Due to the lost cause during the Vietnam War, many Americans turned away from supporting the military. After the Vietnam War, military antipathy was on the rise. In the 21st Century, organizations such as Wounded Warrior, Salvation Army, and Travis Manion Foundation are some of the few that provide aid for military veterans. Although someone can argue that veterans receive enough aid from these organizations, a great deal of veterans are sleeping in public shelter homes or wandering in the streets begging for food and clothes. The song portrays the life of some of the veterans who suffer from broken families, post-traumatic stress disorder, and unemployment. The producer, Kevin Churko, utilizes ethos in order to provide awareness of veterans struggling to escape poverty. In addition, he employs pathos for the audience to understand the misery that combat veterans go through during and after the war. Moreover, he conveys to the American people the importance of gratitude towards military veterans. “Wrong Side of Heaven, Righteous Side of Hell” establishes a reflective and gloomy tone for the American people to recognize that some military veterans go through irreparable difficulties due to combat.

The video depicts pitiful clips of homeless men trying to find shelter. Military veterans are the reason of the United States of America’s dominance portrayed by the flags in the video. In addition, providing statistics, the ethos, or credibility, utilizes quotes such as, “more than 67 percent of homeless veterans served our country for at least 3 years.” (5FDPVEVO 0:46) These homeless veterans may sometimes not be perceived as military veterans and therefore do not receive the help that they need. Churko demonstrates a melancholic tone and applies ethos and pathos to capture the attention of anti-war protestors or even people who have no tolerance with the military veterans.
Another issue that combat veterans struggle with is the forgotten families who tend to end relationships with military veterans. “A soldier somewhere doesn’t understand why he is so easily discarded” (5FDPVEVO 1:20) conveys military members who are portrayed as hard or not having emotions by their family. Moreover, some military family members keep distant from combat veterans. However, these family members do not understand that military members need support more than themselves. This conveys that although these combat veterans kill enemies, who are also people, families increasingly need to support the emotions of these military members protecting the freedom of America. Although some people may argue that military members are cold-blooded killers, it is arguable that these members and veterans sometimes do not support what they are ordered, but in order to achieve the mission and be strategically successful, one must be able to overlook the small picture. “Yet he keeps fighting on,” (5FDPVEVO 1:27) demonstrates the military members who attempt to look at the big picture rather than the little things, but in the end, a human being with the right mind will always feel guilt for taking another man or woman’s life. “Divorce rate among military couples has increased 42%.” (5FDPVEVO 2:26) Military members are losing help from their families. The support from a family is extremely necessary in order to protect these veterans from eventually developing post-traumatic stress disorder, caused by the guilt inside them. In the concept of utilitarianism, taking the life of one to protect many fully supports the idea of being in the military. To protect America and its freedom, it is necessary for the military members to diminish terrorists and other national threats. Although this seems logical and normal, American people may sometimes not understand the guilt creeping on the conscious of combat members and veterans. Therefore, as American people, it is necessary to demonstrate appreciation and gratitude towards military members and military veterans who have served for the United States of America.

In addition to the guilt of taking another man’s life, military members also suffer from witnessing one of their brothers taking bullets. (5FDPVEVO 1:57) Due to these tragedies, most combat veterans struggle with post-traumatic stress disorder, also commonly known as PTSD. The danger of PTSD is that it is not a natural human behavior. In addition, PTSD is a disorder that has little to no chance of correction. As a result, most of the combat veterans who acquire PTSD end up committing suicide. In addition, with a melancholic tone that the line produces, along with the song and the video itself, the producer is able to capture the emotions of the audience. Therefore, after watching the video, the audience will understand to appreciate military members more.
