Cultural Observation Paper Since clothing is one of the items that can represent and show people’s identity and a part of characteristics, people spend enough time and money to dress up. Although people put meanings and purposes on their clothing, it is still hard to judge people by just looking at their appearances because people dress the way they do for numerous reasons. The following is a cultural observation of a group of people based on their outfits. It was taken at a small café near CSULB on Sunday evening.
Individual Description There were more than twenty people in the café, and there was a group of three men sitting together and spending time with their books and laptops. One of them wore a grey

Since fashion and styles are all different depends on certain events, times, and places, there are different groups of people wearing different styles. For example, college students wearing a casual shirt and jeans have different values than businessmen wearing a formal dress shirt and trousers. Even though there is no specific dress code in school, it would be little weird if a student wears a prom dress in school. Dress can tell what a group of people value and what they …show more content…
I might characterize the group of three men as American because many Americans like to wear denims and t-shirts. American fashion looks effortless and casual and comfortable. Americans prefer comfort and simple yet classic. They don’t follow every trend, and they want to keep their own styles because they know exactly what styles suit them. They like to wear loose fit casual clothes with lighter fabric and neutral colors. Also, many Americans, especially men, like to wear brand name clothes because they want better quality and a brand’s
In “The Meaning of Adornment,” a sub-chapter within “Distinction and Display in the Visiting Scene,” Meneley explains how important adornment (fashion) is for Zabidi women. The women made sure that they publicly dress too impressed because they know that their families and themselves will be judged (Meneley 1996: 109). Zabidi women become the active participators when they dress appropriately to their culture to ensure their families’
To summarize, fashion is just another outlet through which we can view our ever changing world. It is just as important as literature, cinema, and other means of creative expression that document history. However, fashion plays an even bigger role than most other art forms because it can shape the identity of a generation. Similarly, the clothes you wear can tell a story about who you are and your part in shaping a culture. In history class we often view historical events and facts so objectively that we forget that the people we read about had their own colorful culture as we do. Observing fashion and fashion history, ultimately, breathe life into the past and help us to understand how we operate as a society.
There have been many things that described people throughout history. One of the most dominant ways was the style of clothing. Through cultural preference and materials available there is consistency as well as diversity in clothing. Though clothes in the Middle Ages were somewhat primitive compared to today’s garments, the quality clothing had no effect on the people’s freedom of expression through fashion.
Dress codes regulate what can be worn in certain places, such as schools and facilities. These codes are controversial where ever they are enforced. People tend to think that the government does not have the power to tell them they cannot wear certain articles of clothing and the fact that some schools do it can throw people into a fit. Some people believe that dress codes stifle personal expression, that a dress code is the same thing as a uniform. Many people do not remember that individualism goes beyond clothes, and that a dress code will help kids to be more than the clothes they have or do not have. Dress codes allow students to set themselves apart from others by their actions not their appearance.
For most students dressing up a specific way is the way they bring forth their personality and express some sort of freedom they possess by being different. In the article, “Arguments Against School Uniforms,” Neil Kokemuller wrote, “A major reason students, as well as some parents and educators, don’t like uniforms is that they restrict student individuality.” From my personal experiences people can tell what type of person someone is by looking at their clothes as well as their behavior. For example, in school we are often told to
...o contextual influences and past experiences. Therefore it is almost impossible to pre-empt the ways in which others will perceive you. Over time ideas will change and therefore alter the ways in which we look back on past clothing choices. Whilst symbolism in fashion may no longer be subject to laws as it was in the 14th century or defined by strict social rules in the 17th century, the clothes we wear are still today subject to imposed social ideals. Apart from distinguishing one status group from another, a style of dress may also aid group cohesiveness, provide the individual with an identity and a feeling of belonging, and communicate the wearer’s attitudes and interests. The ways in which we interpret others and present ourselves for interpretation is the only true way that we can be individual. Symbolism in clothing may not seem as obvious or important nowadays as it was in times of extreme social bigotry, but it is still highly prevalent and has remained one of the most effective ways to project our desired image to those around us. ‘The state of a person’s clothes is synonymous with self respect and is a sign of responsibility’ (www. For example, if people saw me wear Concords, they would categorize me as being into basketball or hip hop. It is also mostly guys who are wearing basketball shoes that notice my shoes. Therefore, it makes me feel masculine and makes me feel like I belong to the basketball or hip hop culture, but at the same time, I feel like I do not belong to a certain group. Thus, fashion is different in ethnics group, gender, and class because it serves to unite people or to establish a separation from other groups. It originated from women in order to make up for their disadvantage status, middle class in order to increase their social status and marginal social groups for their lack of social importance and cities for social density and wealth (Fashion, 310). Therefore, fashion play an important role in our lives back then and
In a public setting like a high school, how a student or students dress, can have a negative effect on the entire student body, even with a dress code. On
Through the media, people around the world can see how Middle East women are treated by their clothing they are required to wear. As a young woman looking at the world, clothing is an important part to many women’s identity which is the same in the Middle East. Most people can identify a Middle East woman based on
Clothing has always been an important part of society, with evidence from the earliest human civilizations. In history, climate, religion and political factors played a role in the fabrication, styling and even color of the garments that people wore. Today, the fashion industry is multi-faceted, and while climate and religion are still some factors in how we dress, there are many more influences in what we choose to wear. Time and time again, designers reference historical styles and push them into modern trends. Subcultures illustrate how a particular way of dressing can transform into a lifestyle. Ethnic fashion ties in with a specific culture’s values and beliefs. By looking at clothing in other societies around the world, as well as the many global subcultures, we can learn a lot about the depth and complexity of the members that make this world colorful and diverse.
There have been many instances where I am stopped and commented on what I’m wearing. Depending on a single item of clothing, I am either a “certified hippie”, “lesbian”, or “law student”. This has brought me to raise an important social question: How have fashion and advertising built identity stereotypes? Stereotyping can have a strong and negative impact on a person, especially younger generations that are now at an influential stage in their mental development. By subjecting them to these stereotypes based on what they wear, they may begin to think of and see themselves as society claims, rather than who they are or aspire to be. By conducting further research on stereotyping in fashion designs through their advertisements, the aim of this research is to understand the history and social ideas behind fashion. By thoroughly understanding the problem, a solution would be easier to reach. In order to gain further insight on the matter, two practitioners have been selected: Dr. Rebecca Arnold and Dr. Roman Meinhold.
The world of fashion is an exciting one and people have become a part of it (Jennifer and Kim, 2010). Fashion is a word that can mean different things, to some people it means what celebrities or models wear on a public event. To others, fashion means the dressing style that people can wear it for their daily basis. Understand the definition of fashion is a basis of discussing the luxury consumption (Jennifer and Kim, 2010). Tortora and Eubank defined fashion as a way of behaving or some things and must be accepted by many members of group (Tortora and Eubank, 2005). For instance, the way of behaving include a wide variety of activities, such as the words people speak, the clothes people wear and the lifestyle people have. The majority of a
In conclusion, fashion will speak out a person’s social signal, people dress on designs that blend with their social class. Just as population, social activities and fashion are changing with time. Fashion has made clothing to be convinient, everything needs to be done with the least effort and spend the least time.
A dress code enforces discipline toward learning by changing a person’s attitude toward success. Students generally act the way they are dressed. With fewer fashion distractions, school will be seen as a priority for teaching and learning rather than trend competitions. This alteration leads to modification in grades because it’s much easier to focus when everyone is dressed alike. Furthermore, a student’s attendance also improves; with the relief of picking out a new outfit every morning.
