The Great Gatsby is widely known and loved by many readers. This I partially believe is due to its ability to connect with our present society. One way it is able to do this is by portraying the different forms of carelessness humans tend to take on during everyday life. Almost every character mentioned is careless in some way whether it be major or minor, much like people in today's society. Some of these forms are minute and do not affect how the novel plays out very much if at all, and others are completely the opposite. Three of the most important characters in the novel are Gatsby, Tom, and Daisy. They all execute very crucial forms of carelessness. For instance when Daisy is giving birth to their first daughter she didn’t even know where Tom was as this quote from the novel shows, “Well, she was less than an hour old and Tom was God knows where.” (pg. 21). Two extremely arrogant and selfish forms of carelessness are executed by Myrtle, the first is that she dislikes her husband because he isn’t wealthy or as wealthy as she had thought prior to marrying him as this quote shows she is very careless about their relationship, “I thought he knew something about breeding but he wasn’t fit to lick my shoe.” (pg. 39). Another way is that she is having an affair with her devoted husband and does even think about it unless it’s in jest. Wilson her husband is careless in a much more violent manner, after Gatsby's car hits and kills Myrtle he goes after Gatsby and murders him without even thinking that it may have been someone else driving his car. Lastly all the people who attend Gatsby's parties are careless because they enjoy the things he gives them but in return all they do is fabricate crude rumors about how he acquired his wealth without even thinking about how they may affect
