Synopsis: On 10/17/16 at approximately 2235 hrs, I made contact with victim Lizenid Medina, who advised a known suspect threw a brick through her right screen patio door. Medina advised she was not a home during the time of the incident. Forensics was called at and took photographs of the scene and took the brick to forensics for DNA. VRB was issued to Medina On 10/17/2016 at approximately 2225 hrs, I was dispatched to 6698 47th St N, in reference to vandalism. Upon arrival, I made contact with the complainant Lizenid Medina. While conducting my investigation a K-9 unit was on patrol attempting to track the suspect but was unable to locate him. Medina advised an individual name Tim, witness a short stocky Hispanic male running from their residence towards Racetrack on 49th Street. At this time I was unable to make contact with Tim and gather further information on the suspect. Medina stated she suspects it was her mother’s ex-boyfriend Ulysses Hernandez. Medina explained that ever since her mother and Hernandez broke up, he started harassing the family slashing their tires and keying their vehicles. See case # 16-71752 for further information. Medina also stated the brick that is inside matches, the bricks at the residence of 5973 McKee Lake Dr. N. She explained Hernandez use to live there and he use the same bricks to build a fireplace. Prior to walking towards the back of the patio, I called PCSO forensics to take pictures of the scene and to get a DNA swab from the brick. When I got to the back of the patio I observed the right patio door glass was shattered. There was shattered glass in the inside and the outside of the residence. On March 24, 2016, officers were dispatched to a scene where a male subject was trying to gain entry into a vehicle using a hammer. Upon arrival officers made contact with a male subject who was later identified as Keith Hunt, the defendant, and the victim. The victim explained to the officers she was standing near the trunk of her vehicle when Mr. Hunt approached, He attempted to keep into her vehicle without permission; so she confronted the defendant and tried to secure her vehicle. Mr. Hunt demanded she give him the keys and her wallet. The victim stated the defendant had a hammer in his hand and was threatening her with it while he was telling her to hand over the property. On Thanksgiving evening, November 27, 1992, Sergeant Kenneth Mathison and his wife Yvonne drive their 1988 tan Ford van along Route 131 in Hilo, Hawaii. Mathison, a sergeant of 25 years with the Hilo Police Department was allegedly informing his wife, a maternity nursing professional at the Hilo Medical Center, that he was being investigated in his second paternity suit. The evidence against Timothy McVeigh in the Oklahoma City bombing was overwhelming specifically the forensic evidence. Forensic investigators recovered McVeigh’s fingerprint from a receipt for two thousand pounds of a basic explosive ingredient called ammonium nitrate (Saferstein, 2015). Furthermore, investigators located PETN residue on the clothes McVeigh was wearing on the day of the bombing, and PETN is a component of detonating cord (Saferstein, 2015). Crime scenes are known to have many clues left behind. The obvious would be a the body or bodies, clothing, and sometimes even the murder weapon. While these are great way to solve a case there's another kind of evidence; trace evidence. Trace evidence are small pieces of evidence that are laying around a crime scene. There are many types of trace evidence some of them include metal filings, plastic fragments, gunshot residue, glass fragments, feathers, food stains, building materials, lubricants, fingernail scrapings, pollens and spores, cosmetics, chemicals, paper fibers and sawdust, human and animal hairs, plant and vegetable fibers, blood and other body fluids, asphalt or tar, vegetable fats and oils, dusts and other airborne particles, insulation, textile fibers, soot, soils and mineral grains, and explosive residues. Although these are the most common found elements, they are not the only ones. The Trace Evidence Unit is known to examine the largest variety of evidence types and used the biggest range of analytical methods of any unit. materials are compared with standards or knowns samples to determine whether or not they share any common characteristics. In this paper I will discuss the different kinds of trace evidence and how crime scene investigaros use it to solve cases and convict criminal.

Victim Brian Haddock is found to be dead for last 12 hours in a house under construction. The first thing that came under the consideration for the investigators was blood, which was splatter all over the 3 sides of wall. The investigator founds a piece of red colored cloth alongside bloody shoes print on the floor. As the murder was done with the help of some kind of heavy constructing instrument, hammer of every worker at the site was examined. Eventually blood was found on the hammer of one of the worker, but his little sister, was linked with the case as a snuffer dog took investigators to a trash cane where they found a sweater (piece found at the crime scene) & a bill. Forensic science has been in practice for centuries; the first textbook on forensic science was printed in China during the 1200's; in the early 1800's, a technique was developed the first test to identify arsenic in the blood stream; the early 1900's lead to the development of using fingerprinting to identify victims and suspects. While these discoveries where important in criminal investigation, they were only the beginning. Only recently has forensic science significantly refined its techniques and accuracy. Today scientists can locate, identify and trace the tiniest of particles, and identify victims and suspects, beyond a reasonable doubt through DNA analysis. This evolution in forensic science is a prosecutor's dream; while a defense attorney's nightmare. Forensic science has made great strides.
