Hello, the topic we are talking about today in the featured video provided by SDI with the help of SDI Instructor Kip Carpenter is the evolution of firearms and their history. In this film they talked about where the firearms journey started in the 1500's. The first few different types of actions including the old snafus with the match lock system which used a match or a piece of cord but was very unreliable if it was raining. The wheel lock system was a interesting apparatus that worked like a clock mechanism and used a piece of pyrite for the ignition source. This system took 2 hands and wasn't very cumbersome. Soon after that the flint lock system was introduced which was really reliable. It was used for almost 100 years before something …show more content…
When we think about it all current models still in some fashion still use the same complex design that the started with in the 1500's. Of course they aren't the exact same but they follow the same line for design. Of course with new technology comes new parts and new firearms. I have always been very interested I the history of firearms. Learning and reading about the evolution that the firearms industry has encountered is literally mind blowing. Also the thought of where it will continue to go is even more interesting. My goal is to be like John Browning and become the next future genius gunsmith firearms inventor. If you are interested in learning more about the history of firearms there is tons of video's on YouTube that are very great and extremely knowledgeable. I would recommend this to my fellow students. In conclusion to this information I want to personally learn more about the history of firearms not only because I am very interested in this but because one day I would like to write a book about the evolution and history of todays modern firearms and where they began. I want it to be a very detailed yet interesting and one day possibly be a great utensil for future

This monograph will appeal to anyone interested in learning about the development of firearms and its close relationship with
In this day in age, it seems as if a new weapon is created everyday. To think that people don't understand what they do or how much they can destroy is almost unbelievable. We create these massive weapons, with deadly intentions but don’t realize what we are doing with them. And just like that, at a click of a button millions of precious lives can be lost. We are so in the moment that we forget that it can’t be taken back either. It’s happened in our history and is still happening in our world today. It occurred in Kurt Vonnegut’s novel Cat’s Cradle where he illustrates a realistic outcome of an extremely detrimental weapon being used on the world.
Weapons have been around from the Neanderthals of the post-ice age, to the Taliban in Afghanistan. Rocks became knives, sticks became spears, and bayonets became AK-47’s. The technology from the French and Indian War was revolutionized and manufactured by the newly opened weaponry companies. Colt and Winchester had a new end of the market during the times of conflict in the United States.

The gun was a hand-crank-operated weapon with six barrels revolving around a central shaft. Having a gun that revolves was very difficult because the barrels would not always line up correctly when being fired. The original gun was actually designed to fire the standard military issue paper cartridge of the day, .58 caliber. A .58 caliber bullet has a diameter of an inch and is capable of damaging anything it hits. The paper cartridge was placed inside a steel or brass chamber with a percussion nipple on the back end just like the muzzle loading rifles and pistols of there time.
I was sitting in the old rickety chair that looked as if it had been there for five years. The smell of gunpowder hung in the morning air as I leaned over the rifle rest. My finger wrapped around the trigger as my eye focused through the scope of my grandfather’s Springfield ’03. I took a deep breath and let half out. My finger tightened on the trigger as I awaited the recoil and crack of the gunpowder igniting. Finally, when my finger’s pull was enough to move the trigger, the gun went off. Moments like this are why I love shooting guns.
The flintlock musket was the weapon used the most in the revolutionary war. The flintlock musket was the most essential weapon used in the revolutionary war. This was the primary weapon for multiple soldiers. This gun was very long it was about five feet and it weighed about nine pounds. The downfall to having this gun though was the fact that it only shot one shot at a time. After each shot the soldiers had to put gun powder in the barrel. What held the flint were two jaws, when the flint hit the frizzen it would create a spark. When the spark was created it would make the powder react, which made the
A majority of weapons used in World War II were improved weapons from World War II. Most guns increased in power and abilities. In World War II people thought that pistols were useless but this was proved wrong due to the fact that the U.S. Mi...
All guns serve different purposes. Guns have been a part of American history for many years. Many different kinds of guns have been used for many different types of jobs. In like manner hunters have different guns for different game. Just as police use guns for law enforcement, hunters use guns to harvest game. The two most commonly used firearms of hunters, are the rifle and the shotgun. Both the rifle and the shotgun are used for hunting, but the two have some major differences. The main differences between the two firearms are cost, range and the type of ammunition that each firearm uses. Most gun manufactures sell shotguns much cheaper than they sell rifles. Shotguns are not as complex internally, and have fewer parts than rifles. The simplicity of a shotgun also makes them easier to clean and maintain, which cuts down on cost. Being that shotguns have fewer parts than rifles, this helps with expense also. No matter how well a hunter takes care of his gun, over time internal parts will either brake or need to be replaced. If there are fewer parts, there is less to replace and less money to spend. Rifles on the other hand, seem to cost much more than shotguns. Rifles are much more complex internally than shotguns and therefore cost more to produce. Also when hunting with rifles some type of vision enhancement is require...
Some choose the noble choice of the military, others to work in construction and automotive toiling with shovel and wrench. Others choose more precise work, such as becoming machinists, doctors and engineers--the secret behind the scenes people who make things work in today’s society. But, there is a job that entails all, something complicated requiring the finesse of a heart surgeon, but with the understanding of a engineer: the art of gunsmithing. An art that essentially made the United States possible and separates it from others in the world. From the invention of black powder and the hand cannon to the 6,000 round per minute Dillon Minigun, firearms

The next real step in the evolution of the gun came during the Civil War. Rifles were invented that ...
“Volley Guns” (Chivers, 2010, p.26) or also known as “Organ Guns” (Ellis, 1975, p.10) were first attempts at increasing firepower by adding several barrels at the firing itself, rather than simply attempting to increase the rate of fire. “Gunsmiths had long ago learned to place barrels side by side on frames to create firearms capable of discharging projectiles in rapid succession. These unwieldy devices, or volley guns, were capable in theory of blasting a hole in a line of advancing soldiers” (Chivers, 2010, p.26). An example of such weapons can be seen on July 28, 1835 when Giuseppe Fieshi unleashed terror on King Louis-Phillipe in Paris, France. He fired his 25 barrel “volley gun”, killing 18 of the king's entourage and grazing the King's skull. The weapon was ineffective however. Four of the barrels failed and another four ruptured. Two other barrels had exploded inside, grievously wounding Giuseppe. (Chivers, 2010, p. 27)
Muzzleloader were slow to load, heavy, and did not shoot far and performed inefficiently in damp weather. The muzzleloader was greatly used during the American Civil War by both opposing belligerents. The world saw many changes from 1850-1900 in the development of firearms and ammunition muzzleloading was replaced by breech-loading firearms. The breech-loading firearms otherwise known as the modern firearm loaded completely different from the muzzleloader. The modern firearm barrel is loaded from the rear or the breech of the barrel this allows for quicker reloading. The modern ammunition is far more trustworthy than black powder, especially in damp weather conditions. Few things the modern firearm and the muzzle loader had in common was the way it fired the ignition, burning of gunpowder, which creates pressure, and the use of the barrel to propel the projectile. The modern fire uses cartridge ammunition that include a casing which are made from different types of metal such as steel, aluminum, brass, and nickel. The cartridge holds the gunpowder at the end mid section of the casing, a primer is also loaded at the end of the casing. When pulling the trigger the
Since 1845, stamped brass has been used to house the propellent, bullet, and primer. Occasionally, steel would be used but only for “plinking”. It would also be used in military ammunition in both world wars. The firearm cartridge invention led to the creation of two to five round capabilities of the first bolt action, close range firearms, thus leading to a major change in how wars would be fought. This leap came with a high price. The mechanism of a modern gun not only must load and fire, but also must remove the spent case, which will need just as many moving parts. Many malfunctions
