Ray Bradbury gives us a dark look into a possible future where machines fill the gaps in broken families, in his short story The Veldt. The Veldt deceives its readers into believing the family exist in a utopia, when in reality, the book suddenly descends into dystopian horror. The book starts out as playful, showing just how much the house does for the family, taking care of their every want and need. As we learn later, the nursery isn't such a blessing. The nursery is a malicious seed planted in the heart of the family, infecting the children by spoiling them and entertaining their darkest fantasies. Inflicting cracks in the already distant family, tearing them apart. We never get a glimpse of what kind of world this is, we only know of the
futuristic technology (flying rocket, smart house, and the nursery). We can make the logical assumption that this story takes place in the distance future. We understand the children are spoiled and ungrateful for all they have, not understanding the consequences of their actions. The moral Ray Bradbury was trying to display through the children and their actions is that technology cannot replace human empathy. The parents passed off the responsibility of raising their kids to technology that cannot discipline or teach empathy; consequently their children are ultimately as cold as the technology that raised them.
In “The Veldt” by Ray Bradbury, Lydia and George are parents “raising’’ Peter and Wendy in a smart house that can mostly do anything for them. The children are spoiled with technology and hardly communicate with their parents. The parents are forced to shut down the house in order for their children to communicate with them, but the children are furious with the decision. The parents walk into to the nursery and find that it was their fate all along. Bradbury uses symbolism, foreshadowing, and irony throughout the story.
The futuristic story begins by familiarizing the reader with this house that can do pretty much anything a normal family would do, such as cook, clean, and read. Every hour a mechanical voice box stops to announce the date, weather, or event that is happening at that particular time. “There Will Come Soft Rains” is arranged chronologically, giving the effect that everything is in order, but the more you read the more you realize it’s not. At a point in the story, the mechanical voice box recites a poem by Sara Teasdale, “There Will Come Soft Rains”, about how even after human extinction the nature and animals will still remain unaffected. He does this to explain the settings of the story, create suspense, set up a problem, get the reader predicting what's going to happen next, and to provide background information. He also uses symbolism of the Veldt to show characters motivation, create the setting, set up the problem, proved background information, and lastly to build suspense.
Dystopian worlds are an imagined place or environment in which everything is unpleasant or hazardous. These worlds make a criticism or warning about society through worst-case scenarios in which the protagonist feels trapped.
All the drastic changes that the world has been through, and Carr and Kefalas show that in their writing. These changes at some time made the current town, were they live, a thriving and prosperous place. People would move from their towns to these prospering communities to seek out the benefits that were offered. Many of those small towns are slowly fading into the background because of the modern world changes that big and upcoming cities that offering. These changes are creating new jobs and environments for the youth that are looking for change in the small towns that once were big and thriving, are now filled with the older generation that don’t want to make the change. They are looking to keep things consistent with the life they have been living; some changes in their eyes are not good, they are just creating problems. In Carr and Kefalas’s article they write about living in a small town called Ellis in Iowa. Carr and Kefalas talked to an employee working at a new factory in Ellis, “A machine operator living in Ellis complains about the strugglers facing old-fashion workers who find themselves trapped in a newfangled economy” (33). People living in small towns are unlikely to adapt to new changes, but are having to because of companies starting new factories in their community. Unfortunately, we live in a dystopian society and our world today is far from perfection. John Savage, from Brave New World by Aldous Huxley, V, from V for Vendetta by James McTeigue and Offred, from The Handmaid’s Tale by Margret Attwood, are all characters in a dystopian society. A dystopia is the vision of a society in which conditions of life are miserable and are characterized by oppression, corruption of government, and abridgement of human rights.
Ray Bradbury explores the idea that technology will replace the human race in areas where humanity cannot be replaced. In his story “The Veldt,” published originally as “The World the Children Made,” parents George and Lydia Hadley allow their children to be raised by the machines that take care of all the jobs in their house. They leave their children to play in a virtual-reality nursery, allowed to come and go as they please. The Hadley parents realize the nursery is stuck on an African veldt, where lions are always eating something off in the distance. In the end of the story, when the parents decide to unplug the house and learn to do the chores themselves for once, the children lock them in the nursery to be eaten by the lions. The Hadleys’ psychiatrist friend comes to take the children somewhere and finds them in the nursery. When he asks the children where their parents are, they respond, “oh, they’ll be here presently.” Then the daughter offers the doctor a cup of tea, as if nothing remarkable had happened that day at all. How are the children able to kill their parents so remorselessly? The answer is implied- the parents allowed machines to raise their kids, therefore depriving them of the one thing essential in child development- the teaching of compassion and love. Kurt Vonnegut’s science fiction, short story, “Harrison Bergeron” satirizes the defective side of an ideal, utopian American society in 2081, where “everyone was finally equal” (Vonnegut 1). When you first begin to read “Harrison Bergeron”, through an objective, nonchalant voice of the narrator, nothing really overly suggests negativity, yet the conclusion and the narrator's subtle description of the events show how comically tragic it really is. “The Veldt” by Ray Bradbury deals with some of the same fundamental problems that we are now encountering in this modern day and age, such as the breakdown of family relationships due to technology. Ray Bradbury is an American writer who lived from 1920 to 2012 (Paradowski). Written in 1950, “The Veldt” is even more relevant to today than it was then. The fundamental issue, as Marcelene Cox said, “Parents are often so busy with the physical rearing of children that they miss the glory of parenthood, just as the grandeur of the trees is lost when raking leaves.” Technology creating dysfunctional families is an ever increasing problem. In the story, the Hadley family lives in a house that is entirely composed of machines. A major facet of the house is the nursery, where the childrens’ imagination becomes a land they can play in. When the parents become worried about their childrens’ violent imagination, as shown with their fascination with the African veldt, the children kill them to prevent them from turning it off. Ray Bradbury develops his theme that technology can break up families in his short story "The Veldt" through the use of foreshadowing, symbolism, and metaphor.

Dystopian novels are written to reflect the fears a population has about its government and they are successful because they capture that fright and display what can happen if it is ignored. George Orwell wrote 1984 with this fear of government in mind and used it to portray his opinion of the current government discretely. Along with fear, dystopian novels have many other elements that make them characteristic of their genre. The dystopian society in Orwell’s novel became an achievement because he utilized a large devastated city, a shattered family system, life in fear, a theme of oppression, and a lone hero.
In The Machine Stops, E.M. Forster projects life years from now where people live underground with extreme technological advances. Also, people live separated in little rooms where they find a variety of buttons they can press in order to perform any task they desire. They do not communicate with people face to face as often as we do now. Without a doubt, their society is very different from ours. All of the inhabitants are used to living along with the Machine and it is hard for them to imagine life without everything the Machine is able to facilitate. People are so caught up with technology that they find it absurd to spend time in nature. Because of the dependence people have towards the Machine, they have somewhat lost their humanity and become a machine themselves. The characters Vashti and Kuno perfectly represent how inhumane or humane a person could potentially be in such an environment.
