“Why is it important to be courageous?”

Courage is an important factor in defining one as an individual. Courage gives one the ability to make decisions based on fear, and pushes you to step out of your comfort zone. Being courageous is important, it helps you help others, take risks, and stand up for yourself.

Courage is seen when Charlie decides to help Jasper Jones after a knock on his window. Charlie knows that Jasper is the target of blame in the neighborhood because of his race. “Jasper Jones has come to my window. I don’t know why, but he has. Maybe he’s in trouble. Maybe he doesn’t have anywhere else to go” (Silvey 1). Charlie knows that he may get too involved and get himself into a big problem, but he sticks around

    Courage is when you know you’re beaten. The character Atticus, for instance, who was a seasoned lawyer acted courageous defending Tom Robinson. Tom Robinson was a black man who was accused of raping a white girl. Atticus was appointed to defend him. Jem was happy because he thought his father had won the case but Reverend Sykes loathed telling Jem “Now don’t you be so confident, Mr. Jem, I ain’t ever seen any jury decide in favor of a colored man over a white man…”(Lee 208).
