Macbeth's major flaw in his ambition, is that only near the end does he realize enough is enough. “...Either Macbeth falls very quickly into the suggestive net that the Weird Sisters have begun to thread, or that his prior thoughts of killing Duncan and taking the throne have reemerged after the battle”(H.R Coursen 31). Macbeth believes that it is Lady Macbeth who awakens his ambition for the crown, but it is possible that these thoughts already existed. Macbeth has respect for Duncan, even referring to him as “cousin,” yet it becomes clear that he is infatuated with the power of kingship. Time is up for Macbeth, his ambition has led to the death of his wife, Malcolm will soon be king, and he shall die. All his hopes and dreams of power are short lived, and now he stands mourning his wife and the the decisions he has made. Macbeth neglects Lady Macbeth throughout the play, because she so often distanced herself from him. Macbeth is given the impression that Lady Macbeth does not feel the same agony that she feels, distancing himself from her. When he learns of her death by possible suicide, he loses the purpose that gave him initiative. What was his ambition without the woman who pushed him forward, even when she was suffering just the same? The speech has a wistful tone because of Macbeth's longing for a reversal of fate.
