Many people have their own definition of courage some may think of bravery, daring, determination and so many more synonyms, My word to describe courage would be boldness. In the Crucible the turn of events showed the characters true colors and their weaknesses, These two characters that will be desrcribed have showed boldness in a positive and negitive way.
To start off with we have Giles Corey, this witted old man was heroic and saved his wife (even though he accidentally got her on trial) “I will not give you no name. I mentioned my wife’s name once and I’ll burn in hell long enough for that. I stand mute” and by saying the two well known words "more weight" this was a big act of boldness which is pretty impressive of what honor he has for his wife. Another act Giles did, he accused one of the girls of "crying out" fibbing, the reason was that her

Elizabeth wasn’t going to take that so she stood up and said "the girl is murder! She must be ripped out of the world" This is so a big deal because abigail has been tearing people down and accusing them of witchcraft. So that does build up a lot of courage to stick up to your self. Lastly Hale was asking Elizabeth if she thinks witches were real or fiction and elizabeth said “If you believe I be secretly bound to Satan, then I must tell you, sir, I do not believe it” What she said was so risky like she couldve got blamed for what she said but no like she does Elizabeth stands up for her self . I think the Crucible showed how heroic some people can be even when faced with death and they defended there beliefs no matter what was going to happen to them. Giles and Abigail were two great examples of these type of people. Both their characters were severely tested and they stood with their own side instead of giving
In the Crucible there was three characters that stood out from all the other ones in this wicked story. Abigail Williams was a big influence in this story she would lie and lie to get out of things and she was also the leader of the girls in the woods. Furthermore she also had an affair with John Proctor which made John and Elizabeth relationship unstable. Also John Proctor runs into a situation at the end of the story where he is put in the position if he wants his pride of not signing that paper full of lies or die knowing he did the right thing of not lying. Additionally, Elizabeth Proctor has never lied ever until the day John was being prosecuted for his witchcraft and possibly adultery and Elizabeth lied so that his name wouldn't be ruined.
Based on the Merriam Webster dictionary, courage is defined as the,“mental or moral strength to venture, persevere, and withstand danger, fear, or difficulty.” In the play, the characters are tested and forced to make life or death decisions, with
Elizabeth lets her husband decided to live or die, which shows great courage and strength. Abigail shows determination to get what she wants. She is able to manipulate the townspeople and she can accuse them of witchcraft, which enables her to get revenge on the people that have done her wrong. Both Elizabeth and Abigail can be portrayed at strong female characters in 'The Crucible' by the actions that occur in the play. Work Cited: Miller, Arthur.
Great events, whether they are beneficial or tragic ones, bring change in a person. These scenarios can give one an entirely new perspective on life, and turn around his way of thinking. Events such as the Salem Witch Trials show the people involved what they could not see before. In Arthur Miller's The Crucible, Elizabeth Proctor, Reverend Hale, and John Proctor gain valuable insight into themselves, as well as others.
“Courage - a perfect sensibility of the measure of danger, and a mental willingness to endure it.” Courageous people understand the danger that they face when they act how they do. That is what courage is all about. Many historical events occur due to people having the courage to do what they think is right, or because of those who use their courage to do what they want. Having the courage to stand alone in one’s beliefs may be one of the hardest thing a person can do.
In the Crucible, the accused were unfairly tried and convicted on limited evidence or even word of mouth from the girls.
Courage can be described as the ability to do something fearful or going against the majority. Abraham Lincoln showed courage throughout his presidency. Lincoln was famous for standing up for people who were repressed; “It took courage to stand up for what he believed in, and make no mistake that what he believed was on target
The crucible showed that John is a very courageous and strong man that having been accused with witchcraft that he continued to fight for the right cause and having so much weight and pressure on his shoulders from hurting his wife hand finally been lifted up after giving up his life and showing his wife he would die for her life to make her and there children happy and have a life at ease.
In the crucible characters are motivated by various themes such as, reputation, power, witchcraft and society. John Proctor, Reverend Hale and Reverend Parris’s actions are prime examples of how in the crucible these themes are dominant.
Overall, in the Crucible, many people become prosperous in the domination of power in the population. Characters, such as Abigail and Danforth, drill fear in people’s minds whether it be through threats, blackmailing or even fraud. Deceiving people take advantage of their own authority to rule the majority. As a result, the innocent became victims subjected to their own death. The Crucible shows that anyone can become mighty if they have the true desire
Vengeance is the main theme of The Crucible. The people of the town of Salem were not united, but instead, distrusted and disliked each other. During the court trials, the girls started accusing certain people that they didn't like of dealing with witchcraft. For example, Abigail Williams couldn't forget John Proctor even though their affair was over. She believed that if his wife, Elizabeth Proctor, was out of the way, Abigail and John would be together again. Therefore, she told everyone that Elizabeth's spirit was trying to kill her and accused Elizabeth of being a witch.
Death, destruction, lies, Betrayal, lust, and tragic heroes are all things found in great novels and plays, and The Crucible fits all of these characteristics. People would like to disagree, saying that there was no tragic hero in Salem Village, but I am not one of those people. In Arthur Miller’s The Crucible John Proctor, an innate leader moves from being a well thought of man in his village to being thought of, and hanged for, being the devil's follower. I am going to prove this in 3 paragraphs Hubris and Nemesis, Anagnorisis, and Hamartia and Catharsis.
One of the most important things that affect the crucible was fear. Most of the problems and situations were caused due to people and their fears. An example of this is how people were getting caught out of trouble. This is something that happened in both the and in America during Arthur Miller's time. One thong that helped contribute to the fear was the power people have. For example the power people in the crucible were the priest and the judges. These people used their reputation and power to strike fear into the people which made them act the way they
“It takes strength and courage to admit the truth.” In the play, The Crucible by Arthur Miller many characters are forced to make life threatening decisions to either lie or tell the truth. These choices signify the characters that a character has integrity by telling the truth or the lack of it by telling a lie. Some might say the play The Crucible by Arthur Miller deals primarily with human weakness; however, the truly dominant subject is clearly courage because of the characters John Proctor, Elizabeth Proctor, and Giles Corey.
As a person walks the journey of life through the peaceful valleys and momentous mountains, there are many character traits that will help him on his way. One of the greatest character traits to help him on his journey, is the trait of courage. Courage is the fortitude and stamina that a person has to overcome difficult circumstances. Courage helps a person to face even the toughest trials in life. Beowulf, from Beowulf translated by Charles W. Kennedy, shows great courage through his trials as he fights battles with ferocious creatures and explores deep under water caverns.
