Examination of a Stunt Scene in West Side Story
For the scene I chose to examine, I chose to do the rumble from the musical West Side Story. The show is about the tension between a white American gang, the Jets, led by Riff Lorton, and a Puerto Rican gang of immigrants, the Sharks, led by Bernardo Nunez. After a fight breaks out police arrive and break it up. The Jets decide to challenge the Sharks to a rumble at an upcoming dance for control over the neighborhood and the sharks agree. Riff decides that his best friend Tony Wyzek, the co-founder of the Jets who left the gang, should join them for the rumble. Tony wants nothing to do with the fight.
Riff invites Tony to the dance,

Meanwhile most of the Jets have reassembled back at a garage. Another one of the Jets arrives and warns them that Chino is now after Tony with a gun. The Jets split up to find Tony. Anita comes home after learning of Bernardo's death. Maria and Tony quickly agree to meet at Doc's and run away. Anita sees Tony leaving and tells Maria she should not associate with him since he killed Bernardo, but Maria changes her about meeting with him at Doc’s. Anita tells her about Chino's plans and Maria tells her Tony is headed for Doc's store.
Schrenk arrives to question Maria about the disagreement at the dance. Maria fakes having a headache and asks Anita go to Doc's store for medicine and to tell Doc she has been detained. Knowing Maria's meaning, she agree to go. At Doc's, Anita offers help to the Jets but they harass her instead. After Doc breaks things up, Anita proclaims that Bernardo was right to hate them and then lies telling them that Chino killed Maria when he found about her and Tony’s

In the book The Outsiders they got to together and negotiated terms for rumbles, they did the same thing in the movie West Side Story. Like pony boy in The Outsiders, Tony in West Side Story realizes that fighting isn't worth it and that it got you no were. They both reacted differently though when they found it out, Tony goes and tries to stop the rumble while Ponyboy goes and fights in the rumble and still plays along while he's trying to tell others about it. In the book Randy and Cherry don't like the rumble so they decide not to go but Tony goes a step further and tries to stop the rumble.
Malcom comes up to Tony after the meeting and gives him a book to read called “The Greatest Miracle in the World”. Tony isn’t a fan of reading but he ends up reading the book and then every Monday continues to meet with Malcom and they talk about the book or the other books or thoughts Malcom asks Tony to read or think about.
...zi had just been assigned to bring down The Bootery, and Tony was asking the godfather of The Bootery if he could use Jr to kill Ventizzi.
Maria had no authority over her restless family. The source of the conflict between Antonio and Maria originates from her oldest sons taking to going where they please and not caring about their parent’s wishes. The burden of pleasing their parents passes from the eldest sons to the youngest one. With the sole duty of pleasing his parents, Tony internally rebels against their wishes instead seeking to set to rest his churning mind by seeking his own beliefs. His brothers console themselves about abandoning their family by saying that “Tony will be her priest” (Anaya 36) and not knowing that the “dreams of their father and mother [haunt] them” (Anaya 36) also haunted Antonio. Having the responsibilities of his brothers and his family shape the way he grows and thinks. He isn’t just thinking about himself he also has the problems of redeeming his family on his head. Through the story and through Ultima Tony realizes that he is not bound by obligations and can instead shape his own
In the end, Tony plays the role of both hero and villain. His wife, Marcela, represents both the whore and the virgin Mexican-American. The both prove unfaithful: Tony to America and Marcela to Mexico. Herein lays the schizophrenic world in which good and bad coexist across the borders of two emerging world countries struggling for control of land and culture. There’s a price to be paid for such human greed and unrealistic expectations. Ultimately it proves to be a place where virtue doesn’t remain intact and villains abound, even among the good guys!

Tony also stands up against a mob for Florence; everyone wants to punish Florence for "not believing in God" (214) and Tony pushes the crowd away and refuses to give Florence the penance that Florence does not deserve. Although Tony knows that he will be given the "Indian torture" (214), he still speaks up for his friend. Anaya often presents Tony as a dependent character, never wanting to "be away from the protection of [his] mother" (51); in fact, he's so close to his mother that it seems that he's going through Oedipus's Complex. Anaya actually does this to increase the impact of Tony's bravery. One might expect Tony to stay in his undercover bushes when Tenorio is standing so close; however, when Tony hears that Tenorio knows the way to kill Ultima, the thought to warn Ultima supercedes his fear and encourages his legs to pick up and run home (255).
Months have passed and Rico’s career has been destroyed. He sleeps in a extremely cheap hotel and has started drinking a lot He becomes angered when they read out that that the police detective called him a coward. When Bernardo saw Tony and Maria dancing, he freaked out and rushed her home, and Anita tried to tell Maria to stick to her own kind, Puerto Ricans, to forget Tony. They were expected to follow the informal sanctions, which are rules that no one speaks of but everyone knows about them. Another definition of informal sanction is “the usually unexpressed but widely known rules of group membership; the unspoken rules of social life” (Conley, ____). Though when murdered is committed the Jets all go into hiding and a plan to protect themselves because they broke a law society implemented and expected them to follow to stop crime, they broke a formal sanction.
