Bilbo's transformation from a timid hobbit to a brave adventurer is the central theme of The Hobbit and is portrayed through his journey, the challenges he faces, and the growth of his character. In The Hobbit by J.R.R. Tolkien. A story about home-loving Bilbo Baggins, the hobbit of the title, who joins the wizard Gandalf and the thirteen dwarves of Thorin's Company, on a quest to reclaim the dwarves' home and treasure from the dragon Smaug. Tolkien shows how unknown adventures can transform fear into bravery. Bilbo begins the journey with the dwarves. He feels very scared and timid on this journey. However, through the challenges he faced many troubles, but little did he know these challenges actually made Bilbo a stronger hobbit and began to face his fears. One challenge was when Bilbo was faced with many big spiders when the group found themselves off course. Bilbo had to build up courage to kill the spiders to save the Dwarves. “Bilbo felt a different person, and much fiercer and bolder in spite of an empty stomach, as he wiped his sword on the grass and put it back into the sheath” (Tolkien 144). …show more content…

We see Bilbo's bravery start to shine through. He faces many challenges of facing trolls, spiders and goblins. Bilbo begins to show courage in unexpected ways. One moment is when he decides to spare Gollum's life and outsmart him in a game of riddles. Showing compassion and quick thinking. “Already he was a different hobbit from the one that had run out without a pocket-handkerchief from Bag-End long ago” (Tolkien 196). This shows how in the beginning of the adventure he was a very timid hobbit and was reluctant to leave for the adventure but after the adventure he returned a much braver
