Fate or Free Will? Everyone regrets bad decisions made in the past. People should not dwell on their past past mistakes but instead learn from them instead. For the Capulets and the Montagues in The Tragedy of Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare their actions and the actions of those around them leads to a great number of deaths of relatives and only children. Despite the somewhat unavoidable circumstances that occur in the drama, the characters react poorly defining the play as a tragedy. Friar Lawrence is an example of a character who reacted poorly to the circumstances laid out in front of him. He made decisions that he did not need to make, there is always two or more choices to every decision or else it is not a decision. For example, the Friar did not need to marry Romeo and Juliet against the parents wishes, even if he thinks it will resolve the fued. The Friar also has the opportunity to let the Lord and Lady Montague and Lord and Lady Capulet what is going on with their children. Towards the beginning of the play she encourages Juliet to marry Romeo and go out out to have fun. Then when Romeo is exiled she encourages Juliet to go against her marriage to Romeo and to marry Paris. Before Juliet enters the party the nurse says, “Go girl, seek happy nights to happy days,”(1.3.105). Then later she encourages Juliet to marry Paris against her marriage to Romeo. “I think it best you married with the County,” (3.5.445).She does not inform the Capulets about what their daughter is feeling and what she is doing, but she choses against letting them know which is a poor choice on her part.
