Great Tragedy A person with dishonor can cause a honorable person pain. In The Tragedy of Julius Caesar by William Shakespeare, he had a way of making his work memorable. The contrast between the tragic hero Brutus and the independent Caesar led to the theme of dishonor. Caesar contrasts from Brutus because the people wanted Brutus king. According to Shakespeare, ”That you do love me, I am nothing jealous; What you would work me to, I have some aim; How I have thought of this, and of these times”(I.ii.162-164). What Shakespeare is saying is that Brutus has thought of being king, but he is Caesar’s friend. Shakespeare himself writes, “I will do so, but look you, Cassius, The angry spot doth glow on Caesar’s brow, And all the rest look like a chidden train;”(I.ii.182-184). Shakespeare’s point is that Brutus knows what the people want, but it is hard because Caesar is his friend. Shakespeare …show more content…
Shakespeare states, “why, I, that did love Caesar when I struck him, Have thus proceeded”(III.i. 182-183). For instance, Shakespeare means that even though Brutus killed Caesar, he loved him. Shakespeare himself writes, “And that we are contented Caesar shall have all true rites and lawfulceremonies. It shall advantage more than do us wrong”(III.i. 240-242). Shakespeare’s point is that Brutus feels like Caesar’s death should help everyone, not hurt anyone, Shakespeare states, “for Brutus is an honorable man”(III.i. 83-84). Basically, Shakespeare is saying sarcastically that Brutus really is honorable for killing Caesar, but he does not mean that. To put it another way, Brutus thought he was helping out everyone by killing Caesar be he was not. Hence, the difference between honorable Caesar and dishonorable Brutus led to the theme of dishonor. Since, the people wanted Brutus king, Caesar is killed by Brutus, which was seen as dishonorable. Even though Caesar was killed, Brutus thought he was
What makes a person dishonorable? Dishonorable is defined as bringing shame or disgrace on someone or something. In Julius Caesar Brutus does not stand with his morals when he is asked to help take part in the murder of Caesar. Secondly, Brutus agrees to murder one of his closest friends. Finally, Brutus murders Caesar then goes to kill himself as well so that he does not have to suffer the outcome which makes him even more dishonorable. In William Shakespeare’s The Tragedy of Julius Caesar Marcus Brutus is not an honorable man because he betrayed his country and his dearest friend.
Brutus killed his dear friend because of his ambition. If only today’s leaders had some ambition! He said that he loves Rome more than Caesar and that is why he committed one of the most dishonorable acts a human being can commit. After the act, Antony appropriately and sarcastically called Brutus an honorable man. Unlike Brutus, Antony knew what honor was.
“Not that I loved Caesar less, but that I loved Rome more.” (3.2.24) This quote reflects the motive of Brutus for the assassination of his friend, Caesar. I believe Brutus killed him not out of disrespect, but in a selfless act to protect Rome from the decree of Caesar yet to come. I also believe that he did this out of force from the manipulation from his “friend” Cassius. In Shakespeare's “Julius Caesar”, Brutus’ two most significant characteristics are virtue and unconscious hypocrisy. In order to fully understand these characteristics, it is necessary to analyze all other contributing characteristics, the manipulation of friendship that Cassius uses against him, and the motivations for
Honor: “Honesty fairness, or integrity in one 's beliefs and actions.” Honesty can be a good and bad trait to have, being too honest can affect a person greatly. In William shakespeare 's play, The Tragedy of Julius Caesar, Caesar returns to Rome having defeated Pompey. The Romans wanted to crown him king. later caesar is killed by conspirators due to his ambition. After his murder common people are enraged and a civil war breaks out across Rome. Many characters die along the way. Throughout the historical play Shakespeare points out many personality traits as characters struggle to gain or remain in power. A closer examination of two main characters reveals the results of human nature. Two main leaders, Caesar and Brutus share similar and
William Shakespeare's play, Julius Caesar, has a heavy focus on honor. The characters in the play have a tendency to refer back to honor and the honor of Rome, but are they really as honorable as they say? Honor is a very abstract concept that is widely applicable in many situations, but what is it? To honor someone is to show them respect, and to be honorable is to act in a way that deserves respect and admiration. The characters of Julius Caesar, for the most part, are all seeking some form of honor, but do they achieve it? Three of the best examples of honor in Julius Caesar are Brutus, Cassius, and Portia. With varying levels of honor, these characters display the spectrum well.
Brutus was tricked into believing that Caesar would not be fit to be king, and would destroy the place Brutus loves, Brutus killed Caesar to protect Rome. Despite what Brutus did, he did only what he thought was the only thing he could do to save Rome. He thought not about his position he thought about the people. Yet he killed Caesar off
The fact that Brutus killed Caesar for his country meant that even though he murdered somebody, a friend, he still did it for something much bigger than himself. Like Brutus said, he killed Caesar because it was “not that I loved Caesar less, but that I loved Rome more” (Julius Caesar Act 3 Scene 2 Shakespeare). I think that is very noble of him, because if it weren’t for the act of murder, he would most definitely be a hero. If it were not for him not giving Caesar a chance first, he would most definitely be a hero. If it weren’t for his morals being manipulated by another person, he would most definitely be a hero. There is a lot of controversy about the topic and what makes Brutus a hero or villain. The question about which one he really is makes you think. I feel that even though he was a good man, the small details made the “villain” side of him surface much more than the “hero”
Throughout the play, Brutus speaks about honor and his loyalty to his country. These two concepts become major conflicts for him when it comes to his friendship and loyalty to Caesar. Brutus life is conducted by the concept of honor. He constantly throughout the play speaks of how honorable he is and how honorable men should live. He 's very proud of how Romans view him as a noble and honorable man, who fights for what is right and is always following the moral and ethical code. Brutus ends up using the concept of honor and loyalty to his country as a reason why Caesar must die. He 's convinced that his countrymen will thank him for saving them from a tyrant and that Rome would be much better off without Caesar, but it ends up being a big miscalculation
...s’ views and opinions very clearly. We are also able to see the flaws that he embeds. However, Caesar remains a mystery throughout the play as he is slain very early. Caesar enjoys being loved by the people and enjoys holding his status but Brutus wonders how the best power of Rome can be accomplished and turns to assassination and manipulation as it is the only method of removing Caesar. In general, Brutus is moral while Caesar is immoral.
Caesar and Brutus were truly noble people. Caesar was a dignified and courageous man. He gained his power through hard work and courage. However, Caesar was marked by a weakness: he wanted too much power. This weakness proved to be fatal in the play. Brutus, on the other hand, was a strong leader throughout the whole play. People listened to him easily and he showed his nobility by always being open to others. Despite his good character, he did make one fatal mistake in judgment. He killed Caesar thinking he would gain too much power, yet it was truly his friend Cassius’s jealously of Caesar that truly snared him into the conspiracy.
Julius Caesar - A Comparison of Brutus and Cassius In the play Julius Caesar, written and performed by William Shakespeare, there are many characters, but two, Brutus and Cassius, stood out. The play begins in Rome, where a celebration of Julius Caesar's victory over the former ruler of Rome, Pompeii. The victory leads to Caesar's betrayal by his jealous companions. Senators and other high status figures are jealous of Caesar's new and growing power, while others, like Brutus, fear the tyrannical rule Caesar could enforce.
In Shakespeare’s Julius Caesar, Cassius and Brutus are two main characters who act against Julius Caesar. Cassius functions as a foil to Brutus because Cassius is rather cunning and dishonorable while Brutus is honorable and wants to do what he believes is best for the Roman society.
In Julius Caesar, Brutus and Cassius both commit the evil deed of killing Caesar, yet the readers blame only Cassius. Shakespeare secretly places many techniques of repetition and point of view into the dialogue so that Cassius is given a negative attitude and Brutus a positive one. Brutus is viewed as an honorable, virtuous man while Cassius is viewed as being selfish.
William Shakespeare's play, The Tragedy of Julius Caesar, was mainly based on the assassination of Julius Caesar. The character who was the mastermind behind the assassination was, ironically, Marcus Brutus, a senator and close friend to Julius Caesar. But what would cause a person to kill a close friend? After I examined Brutus' relationship towards Caesar, his involvement in the conspiracy and his importance to the plot it all became clear. Brutus had one particular reason for killing Caesar and that was for the good of the people and the republic. Brutus had no personal reason for killing Caesar. Some of his most admirable traits were his morality and leadership skills.
Revenge. Revenge causes one to act blindly without reason. It is based on the principle of an eye for an eye, however this principle is not always a justified one to follow. In Julius Caesar, Antony seeks to avenge the death of Caesar. Antony acts on emotion which leads to the demise of Brutus, who is a noble man that does not deserve to be killed. Revenge is a central theme within Julius Caesar. This is demonstrated through Antony's desire to avenge Caesar's death, and also the return of Julius Caesar's ghost. Revenge is again exemplified through the violent course of action, which is taken by the Plebeians in an attempt to seek justice for the assassination of their Roman superior.
