The first day we got to know each other. We did a few different interest survey. Mark is a fifteen years old student at Zanesville High School. He has four older brothers and one older sister. His hobbies include sports, video games, sleep, and watching the walking dead. His favorite sport is football. When asked will he go out for the team he said no. he said, “I just enjoy playing with me friends in my backyard”. I redirected from friendly questions and moved on to academics questions. I had him feel out a survey about reading. His favorite types of books are about ghost and zombies. It was interesting to me that he did not read on his own. made all that interesting was when he answered questions about comprehension. He did not enjoy comprehension. He did not like when the teacher called on him to answer questions about what he or someone else read. Our class just discussed explicit, sustained comprehension instruction in class. So looking back on it I wonder what his experiences in his education process were. Did he have any practices with comprehension? I talked with his teacher. I asked her what reading level do you think he is on. She told me he might be on a fifth grade. She said he is the highest level in the class and that’s why she had him participate in my testing and strategies.
My reading experience in junior-high and first three years of high school were not so much different. I had never been enthusiastic to read about predetermined topics assigned by my teacher and they continued to assign predetermined reading topics that made me feel frustrated and at times uncomfortable. But there was positivity that came out of these repulsive and devastating books, such as Lord of The Flies by William Golding or The Night by Elie Wiesel. With such high numbers of adolescents falling below basic in reading, illiteracy is a battle that must be fought head on. The largest dilemma with the struggle is the number of variations that cause adolescents to become reluctant, unmotivated or struggling readers. Fortunately, a large number of strategies exist to encourage and strengthen readers of all ages, proving that adolescence is not a time to give up on faltering students. Rather, it is a time to evaluate and intervene in an effort to turn a reluctant reader into an avid one (or near enough). Ultimately, educators must learn to properly assess a student’s strengths and weaknesses (Curtis, 2009) and pair them with the proper intervention techniques. If one method does not work, countless others exist to take its place.
Over the course of the 21st century, there has been a steady decline in the rate of high school graduates. With such an important factor to the success of adolescents, school administrations have begun to take notice of such unacceptable findings. In this process they have attempted to understand the needs of our youth and the methods that give them the opportunity to become better readers, writers and overall students. To these young individuals, these years of development are pivotal to there success as adults. Like Rose I was also placed into classes that didn 't help me out in any other way. Classes like ELL (English language learning) and some require course like art, and some repeat classes from middle school like us history. I like history, but I don 't like classes that teaches the same subject over again. I don 't dislike ELL, but feel like it limited student ability to be creative. Having to be taught boring diction and punctuation over and over again from one ELL class to another. The classes I was put in didn 't engaged me. up till high school where I could partially take any class I want, but still was forced into an art class for two school years. Aidan is a very energetic and friendly child, he enjoys meeting new people and playing with his family. I have attached a few pictures from a musical, basketball game, and a youth camp I have attended to show a few of the experiences I have been able to capture. Throughout these, and many more extracurricular events I have attended, I have met several different students from many different social groups, and got to see what they are interested in first hand. There is a very shy girl in my class who loves to act and sign, but I was not aware of this. After seeing her in the musical Grease I was finally able to hold a relational conversation with her. Breaking the ice with her interests has led to her being more vocal with me in class. She is now asking me about future musicals and show choir events that are happening soon, and is even willing to participate aloud more in class.
