Doublethink affects everybody everyday both in 1984 and in present day. Orwell defines doublethink as “To know and to not know, to be conscious of complete truthfulness while telling carefully constructed lies, to hold simultaneously two opinions which cancelled out, knowing them to be contradictory and believing in both of them, to use logic against logic,to repudiate morality while laying claim to it, to believe that democracy is impossible and that the Party was the guardian of democracy. To forget, whatever it was necessary to forget, then to draw it back into memory again at the moment when it was needed, and then promptly to forget it again, and above all, to apply the same process to the process itself” (Orwell 32). To thrive they must have a truth-committed and non truth-committed approach to things. This is how doublethink, the expected mental attitude, is achieved. Chapman states that ” Doublethink is not just the ability to believe simultaneously two contradictory statements. It is the ability both to care passionately and not to care at all about the truth status of certain propositions” (Chapman). In 1984 O’Brien is required to commit to the truth of the statements that the party tells him while knowing otherwise. If they are capable of knowing both the facts about themselves then they are successful. This is where they must have truth-committed and non truth-committed attitude towards the statements. This is the mental way of thinking that Winston is required to master. Another example of doublethink in 1984 is war. The Inner Party knows that the war is spurious. However, they still believe in the war and the stories that have come from it. “The Party is capable of holding two different sets of truths for two different sets of purposes” (Chapman) no matter the situation. The Outer Party has come to believe that whatever the Party holds to be true is true. In present day, adopting both attitudes is of course an option, but the most important part is that we have a choice to choose between the …show more content…

The big question is if we are at war with them or not. When the secretary of the white house was asked this question he said “What we are doing is we are working very aggressively with international partners, with Iraqi and Kurdish security forces, to take the steps necessary to mitigate the threat that’s posed by ISIS” (Dykes). The thing that is contradicting itself is the news channels. They are saying that we are not fighting ISIS but then are telling facts of what tactics we are using to fight against them, In fact, Fox News reported that no military action has been used on ISIS yet. The crazy thing about this is that while it was on the bottom of the screen, in the top right corner it gave a list of ways that the US military was preparing for the fight. This is a case of doublethink that is very obvious and quite embarrassing for the news station and reporter. This same kind of doublethink is seen in 1984. Winston knows that these certain men did exist but the party told him that they did not. However, he had seen letters from them and pictures of them so he knew for a fact they were real. The crazy part is that even though he knew for a fact in his head that the men were real and had existed, he also believed what the party was saying that they never did exist. This is just like the ISIS ordeal in that two contradicting sets of evidence were right in front of them yet they believed
