Figurative language is a key component in “The Diary of Anne Frank” because it shows the conflict in the story. The conflict starts when the families that are living in the attic of the building hear loud stomping outside. Goodrich states, “[Mr. Frank stops abruptly as he hears the sound of marching feet from the street below]”[pg. 707]. The importance of this quote is to show that the Franks are in a place where not a lot of grace is seen for their race. The House on Mango Street is a novel by Sandra Cisneros. It is set in a poor, Latino neighborhood around 1960. The main character, Esperanza, is expected to get married in order to support herself. However, Esperanza strives for independence, and seeks to end the cycle of abusive patriarchy that holds Mango Street in thrall. Through the use of syntax and figurative language, Cisneros establishes that a sense of not belonging can fuel an individual’s desire for a better future.
The title of the short story, “Four Directions” is symbolic for Waverly’s inner misconceptions. As she goes about her life, she is pulled in different ways by her past and her present. She is torn between her Chinese heritage and her American life. She never thought that instead of being pulled in four directions, she could take all of her differences and combine them. In the end she realizes this with the help of her mother. “The three of us, leaving our differences behind...moving West to reach East” (184), thought Waverly. The “Diary of Anne Frank” is a real diary written by Anne Frank, during the time of the Holocaust. She describes her days hiding in a secret annex with seven other people. Some days they got along and others they didn’t, but in the end they all respected each other. In the “Diary of Anne Frank,” Anne Frank says, “ I still believe, in spite of everything, that people are really good at heart.” This message serves as a theme throughout the diary. Throughout the diary, she explains how the people she spent her days with were good people at heart.
In “Queens, 1963”, the speaker narrates to her audience her observations that she has collected from living in her neighborhood located in Queens, New York in the midst of the Civil Rights Movement. The narrator is a thirteen-year-old female immigrant who moved from the Dominican Republic to America with her family. As she reflects on her past year of living in America, she reveals a superb understanding of the reasons why the people in her neighborhood act the way they do towards other neighbors. In “Queens, 1963” by Julia Alvarez, the poet utilizes diction, figurative language, and irony to effectively display to the readers that segregation is a strong part of the American melting pot.
After reading and watching The Diary of Anne Frank I realized there was many prominent differences and similarities from the script to the movie. One scene from the script was identical to the one in the movie, where they would become rigid and unmoving whenever the sounds of cars were heard. Furthermore, the scene repeated several times in a similar fashion throughout the movie. With this in mind, the director probably wanted the audience to know the dangerous position the Franks and the Van Daans were in. The characters know this as well, and this caused them to fear any noise.

Almost everyone in the book either loses or gives up their power in the end, thanks to Edmond. Anne Frank may be gone, but her legacy is left behind. Although everyone else died in different concentration camps they were sent to, Mr. Frank organized the hiding to the best of his ability. Mr. Frank demonstrated his great leadership qualities by thinking of others before himself, keeping a constructive and encouraging attitude, and making hard decisions. The play would not have been possible without Mr. Frank’s effort in getting Anne’s diary published. Through thick and thin, Mr. Frank sewed everything together.
The books Fahrenheit 451, written by Ray Bradbury, and The Last Book in The Universe, written by Rodman Philbrick, are similar in plot and theme. Both books highlight the negative effect of technology in futuristic dystopian worlds. The ideas of censorship play a big role in the two stories. While the ideas of both books may be similar, the way they have been written are very differently. Fahrenheit 451 has a unique style, full of symbolism, figurative language, and rich vocabulary which is Bradbury’s trademark. Hawthorne manages to create many metaphors within his novel The Scarlet Letter. The rose bush outside the prison door, the black man, and the scaffold are three metaphors. Perhaps the most important metaphor would be the scaffold, which plays a great role throughout the entire story.
