In the short story, The Masque of the Red Death, Edgar Allen Poe tells a dark tale of a prince and his masquerade of death. In the story the prince, Prince Prospero, holds a luxurious ball at his enclosed castle ending in the demise of him and the attendees. Though the prince is a powerful and wealthy noble that seems to be fortified from any danger, he cannot escape the inevitability of his death. Throughout The Masque of the Red Death, Edgar Allan Poe uses literary techniques such as symbolism, allegory, and alliteration to develop a theme of power, that death is more powerful than any human can be.
Poe demonstrates a very obvious use of symbolism to illustrate the theme of death’s power over the characters in the story. One of the many

symbols used in the story is the clock. The clock struck every hour silencing the musicians and company of the prince, striking fear into their hearts. The clock basically represents their lives. The death of the joyful masqueraders was matched with the death of the clock as it “went out with that of the last of the gay” (Poe). This gives us the impression that death has the power and control over the characters. Death got to choose the “time” in which it took their lives. Another symbol in the story is the black chamber. The room represents the fear of death that the people have. None of them dare to go into room because of their fear. In essence fear is power. If you are afraid of something, it has power over you, and that’s exactly what the symbolism in The Masque of The Read Death tells us about the characters in the story, that they fear death. The Masque of the Read Death serves as an allegory to demonstrate the theme of the power of death.
A more specific category of symbolism, and one of the many things Poe is known for, an allegory is used to symbolize a deeper moral of the story, which in this story is the power and inevitability of death. What gives away that this short story is an allegory is the first paragraph that Poe writes about the “Red Death”. This fictitious disease represents something more realistic and important to Poe. It represents tuberculosis and how it took the life of several women in his life. With this story about this “Red Death”, writing it as allegory helps him express how death has had a powerful influence over his life. Another symbol he uses for allegory is the masked visitor as he represents just how powerful death really is. Poe personifies death by making death into one of the characters of the story. The masked figure, an unwanted being that somehow got past of the “security” of the prince’s palace, after being uncloaked by the attendants of the masquerade, was “untenanted by any tangible form… and now was acknowledged the presence of the Red Death” (Poe). This use of allegory gives us that deeper moral that death can be anywhere, in this case in the form of a human, which adds to its powerful
presence. Though very subtle, Poe uses alliteration to strengthen this theme of power. At the first sight of the princes name it makes the prince seem as someone with a powerful stature. The alliteration in his name “Prince Prospero” really helps with this effect. Authors usually will use alliteration in a character’s name to make them seem more important. Heroes and villains will be given alliterative names to show that they have power behind their image. Poe does the same with illuminating Prince Prospero’s name using alliteration. Another example of alliteration that Poe uses to show power is when describing the masked visitor. He describes the scary image of the visitor’s attire which was immersed “in blood—and his broad brow… besprinkled with the scarlet horror” (Poe). Poe makes it seem as if he is really trying to make this sentence stand out. With the use of the hyphen, the use of alliteration really strengthens the sentence and makes it stick. Poe must have done this put an image in the reader’s head on how frightening this figure really was. This creates a great indicator of the power of fear that death held over the prince and his the rest of the revelers. Knowing that Poe has a background in poetry, the use of alliteration seems something purposely done and buffs the theme.
Edgar Allan Poe's writing style is based on the supernatural and the unknown. In The Masque of the Red Death, Prince Prospero invites the revelers to come to the castle to party until the danger of pestilence is gone. The party was interrupted by an intruder who was dressed in all black (like the Grim Reaper) and was associated with the plague of the "red death." The reaper killed everyone one by one in the end. The Masque of the Red Death is an allegory. An allegory is symbols that are presented in the story that have two levels of meaning. An example can be the clock in the story. The clock told time and represented the time they had left before they died. There were seven chambers that were different colors, and the last chamber was black, which was the last chamber that represented death. I think the seven rooms symbolized the days until you die and the clock symbolized the time until you died.
All people wish to avoid suffering, and those with wealth usually take too long to realize that they cannot avert it. In the short story, “The Masque of the Red Death”, Edgar Allan Poe tells the readers of death, and how the upper class deals with it. In this story, Prince Prospero and his wealthy friends hide away in a castle to evade death. This obviously does not work, as death is inevitable, but of course, they attempt to save themselves anyways. In “The Masque of the Red Death”, Poe uses the courtiers, Prince Prospero, and the stranger to symbolize the members of the influential upper class and their habit of using their power to postpone their own impending doom.
the countenances of those who enter it that there are few…bold enough to set foot within it".
In many stories, authors use symbolism, which is using symbols to represent something, to show a moral. “The Masque of the Red Death,” is a fictionalized story about a deadly disease that pervades through a country, killing many people. A young prince, in an effort to save himself and his elite friends and family, he withholds them all in his grand castle. The castle is unique in that it has seven very distinct rooms, that all seem to represent something important. In the short story “The Masque of the Red Death” by Edgar Allan Poe, the seven colored chambers symbolize the cycle of human life, from birth to death.
Firstly, The Masque of the Red Death is a short story that dwells on a wide variety of societal issues. On the other hand, The Raven adopts the form of a poem, which is especially notable for its dramatic and melodic properties. The poet uses the refrain of “Lenore” and “nevermore” in order to emphasize the narrators’ troubled interaction with death (Poe, The Works of Edgar Allen Poe). Furthermore, The Raven employs allusion in its attempt to explain the mysteries surrounding death. The poet seeks to know whether there is “balm in Gilead” in reference to the hope of life after death demonstrated in various religious faiths such as Christianity. In The Masque of the Red Death the author addresses death’s inevitability and its wider implication on the society (Poe). The short story addresses the ability of epidemics to wreck havoc on populations. Furthermore, the short story addresses the authority’s selfishness and incompetence when it comes to addressing pivotal issues affecting people. Instead of finding ways of protecting people from further infections, the prince selfishly runs away from the rest of the population. Whereas death finally catches up with everybody regardless of one’s social status, the short story plays a pivotal role in highlighting leadership discrepancies that plague many civilized
In “The Masque of the Red Death,” Edgar Allan Poe uses imagery, sensory detail and symbolism not only to build suspense, but also to convey the idea that an individual can not hide or run away from death which becomes closer as time passes on. Throughout the story Poe uses imagery details to create suspense in the story. For example when the author is describing the disease that has taken many lives he describes the unfortunate event as, “ Blood was its Avator and its seal- the redness and the horror of blood. One can understand that in the story the tragic death of someone might occur as tragically as the disease is described. Accordingly, as the story progresses the deep shade of the color red is evident in many areas to represent symbolism.
In the story “The Masque of the Red Death” the title slightly reveals the story. The story is about a fatal disease known as “The Red Death” and Prospero not caring about and dies. Poe writes this story in third person .Prince Prospero knew about the people dying from the disease but he paid it no attention. So one day Prospero decides to throw a masquerade ball. In the ball there are seven rooms. The seven rooms are different colors such as blue, purple, green, orange, white, violet, and black. While people are in enjoying the ball, midnight strikes and everyone silently fall to their deaths. Prospero see that everyone is dead and becomes frightened. Prospero runs in a rage and The Red Death catches him and Prospero dies.
In the "Masque of the Red Death," the first sentence, "The Red Death had long devastated the country," sets the tone for the whole story. Poe describes the horrors of the disease, stressing the redness of the blood and the scarlet stains. The disease kills so quickly that one can die within thirty minutes of being infected with the disease. To create a frightening effect of the revulsion of this disease, Poe uses words such as "devastated," "fatal," "horror of blood," and "sharp pains and profuse bleeding." In summary, the story relates the prince, trying to be safe and away from the horrible death, invites a thousand friends to be in seclusion in his abbey away from the disease. During a celebration , a masked ball at the abbey - with incredible described rooms and moods - a surprise masked intruder causes death to all.
Edgar Allen Poe, in the short story “The Masque of the Red Death”, shows how people may try to outsmart death and surpass it, but in the end they will die since death is inevitable. He reveals this in the book by showing all the people closed up in the abbey that belongs to Prince Prospero. They are trying to escape the “Red Death” and think that they can escape the death by hiding away in the abbey. They manage to stay safe for six months but in the end they all die after the stroke of midnight during the masquerade ball Prince Prospero puts on from the Red Death itself which appears after midnight and leaves no survivors in the end. Poe develops the theme of how no one can escape death through the use of the point of view, the setting, and symbolism.
In the short story “ The Masque of the Red Death,” Edgar Allen Poe uses symbolism to express ideas to develop his theme and characters. “ The Masque of the Red Death” tells a story of prince Prospero who locks his friends and himself in a castle to escape the Red Death, a deadly disease. Much to Prospero’s dismay, in the end, the deadly disease causes them to perish. Poe uses the dark room to reveal Prospero’s unusual character and reveal that death is always there and cannot be avoided.
Poe also used his words kill as a magician to build the bloody imageries to make the audience feel reliable to his purpose. First he describe the terrible of Red Death, "There were sharp pains, and sudden dizziness, and then profuse bleeding at the pores, with dissolution. The scarlet stains upon the body and especially upon the face of the victim, were the pest ban which shut him out from the sympathy of his fellow men’’(Poe 43). It was a bloody scene , Poe portrayed the death scene horrorly to make the death in this story became more scary. Then Poe described Prince turn to died ‘’The figure was tall and gaunt, and shrouded from head to foot in the habilments of the grave...His vesture was dabed in blood and his broad brow, with all the features of the face was besprinkled with the scarlet horror’’( Poe 46). He performed the death of Prince is more horrible than everybody to get a strong conforment. Although The prince do everything to avoid the death but he still died. Not only sight, He was using hearing imagery too ”it's a pendulum swung and fro with a heavy monotonous clang; it came from the brazen lungs of the sound which was clear and loud
"The prince had provided all the appliances of pleasure. There were buffoons, there were improvisatori, there were ballet-dancers, there were musicians, there was Beauty, there was wine. All these and security were within. Without was the 'Red Death,'" (209). As Edgar Allen Poe set the scene for his story, he also created an ominous mood and a sense of suspense supported by the setting. He details the fun and amusement inside the prince's abbey, in contrast to the horror and doom outside, and the reader's curiosity is piqued, because such bliss cannot be maintained for long. Throughout the story Poe explicates and changes elaborate environments to build the suspenseful energy and create a strong structure. In "The Masque of the Red Death," setting is employed to organize motives and action, and to focus the reader on the climax. Poe targets the culminating point of his story using rich descriptions of the abbey, the masquerade, and the clock.
In the story, “Masque of the Red Death” it covers six months during the Red Death. It takes place in a castle which has seven different colored rooms. In the beginning of the story it describes the main character prince Prospero as happy, fearless and wise. Towards the end of the story a new guest appears to the party and everyone is scared and Prospero goes from being happy to mad and in the end the new guest kills Prospero and everyone dies because he was the Red Death. used to symbolize death. Poe's use of language and symbolism is shown in his description of the
Many authors often use symbolism to express a deeper meaning. They use the symbols to connect an unrelated thought or feeling into their literary work they are writing. Edgar Allan Poe frequently uses this literary device in his works. Symbols are many times seen in his poems and in his short stories. Many symbols are evident in Poe’s works “The Raven,” “The Tell-Tale Heart,” and “The Black Cat.” Because Poe’s works are typically dark, his use of symbols is in a dark way. Although there are many types of symbols manifested in these stories, Poe’s works generally include a symbol that eludes death or the end of something and many include references of sight and vision.
