Barbara De Angelis once said “we don’t develop courage by being happy every day. We develop it by surviving difficult times and challenging adversity.” When a person lives a life of difficulty and hardship someone is more likely to develop skills that a leisured life person won’t. Who is more likely to succeed by themselves? Is it the people who have been independent through tough times and found how to use their resources to solve their problems; Or a person who runs a drama free life where they always have help. In every hardship someone faces, they gain some courage each time, which helps overcome the next one. “The Odyssey,” by Homer is a poem about a man, Odysseus, who gains the courage to overcome many obstacles thrown at him while also …show more content…
learning many life lessons. Odysseus learned many things while reluctantly being away from his home demonstrating that a person's courage is the greatest virtue if knowledge is gained. The characterization displayed by Odysseus makes this evident. The suitors in his home is a clear event that demonstrates courage. The symbol of the scar is used by him and his family that helps clarify this virtue. Homer shows this characterization in Odysseus with Polyphemus and his cave. To get him and his men out of the cave, Odysseus tries to do anything he can to escape alive. Odysseus, greets the cyclops and tells him his name is “Nobody” to trick him, he then continues to give him strong wine so he will fall asleep. Once the giant falls asleep, Odysseus and his men blind Polyphemus in order to escape the next day. “‘My friends, Nobody is trying to kill me,’ moaned Polyphemus [...] Odysseus busied himself by tying the sheep together in sets of three. Under each set he tied one of his men.”(46). Odysseus takes charge so that he can save his men from, Polyphemus, the cyclops that was trying to eat them all. This shows that Odysseus has the courage and knowledge to complete even the scariest tasks. He also shows courage on the island of Aeae when he comes across the enchantress, Circe. “Odysseus drew his sword and made a threatening gesture. Circe dropped to her knees and screamed.” (52). Odysseus went by himself to save his men in, Circe’s palace. Hermes (the messenger god) gives odysseus advice for facing, Circe, and has him eat a plant to make him immune to her spell. Going in, Odysseus didn’t know what would happen, but he wanted to save his men which makes him courageous. A last event that shows Odysseus’ courage is with Scylla and Charybdis. On page 58, Circe warns, Odysseus that he must sail close to Scylla’s rocks in order to avoid the rage of Charybdis and its raging whirlpool. Even though he knows Scylla will only have him lose six men, he still wants to try and lose none. These three events show that Odysseus showed courage and gained important knowledge in The Odyssey. Courage wasn’t just shown in the characters: Polyphemus, Circe, and Scylla; this concept also comes up in events throughout the poem. When Odysseus was gone a large group of suitors came to seduce, Penelope and try to become her new husband.
This is a big chain of events that shows courage and knowledge in the poem. When Odysseus first comes home he is disguised by, Athena to look like an old beggar. “‘Why are you bringing that detestable beggar to the palace? He will only disturb the feasting of the men there. And believe me, the Suitors will not stand for it.’” (64). When coming home, Odysseus knew that if he came in as himself he would scare the suitors off which would make it so he can’t punish them for the pain they’ve caused his wife. He was very smart to do this especially with what he had in mind. Penelope held a competition for the suitors to decide which one she would marry. The task was: The first man who could string Odysseus’ great bow and shoot an arrow through the rings in twelve axes placed in a row, would be Penelope’s new husband. “Without the slightest strain, Odysseus strung the bow and sent an arrow whizzing through the handle-rings of the twelve axes.” (69). This shows that, Odysseus has the strength and courage to be patient and prove them wrong and punish them for their crimes. This also makes his triumph clear that he survived a great ordeal. After Odysseus shoots the arrow through the axe handles he reveals himself to the suitors to fight them all. “Odysseus and his men stood over the heaped bodies of one hundred and eight slaughtered Suitors.” (70). After 20 years of traveling …show more content…
home to see his wife, Penelope, and his son, Telemachus; Odysseus was very patient to get his revenge. After such a long journey his courage and knowledge is evident in these three events of the poem, The Odyssey. Characters and events are good ways to show this courage and knowledge, but there are many symbols in this poem that show it as well. Odysseus has a scar on his thigh that has great importance.
When he was younger he visited his grandfather which is when this took place. “Odysseus was anxious to prove his bravery and skill, so he leaped ahead of the others to meet the beast. The boar drove straight at Odysseus and inflicted a severe wound on his thigh.” (2). Odysseus was named by his grandfather (Autolycus) with the meaning “‘he will be a man of much trouble, to himself and to his enemies.’” (1). Autolycus knew that his grandson would live a life like this. Because of this bold act done by, Odysseus, his family did praise him for it. “While they bandaged the wounded leg they admired and congratulated Odysseus on his valor or strength.” With Odysseus it is praised to be manly and strong. During this act Odysseus showed how courageous he is to protect his friends and kill a “beast.” Later in the poem once Odysseus comes home when he is disguised, his maid recognizes him. The maid named, Eurycleia remembered the scar from when he was a young boy, this made it possible for him to be exposed. “Eurycleia fetched and filled a basin and kneeled before Odysseus. She had just begun to wash when she noticed a strange scar on the stranger’s thigh. In wonder she stared at the man and knew him to be Odysseus.” This scar became a very important part of Odysseus’ life. Without the scar he wouldn’t have been recognized which could have affected his plan. Odysseus’ scar is a symbol in the Odyssey the represents courage and
knowledge shown by how he got it, how he was praised for it, and how he was recognized with it. Odysseus was away from home for a very long time, and on his trip he learned many things showing that courage is the greatest virtue when knowledge is gained. In life it is evident that someone works for what they need. In some cases these tasks drain a person of their strength and mental energy. The Google definition for courage is “the ability to do something that frightens one” or “strength in the face of pain or grief.” Odysseus continues to use his courage throughout the story while also gaining important knowledge. Odysseus also becomes wiser by the frightening experiences his journey brought him. Courage doesn’t just apply to heroes, or people doing heroic acts . Courage can be something that people do in their lives multiple times. When you face your fears you are being courageous; when you face your fears you are gaining knowledge.
Near the beginning of his journey, he met a Cyclops named Polyphemus. He killed & ate many of his men, so he had to stop him. He got him drunk with wine, and with an olive branch, along with his crew, “straight forward they sprinted, lifted it, & rammed deep in his crater eye.” (Pg 768: Lines 331-333) That was very brave, taking down a Cyclops. When Odysseus was disguised as a beggar, he asked the suitor Antinous for food, but denied his request & hit him with a stool. “The stool he let fly hit the man’s right shoulder on the packed muscle under the shoulder blade- like solid rock, for all the effect one saw.” (Pg. 808: Lines 1228-1230) Even after that, Odysseus remained calm & didn’t reveal his identity. He also fought al of the suitors & killed them all. He only had a few followers, and had to fight hundreds of men. His actions were very bold.
One of Odysseus’ traits is bravery. One example of Odysseus’ bravery is when he injures a Cyclops that is 5 times his size, “I drew it from the coals and my four fellows/ gave me a hand, lugging it near the Cyclops/ as more than natural force nerved them, straight forward they sprinted, lifted it, and rammed it/ deep in his crater eye. 329-332” This quote shows how brave Odysseus and his men are to face the Cyclops. Odysseus was intelligent to think about this idea, but he was brave for actually following through and doing it. Odysseus was also brave for fighting Penelope’s suitors even when he was outnumbered, “Now shrugging off his rags the wiliest fighter of the islands/ leapt and stood on the broad doorsill, his own bow in his hand/ he poured out at his feet a rain of arrows from the quiver/ and spoke to the c...
To be an epic hero one must portray qualities of bravery, strength, and intelligence. In addition, one must be able to lead others to victory. Odysseus portrays all of these qualities. He is brave and intelligent, this is proven when he tricked the Cyclops Polyphemus by telling Polyphemus his name was “Nohbdy”. This is said when Odysseus says “My name is Nohbdy: mother, father, and friends,/everyone calls me Nohbdy.’” (Homer 9. 274-275) In addition, later that night he disguised his men as sheep thus allowing them to escape because, Polyphemus accidentally unwittingly let the men out of his cave. The greatest example of Odysseus's physical strength came with the test of the suitors, crafted by Penelope. Odysseus was the only man strong enough to string the bow. After his identity was revealed, Odysseus slayed every man in the room. He is inarguably the strongest of all the men who want Penelope, not simply the
One of Odysseus's many qualities is determination. He remains determined throughout the entire saga to get back to his family. During Odysseus's Odyssey he encounters many obstacles, beast, god, and nature. Odysseus must get through all of these hardships before he can make it back to his family and home. On his way back Odysseus is next to Charybdis and she swallows his boat. He must holds on to the branches of a fig tree to survive, "But I clung grimly, thinking my mast and keel would come back to the surface when she spouted. And ah! How long, with what desiree, I waited! Till, at the twilight hour...the long poles at last reared from the sea"(12.560-64). Odysseus shows his determination to get home, because it would be easy for him to just let go and drown, but no Odysseus hangs on so he can see his wife again. Once he is at home he finds suitors at his house. Odysseus kills one of them and the others beg for mercy, ??Not for the whole treasure of your fathers, all you enjoy, lands, flocks, or any gold put up by others, would I hold my hand??(22.65-67). Odysseus is determined to get revenge on all of the suitors and he will not be satisfied until they are all dead. Without his strong will and determination Odysseus would not have made it through his trials. Although determination is a must for a journey such as Odysseus?s cunning is also just as essential.
In perspective one the dilemma is how versatile of a hero Odysseus really is. "In the Odyssey, we learn that Odysseus won the childhood scar that marks his thigh when, as a boy, he killed a ravaging boar" (Od. 19.392–468). This quote shows how bravery was shown at his younger age. It also is a very strong reason to believe that Odysseus will become a hero. Later in his life Odysseus was known for his way with words. "Though tempted by death during his years of wandering consistently tries to choose restraint and endurance" (Od. 10.49–55). This quote shows how mentally strong he was. In other tales of heroes there is many things that cause them to lose hope but they eventually gain it back. In the tale of Odysseus there is never a real point that Odysseus was mentally broke other then when he sees his mother in the land of the dead. After this part in the
The definition of pride is a feeling or deep pleasure of satisfaction that people obtain from their own accomplishments. Odysseus, the main character in The Odyssey, is full of pride throughout his long journey. Odysseus is a warrior from the ten year Trojan War and he is trying to get back home to Ithaca. He is one of the most popular war heros from his time. On his journey home over sea, the sea god and Odysseus’s enemy Poseidon, creates obstacles for Odysseus that he has to overcome if he wants to get home. Odysseus eventually returns home after another ten years. In the epic poem, The Odyssey, Homer represents pride Odysseus’ biggest flaw throughout his encounter with Polyphemus and the Phaeacians.
Throughout its history, strong values have stood at the core of Greek culture. Ancient Greeks placed a focus on a balance of mind and body. Citizens were expected to adhere to three main Greek virtues; these being respect for the body, respect for the gods, and hospitality. At times, these virtues were not upheld, usually resulting in what they believed to be punishment from the gods. Examples of this can be seen in the epic, The Odyssey, authored by Homer. Throughout the poem, a repeated disregard for the ancient Greek values teaches readers a fundamental principle of life--consequences follow poor decisions.
... in his heart pitied his sobbing wife; but his eyes stood fixed as horn or iron. Through craft he checked his tears" (187). Homer's use of epic simile in describing the tears Penelope shed enhances the reader's understanding of her sorrow. Odysseus longs to be embraced by his wife after twenty years of roaming. However, he knows that if he would reveal his true identity, he might jeopardize his carefully plotted revenge. One can see that even Odysseus' perseverance wavers when he encounters temptation to obtain what he longs for.
Odysseus faced many challenges and monsters along the way but one of the biggest challenges was when he returned home to his wife Penelope. She was testing Odysseus because he did not believe it was home that really came back. Penelope challenged Odysseus with a bow and arrow . But she said that there was a “ … have sawn that trunk and dragged the frame away” ( Homer 615 ). This is important because of the fact that in The Odyssey the whole story is based on the fact that. Odysseus is coming back home but since his wife does not believe it is him it has to prove to his wife that he came back .
The Odyssey is a tale that has changed literature and storytelling. In this tale Odysseus is a Soldier from the battle of Troy trying to get home to his island of Ithaca, where he is king. His wife and son must wait ten years while he is trying to make his way home. In Odysseus’s absence wooer’s, or better known as suitors, learn of his absence and travel to Ithaca to win his wife’s hand in marriage. These men come every day feasting on Odysseus’s food and wine, and give his servant’s orders. His son Telemachus, does his best to keep the suitors from ruining his fathers house but he is only a boy, and doesn’t receive the respect of an adult. Telemachus then has a visit from the god Athena, whom Odysseus is friends with, who advises him to travel to find out about his father. In his travels he hears that Odysseus may still be alive. Meanwhile Odysseus goes through a series of adventures and hardships that prove his wisdom. It is interesting in contrast of the Iliad, even though Achilles was much stronger and a better warrior, Odysseus was portrayed as a greater hero due to his wisdom. He uses this wisdom to escape from the Cyclops.
"Note the importance of signs in the works of Homer, such as the sign of the burning ship in the Iliad. Then there is a long flashback telling how Odysseus got the scar and the significance of it. The scar is symbolically important, for it defines who he is -- and what he is. The scar-flashback starts with the naming of Odysseus by his grandfather Autolykos, who was the world's greatest thief. There Autolykus says, since he has caused pain to people all over the world (the Greek verb odyussai) the boy will be called Odysseus. Odysseus is one who both gives pain and also suffers it. Then we get the long description of the hunt in which Odysseus gets the scar. This is a type of male initiation ritual, where the men of the family or tribe take the young man on an animal hunt so he can prove himself in the company of men. Such rituals often involve scarring or ritual mutilation, and here Odysseus achieves notable deeds by killing the fierce boar (giving pain) but also receiving pain and a scar as token of his accomplishments"(chss.montclair.edu/classics/ODYNOTES19TO24.HTML).
First of all, Odysseus is brave and courageous, giving him the initiative to fulfill his goals. One example is when Odysseus confronts Skylla. Odysseus purposely “made [his] way along to the foredeck—thinking to see her first from there” (Homer 217). If he was scared, he would have hidden underneath the deck. But instead, Odysseus goes out to face the beast. Odysseus knows that Skylla is immortal and cannot die, yet he is brave enough to confront her. Next, Odysseus fights the suitors, who are courting Penelope in his palace. The suitors greatly outnumber Odysseus, but Odysseus still chooses to fight even though the odds are against him and he is able to win. He stands up against those who do wrong. Having the courage to fight, Odysseus defeats the suitors and fulfills his goal of regaining his palace. If Odysseus was a coward and did not fight, then the suitors would have eventually won Penelope, resulting in Odysseus losing his palace and his wife. Many people have bravery and courage, but not many use it, as Odysseus does, to achieve their purpose.
Some will argues that perseverance does not always lead to a happy life because in order to persevere one must face difficult times; however, The Odyssey, written by Homer, reveals that when an individual perseveres, tasks are conquered. Odysseus and his men are finally in peace because the narrator points out that “Their singing dwindle[s] away” (758-759). In other words the sounds of the sirens diminish gradually until it was quiet. In every obstacle Odysseus faces, he always finds a way to fix the problem, or face it. Therefore, just because life throws
Homer’s The Odyssey is a Greek story that follows the journey of its primary character, Odysseus, back to his home in Ithaca after the Trojan War. Odysseus encounters many challenges in his journey home, from encounters with Polyphemus the Cyclops, the witch Circe and even the ghosts of dead Greeks. Meanwhile, his household in Ithaca is being threatened by suitors of his wife, Penelope, all wanting to inherit Odysseus’ possessions in the belief that he was already dead. Like many epic heroes, Odysseus possesses many admirable qualities. Three good characteristics of Odysseus are—cleverness, bravery and strength—here are some supporting instances from the epic that demonstrates Odysseus possession of such characteristics.
The challenges that Homer give the protagonist is all a test of character. Odysseus continues to pass the obstacles with flying colors, but his arrogance is the one flaw that is in dire need of correction. Some of the many challenges Odysseus overcomes on his voyage home is defeating the Cicones, surviving the Island of the Lotus Eaters, outsmarting the Giant Cyclops, saving his men from Circe, Traveling to Hades, passing between Scylla and Charybdis, escaping Calypsos’ Island and many more. Odysseus survives these obstacles and uses his smarts to escape near disaster. Often times he was the only one to survive these things and his crew often lost their lives due to their own stupidity. “‘We left the island and resumed our journey in a state of gloom; and the heart was taken out of my men by the wearisome rowing. But was our own stupidity that had deprived us of the wind.’”(P127 L75-79) Odysseus shows how he is an extraordinary man by being much smarter than his crew and the men that follow him. As a part of this stripping of Odysseus, Homer shows that Odysseus is a collective symbol of Everyman. On the one hand Odysseus is a great warrior, who is extremely intelligent, noble, and a great man. Although he has many god- like qualities he is still human. He shows that he is human and like every man, because of the fact that he still has major flaws. The
