An epic hero is a noble and brave person that accomplishes large goals. These noble and brave people have characteristics such as being selfless and loyal. What makes these characteristics so important in an epic hero? Being selfish can make the epic hero stray from the objective. On the other hand, being loyal shows commitment and dedication. An example of epic heroes are Dory and Odysseus. Disney’s movie Finding Dory is about Dory’s journey to find her parents. Homer’s epic The Odyssey, Odysseus goes on an expedition home after the Trojan War. Both Dory and Odysseus face many risks on their journey. However, Disney’s Dory and Homer’s Odysseus are both heroes that accomplish immense feats, but Dory is a more exceptional heroine than Odysseus as Dory is more loyal and selfless than Odysseus. …show more content…

Dory is more dedicated than Odysseus as Dory never gets sidetracked from the original goal. “...Follow the signs to open ocean. Follow the signs to open ocean...” (Disney’s Finding Dory). As shown in the paraphrase, Dory never strays from her original goal to find her parents, even when there are so many things Dory may have never seen or known around her. Regardless of all these possible distractions, Dory continues on her search for her parents. However, Odysseus is easily side tracked. For instance, “... I have been detained long by Calypso ... who held me in her smooth caves...” (Homer’s The Odyssey). Odysseus does not care enough about his home to pass a chance at sleeping with women other than Penelope. Although Calypso did keep Odysseus captive, Odysseus still would have been able to leave her island in less than seven years. This shows that Odysseus was not loyal enough to at least try to get back to his journey home as the gods had to tell Calypso to let Odysseus go.
