Presently, the Earth that we are living in now has evolved though the past billons of years and is yet on the process of changing for the future. Each single step and decision we make plays a part on the upcoming organisms/generations living on this planet. Evolution plays a role on how the Earth never remains constant. Evolution is “a theory that the differences between modern plants and animals are because of changes that happened by a natural process over a very long time” (Merriam Webster). It is known to occur not to individuals on its own, but to populations as a whole. Humans have been part of Earth for a while now and due to their presence a misleading idea that humans are the “highest point” in the evolution of the vertebrates would be established. Moreover, discoveries that have been made in the last few decades brings humanity to a point where people think that they are the most evolved they can get. However, these claims are wrong. We cannot put an endpoint on evolution. Evolution will always be part of our natural life. Therefore, humans are not the “highest point” in the evolution of the vertebrates.
The environment will always have an affect on humans and the same vice versa. The way that humans treat the environment will have an affect on how the environment shapes us. Due to human activity, the environment is not always changing for the better. The evidence for human evolution begins with the australopithecines. All the australopithecines were bipedal and therefore possible hominines. In details of their teeth, jaws, and brain size, however, they modify enough among themselves to be divided into five species: Australopithecus anamensis, A. afarensis, A. africanus, A. robustus, and A. boisei. The ecological consequences of global climate change are expected to be drastic although not much is known as to how individual species will react to these changes. Irrespective of the causes of climate change, whether anthropogenic or natural, it is imperative that we address these concerns, as they will have widespread impacts on the human species, both directly and indirectly through forcings on other species. The climate is not expected to shift evenly and the ways in which certain species adapt or migrate due to these changes could be erratic and unpredictable. The rate at which the earth’s climate is currently changing is unprecedented and has not been seen in the past 450,000 years. Although many species have simply migrated northward or vertically up mountainsides to escape warming habitats, others do not have this luxury or cannot migrate fast enough to survive. The earth’s temperature has risen by over one degree Fahrenheit over the past century, based on land and sea level measurements. The temperature is expected to continue rising at a faster pace over the next century, possibly increasing by as much as seven degrees Celsius. In comparison, the earth’s average global temperature was only twelve degrees cooler than it is now during the last great ice age. A vast majority of species now living do so within a narrow spectrum of temperature ranges and will not be able to adapt to a warming climate on such a large scale. If humans are the cause of a warming climate we will ultimately be responsible for the destruction of millions of species.
Throughout all of history, humans have been evolving not only genetically, but also culturally. Of the two evolutionary processes, cultural evolution happens more quickly, and has had a more noticeable effect on the environment compared to genetic evolution. Early hunter/gatherer societies evolved to agrarian society, which then had technological changes that affected the culture of the society. Unfortunately, while humans have been culturally evolving towards what is perceived to be progress, the environment has been compromised, marginalized, and degraded as it is continually exploited for human benefit and consumption.
