being a hero is when he decided to sacrifice his scholarship to keep his brothers with him.
Everyone pictured Darry as a strong and tough but seeing him cry at the hospital showed Ponyboy that he had feelings; that all this time when Darry shouts at Ponyboy, he actually just wants him to be careful. Ponyboy realizes this and his perspective on Darry changes instantly; from the cold hearted big brother, to the loving and caring big brother.
“A hero is someone who helps those in need and does not expect people to applaud or reward them for it”. A Greaser will always be a Greaser their convention is different than the Soc’s; they stick together, they support each other in hard times and they help each other; Johnny, Dally and Ponyboy are the three main Greasers and three unlikely heroes in the novel. They achieved this state by saving people's’ lives, help those in need, showing care and standing up for each other.
...al is the fact that Johnny always carries a knife when he is out. The reason being is that once, he got jumped by a group of socs. That day, Johnny swore to always have a pocket knife on him. This is his way to survive. Greasers and Socs have a huge rivalry between each other. Thus putting the greasers in danger because the Socs are always picking fights with them.If you need another example of survival, you can just look on page 71. After Johnny kills a Soc at a park, he and Ponyboy had to run away in order to not get caught by the cops or the fuzz as they call it. The boys find a church to sleep in for the night. They would figure out what to do in the morning. They cut and dye their hair in order not to be identified. As you already probably know, they dyed their hair because of survival. If they wanted to survive, they knew they would have to disguise themselves.
I think Ponyboy Curtis is a hero because he is only 14 years old and went back in a burning church to help save the 5 children. He knew that those 5 children's lives were worth so much more than his so he went back in knowing that he could have gotten seriously hurt in there, but he didn't care as long as he could try to help those children. That is how Ponyboy is a hero.
