Martin Luther King Jr, is a very courageous person. He stood up for what he believed in and took risks and in the process he even got hurt. In To Kill A Mockingbird by Harper Lee , the characters in the story are also very courageous. Being courageous could mean to take risks, do something you're scared of and stand up for what you believe in even if you don’t want to.
To begin with, to be courageous is many things but one thing could be to take risks just like in the book To Kill A Mockingbird, Atticus says “ I'm simply defending a negro-his name is Tom Robinson”(75). This means that Atticus is taking risks by taking the case of a black man and trying to defend him and everybody is judging him. Others might argue that he had to defend him and was forced to, but when you consider everybody in the town of Maycomb judging him and thinking he’s crazy for taking it, it takes a lot of …show more content…

For instance,when Scout was scared of walking home in the dark to the pageant, she says “You hear my costume rustling” I said it more to convince myself(260). This means that even though Scout and Jem were scared, they had to get home and that took courage because it was very dark out and they thought someone was going to scare them. Others might argue that this is not courageous because they were forced to go home and didn’t have any other way besides tio walk, however they could've just asked someone from the pageant to give them a ride home. In addition to having courage , Jem had courage by reading to Miss Dubose. Scout says “Jem and I hated her”(99). One day Scout said hey to Miss Dubose and she yells “ Don't you say hey to me you ugly girl !”(99). This means to be courageous because even through Jems hatred for her and he was scared of reading to her he found out she is very brave and glad he had courage to read to her. This proves that being courageous is to do things you're scared of, just like Jem and
