Animal Farm
Animal Farm, by George Orwell, is a novel about a dystopian society. A dystopia is “an imaginary place where people are unhappy and usually afraid because they are not treated fairly,” while a utopia is “an imaginary place in which the government, laws, and social conditions are perfect.” The story took place on a farm where the farmers treat their animals poorly. The animals rebelled and took control from the owner, Jones, so that all animals could be treated equally and set commandments on how the farm should be run. However, the more educated pigs and their leader, Napoleon, took advantage and control of this situation. Then, they used their power to get special privileges for themselves. Therefore, Animal Farm was a dystopian

The pigs were able to change the original rules that most animals supported to let themselves get more pleasure and food. This hurt all the other animals because no other animal was smart enough to challenge them successfully. For example, the seventh commandment stated “All animals are equal” but it was changed to “All animals are equal, but some animals are more equal than others.” Another example of manipulation was when Squealer, the messenger for Napoleon, said “Do you know what would happen if we pigs failed in our duty? Jones would come back!... surely there is no one among you who wants to see Jones come back?” This was an example of using fear to manipulate animals because the animals are afraid of Jones coming back. Squealer was making them afraid of disobeying.
Animal Farm was a dystopia. This is for three reasons. One reason is that most of the animals were treated poorly by the animals in charge. Another is that the animals have to obey the leaders with no voting or choice. Lastly, the leaders manipulate the animals. This would not be a great place to live because animals lived with unhappy lives. Since a dystopia is a place where people, or in this case animals, live unhappy lives, Animal Farm was a
It has a detail in common with the other two stories, there are punishments of death for minor offences. In this story there is also a form of higher people controlling everything and have too much power of the people. The pigs in Animal Farm are the leaders, they get to eat plentifully while everyone else starves and hardly makes it by. The pigs display something close to a totalitarian leadership style. The fact that these animals can do human activities with relative ease is dystopian in itself, and some tasks they can do better than the humans ever
The actions of the pigs express this theme by starting with good intentions, but slowly becoming more and more like what they were trying to avoid. In the beginning of the story Old Major gives a speech to the animals on the farm, and in this speech he mentions how cruel the humans are. During his speech Old Major uses Boxer the horse as an example when he says “You, Boxer, the very day that those great muscles of yours lose their power, Jones will sell you to the knacker, who will cut your throat and boil you down for the foxhounds.” (Orwell 11). He then proceeds to tell the animals that once they revolt the cruelty will end, and at first it does, but soon the pigs begin to act more like humans. The pi...
Squealer uses propaganda such as rhetorical questions, lies and threats to convince the animals to believe the pigs. Unfortunately for the animals, they are easily led. If it were not for their blind devotion, trust and naivety, they could easily see how the pigs gradually gained power. The pigs also use the dogs as force to keep the animals ‘in line’, discouraging them from trying to rebel.
Animal Farm, written by George Orwell, is a dystopian allegory. Its book cover sports a red and black background, with a pig (presumably Snowball) sneaking in front of a windmill. Set in Manor Farm, a group of farm animals are mistreated by their owner, Mr. Jones. Shortly before Old Major, an old, highly-respected pig, dies, he tells all the animals to revolt against Mr. Jones. After his death, and shortly after, the expulsion of Mr. Jones, leadership on the farm is divided between Snowball and Napoleon, two intelligent pigs who utilize conflicting methods of rule. Initially, they held equal sway among the other, less intelligent residents of the farm. However, when Snowball, a passionate speaker, tried to convince the farm to build a windmill to make their lives easier, Napoleon set vicious dogs he had raised himself to drive Snowball out of the farm. Justifying this by saying the windmill was a useless idea that would overburden the farm, Napoleon takes sole authority of the farm, leading the animals in an increasingly harsh manner. Ironically, Napoleon also makes a plan to build a...
...re breaking every rule that they themselves had put forth in accordance with Old Major’s revolutionary vision. Animal Farm was a mirror image of communism gone awry in the Soviet Union. It also shows Marx’s naivety of the fact that there will always be the clever that take advantage of the ignorant. By keeping the population ignorant, the clever gain even more power, which is was happened in the Soviet Union and Animal Farm. The ones that took part in the revolutions would never realize that they were holding the short end of the stick, just as they were in their previous state of affairs. They were cold, miserable, and starving. In their brainwashed state they still believed that the dismal state they were in was better than their situation before the revolution. George Orwell finished his book on a somber note, the state in which Joseph Stalin left the Soviet Union.
Throughout the story, the first signal that illustrates the corruption in pigs started right after the animals chased away Mr. Jones. When the animals milked the cows and discussed about what to do with all the milk, Napoleon cried “Never mind the milk, comrades…placing himself in front of the buckets” (p18) and then all buckets of milk disappeared. This is foreshadowing that later Napoleon may become the kind of leader who keeps everything good for himself and does not care about others, and this actually happened later. Several days later, someone found out that all the milk was mixed in pigs’ mash everyday as well as the apples and pointed that pigs broke the rule of “All animals are equal” (p17). This time the pigs cannot stay calm anymore. Squealer firstly said that they pigs actually do not like milk and apples and the reason why they added those into their mash was because they were ‘brainworkers’ and those were good for their brain and only when they were healthy enough the other’s safety can be guaranteed. After that, Squealer used repetition...
The novel “Animal Farm” was written by the author name George Orwell. Animal Farm is a novel based upon the lives of a society of animals wanting a better life for themselves living on the Manor Farm. The setting of the book is a farm called “Manor Farm”. The theme of this book is that the animals should make a stand; if they continue doing the same thing they will continue getting the same results. It is better to be free and starving, than to be fed and enslaved.
Ever since humans have conquered or established a society, their imperative duty is to try to create a utopian environment. All you can think about in its perfect sense, no mistakes, just everything impeccable. Unfortunately, one can only dream. In which as we are humans, we make mistakes and therefore defeats the meaning of a utopia, and converts into a dystopia. The absolute contrary to what we desire. It all starts with one person sharing their perfect ideas, and illuminating a light to a darkness that every other person has. That light creates hope and the people follow that person in which then over time, gets consumed by some emotion or purpose and thinks of themselves and puts everybody else at ruins, creating a world in which those people wish they never pursued those ideas.
Orwell's book, "Animal Farm", is full of satire. This satire is Orwell's way of communicating problems and resolutions. The main message in Animal Farm is that power cannot be divided equally. There will never be equality for all. Once power is obtained it is always abused, and power causes all to think as the leader does. Equality does not exist, for it is impossible for everyone to be equal.
Animal Farm is not only a novel about rebellious animals; it is a study of the corruption of society and humanity in an enclosed environment. The actions of the anthropomorphic animals that now rule Manor Farm represent the human society as a whole. Animal Farm by George Orwell is a novel which contains syntax that exemplifies power and hierarchies and diction that portrays character’s will and intention.
Through use of language, the pigs appeal to the animals basic hopes and desires of a better life and a better future. They make others work extremely hard, while they themselves rest and unfairly reap most of the benefits of the work. For example, “Now comrades,... to the hayfield! Let us make it a point of honor get in the harvest more quickly than Jones and his men do.” Later in chapter three, Squealer is sent to justify the pigs selfishness and to convince the animals that the pigs are working in their favor. He said, “You do not imagine, I hope, that we pigs are doing this in a spirit of selfishness and privilege? Many of us actually dislike milk and apples...Milk and apples contain substances absolutely necessary to the well-being of a pig...the whole management and organization of this farm depend on us.” This how the animals are persuaded to believe almost anything without question.
... In the end, George Orwell’s dark brooding fairy tale Animal Farm proves to be a symbolic and understanding book. In its pages we can see the contrast between a supposedly communistic state where everyone is equal and the same, and how in the end it only leads to a total dictatorial establishment of totalitarianism, where everything is controlled by an elite group. Though Animal Farm was established with the idea of every animal being equal, in the end, the voice of the scheming pigs was the only one heard. Secondly, the book powerfully symbolizes key figures that have appeared in history.
The pigs used it to brainwash. Brainwashing became a useful tool used by the pigs. For example the dogs had puppies and they were taken away and forgotten. Later the puppies became dogs and they had been brainwashed and were now guards for the pigs. The pigs were eventually living in the house. The animals did not understand, but Squealer gave a very compelling speech. Squealer said “the pig’s, who were the brains of the farm, should have a quiet place to work in.”(66). By saying the pigs were the brains of the farm, Squealer was trying to show the animals that without the pigs they would not be so successful. By bringing up the intelligence of the pigs versus the other animals, the animals could not say no or protest because they know they are not as smart as the pigs. This persuasive method was very effective for the pigs to keep their power because they made the animals think that by having them rule, they are free and everything is for their benefit. Language was used to manipulate the animals for a certain end. The pigs in the end became like the people which was what they manipulated the animals for. The pigs completely changed through the book. By the end, everything they did was to fit in with the humans which is why they
