1. What is Luo’s central argument in this OpEd piece? Are these examples of personal, cultural, institutional discrimination?
Luo’s central argument in his OpEd piece is that there is a large disparity in racial inequality between blacks and whites when it comes to employment. But Luo says that this difference is even more pronounced for those with a college degree. According to Luo, the unemployment rate in 2009 for black male graduates, 25-years-old and up, was 8.4%, while for a white male of the same credentials, the rate was 4.4%. Luo points out that he does not think that this discrimination is intentional (which usually correlates to personal discrimination). Instead, he thinks employers are used to gravitating toward people who are similar to them, meaning that the discrimination blacks face in the workforce is due to cultural discrimination. There are laws that prohibit institutional discrimination, as well as legislation that encourages a diverse workspace, so there is nothing built into the system that is discriminatory. We have a long history of racism in America that has been structured to favor White people. These stereotypes came from the Ku Klux Klan, also known as the KKK, who spread these ideas like wildfire. These ideas were drilled into people 's heads, and these ideas were taken as true facts, and this influenced them to do actions that can 't be proven to be racist, but have a racist motive. For instance, relating to the employment, there were two obvious hierarchical differences between the black and the white, and women and men. According to Kimberle (2015), in the late 1970, the employment opportunities for black people and women were still in the straitened circumstance, furthermore, even if there were chances for them, “... the black job were men’s job, and the women’s job were only for whites.” (Kimberle Cranshaw 2015). In other words, there was no opportunity for the black women. In this case, the unjust discriminatory treatment for black women simply resulted from their intersected identities as a “black” and “woman” both were marginalized in the society. Other races have heard so many stereotypes and stories about African Americans and they also grew up being taught certain beliefs which become part of the economy.
