This summer, I spent five life changing weeks in Quebec City with the Explore Program. I stayed on campus at Université Laval, attended french classes each weekday, and explored Quebec City in my spare time. For the entire five weeks, I was to speak nothing but french in order to immerse myself in the language. At first, it was intimidating being in a completely different environment from my home and speaking a language I barely knew, but the experience turned out to be amazing. I used to be a very shy person, avoiding anything I was not entirely comfortable with, and I was a little worried about going off to university. But this program has taught me to embrace new experiences and challenges because the outcome is feeling self fulfilled in the end. I now cannot wait to go to university and live on my own, take care of myself, and be surrounded with new people because I know that living on my own is fun, taking care of myself is simply life, and new people are friendship …show more content…
Since I can remember, I have been overweight; however, it was not until I became 250 pounds that I decided to change my habits and better my health. I began this path by joining my school’s cross country team last fall. Practice was six days a week, two hours per practice, and I attended all of them. I may not have been able to run as fast as the other runners; however, I worked my butt off. By the end of the season, I was running up to six kilometers and received the spirit of the sport award. From cross country, I experienced the benefits of daily exercise and now work to maintain this drive. I decided to cut fast food and unnecessary junk food from my menu. I realized that eating healthy does not mean eating gross food; some of the tastiest foods are the healthiest. I feel so much more energetic and strong now that I have been on this pathway to losing weight and becoming healthy. My goal is 130 pounds and, although I am not there yet, I am on my
There were times in which I did not want to go to school, times I did not want to face humiliation, time I hated everyone around even myself, However, as time passed, I soon discovered that there wasn 't a better place I could have moved to. In America, My journey across the dark tunnel has taught me a priceless lesson: "Confidence is the result of hours and days and weeks and years of constant work and dedication." I have used this lesson in my adapting to a new environment as different as the USA. In my past 3 years in high school, I’ve learned a very important lesson: never let your background, your mistakes, or your fears stop you from becoming the person that you want to be. I know that everyone here, with me today, has the potential to do something great. In conclusion, I want to say to all of you please do not walk away from your difficult time or do not hide from your reality, just go with the flow and as the time passes, you will be able to get out of your difficult time and you will be able to identify yourself as I did. While, facing the reality you have to go through many difficult situations, but you should not give up and just move on. Living in such a completely different environment is the biggest challenge of my life. Honestly, I really enjoy the beautiful and quiet environment here. All that I am today is what I have learned after moving here. Every experience I have had has been valuable. Every person I have met has helped me grow. Every failure I have had has been but a pit stop on the way to bigger
Nutrition and physical activity are important aspects as they improve health and reduce chronic diseases. In June of this year my family physician placed me on a doctor assisted weight loss program that enabled me to eat my favorite foods but in appropriate proportions and in heathier ways. The best part about Supertracker is that it gives me wonderful tools to support me in understanding and meeting my goals. Once I created a profile through Supertracker I was provided a personal plan to follow including the amount of grains, vegetables, fruits, and protein I needed to be successful. For three consecutive days, I entered my food and activity intake into Supertracker and was able to analyze the excesses and deficiencies
Proper nutrition is important in maintaining a long and healthy life. Most Americans are rushed due to their busy work schedules, and do not take the time to plan their diets properly. Like me, most Americans are unaware of the importance of eating a healthy diet and consume too many foods without the proper nutrients. Throughout my life I have been fortunate. I have not had any major health problems, and have been able to consume most foods without having to worry about gaining weight. These last two years, however, I started to gain weight and have become concerned with my diet. Changing my poor eating habits has been difficult for me, however, having this assignment has taught me that it is not as difficult as I previously imagined.
I’ve heard it all before from family and friends, “Martha, you should stop eating this or doing that”. I knew they only meant the best seeing how my blood pressure was through the roof and my ankles and knees were constantly sore. But it was still infuriating how others would make it seem like it was just so simple for me to change the lifestyle I’ve had for the past 35 years. The stress and weight piled up quickly after my messy divorce. I hit rock bottom and didn’t care much about my weight or eating habits that shaped my 5’5” 350 pound frame. However, everything changed after taking my 6 year old daughter to the fair on a Saturday morning about 2 years ago.
Diet is possibly one of the hardest things for people, including myself, to control. Every corner you turn while driving down the street has a different fast food restaurant to tempt you. Even if you avoid the temptation and make it to the store, then every corner you turn offers a new food that is filled with sodium and unnatural materials. My current diet is pretty much opposite of most recommendations. The few things that I normally would fall in line with, in terms of a healthy diet, are eating lean meats, poultry, and eggs along with low-fat/fat-free milk products. I lack many fruits, vegetables, and low sodium foods in my diet. Ellis (p. 322) states, “How you eat can matter more than what you eat. If you want to eat less, then eat slowly. Savor each bite. Stop when you’re satisfied instead of when you feel full.” These are strong words that stand out to me because every day it seems like I eat more than I should and I eat it fast. With that being said, my action plan will be to incorporate the beneficial items I am ...
Growing up as an only child I made out pretty well. You almost can’t help but be spoiled by your parents in some way. And I must admit that I enjoyed it; my own room, T.V., computer, stereo, all the material possessions that I had. But there was one event in my life that would change the way that I looked at these things and realized that you can’t take these things for granted and that’s not what life is about.
The Rio Grande Valley (RGV) usually ranks among the top ten fattest cities in the United States. Because of the obesity concern in the RGV, I decided to change my eating habits at a young age. Unfortunately, my lack of nutrition knowledge and professional guidance led to a severe illness and several hospitalizations. Throughout my illness, I consulted with several professionals who taught me about healthy eating habits, mindset, and lifestyle. Being able to grow in a community with a high rate of obesity, yet also understanding malnutrition from personal experience helped me to understand and learn about nutrition on both extremes of the spectrum. Although my actions at a young age led to disabilities I currently struggle with, I developed
...e completely healthy attempting to avoid my punishment and then there were days where I ultimately caved and failed at eating well. On those days, I followed the rules I set in place and worked out as I said I would that evening. Part of the time my boyfriend would inevitably cause me to falter by cooking a nice fattening meal, but I don’t blame him at all considering it was up to me to make the decision to refrain from eating it. I probably didn’t do as well as I could have around lunch time or dinner but I’m glad at the fact that I did keep away from sweets and snacks throughout the entire week. I was really intrigued with getting good results for this project so I tried my hardest to actually follow the program set. Even if I don’t keep with this change after the project it’s very comforting to know I CAN eat healthy when I want and I CAN workout if I need too.
A sad fact in American society is that thousands of people search for the elusive dream of being thin. On any given day, one finds neighbors, friends, and relatives on some kind of diet. Dieters assume various disguises, but the noteworthy ones are the "bandwagoneer," the "promiser" and the "lethal loser."
Eating is important to survival of humans. Humans need to consume food on a daily bases to intake protein, sodium, vitamins, etc. Over the years since the 20th century the rate of obesity has grown and is still growing, it is a problem in the US. Many people like me overeat and eat the wrong stuff and don’t workout to burn all those calories. The amount I eat is what I hate about myself so much because all that I eat goes in my body and stores the food as fat which grows on my body and I don’t feel or look good. This is why I chose to change this part of my lifestyle, I need to change myself for the better.
My measurable, specific and realistic goal for this quarter is to exercise at least 10 hours a week by weightlifting, running, and swimming for the next 10 weeks. To be able to do that, I would need to have positive reinforcement to keep me going, help give me that little push that I need every day. One positive reinforcement that I absolutely love to use is food. After a hard day of working out, I buy myself something nice to eat, like good pizza or burritos. This way I become more likely to work out knowing that I will get something doo to eat after. I like to believe that food is my number 1 enforcer. It will always be there when I need it, it satisfies me tremendously, and overall it is just ridiculously reinforcing. As a result I try to
Living a healthy lifestyle is a melting pot of several factors. One is not able to live a healthy lifestyle without a solid diet and workout foundation. The harmful side effects of processed food, drugs, alcohol, and sleep deprivation trump one’s life while mental and emotional stability aids in a healthy lifestyle. According to Jillian Michaels, “The right diet will regulate your blood sugar, balance your hormones, and maximize your energy, all of which promote optimal fat burning and muscle development.” None the less, one must form a platform based on healthy morals and principles in order to live life to its fullest potential.

This assessment project has been very beneficial to achieving and living a healthier lifestyle. This project allowed me to gain valuable insight to what I consume and how it affects my body. One thing I never really worried about throughout my life is my diet. Every since I was young I’ve always had a rather fast metabolism. Many people would consider me to be fortunate because it’s a blessing to have, but however I feel like it’s also been seen as a curse. Throughout my life gaining weight was a difficult challenge. I would have to consume about 6-8,00 calories daily just to maintain weight. No matter what I did I could never gain weight. This is until I was in the Marines. It was physically and mentally demanding. In addition to that with the help of my fellow Marines in weightlifting I went from being a scrawny 125lbs kid at age of 18 to a more solid 190lbs at the age of 23. It took a lot
While I was tracking my eating for these three days, I began to learn about the benefits of the food that I am eating and the nourishment that they provide for my body. I had never realized how big of a role that the food that I eat plays in my everyday life. Eating has never been something that I really think about it is just something that I do. After I looking at the data of what I eat on Choose My Plate, I realized that my eating habits are far from balanced and that I needed to work on bringing my eating habits to a better balance. While there are a lot of things that I have been doing right, there are also many things that I can work on.
