The Evolution of Music Wake up- 55 years ago before legendary Buddy Holly passed away he stated “Without Elvis none of us would be here.” On February 3rd, 1959 Buddy, J.P. Richardson, and Ritchie Valens were all killed in a plane crash in Clear Lake, Iowa.
Generally Speaking- What kind of music has been “in style” throughout time? What were people listening to in the 11th century? The 50’s? The 80’s? Well that’s what I am going to tell you about today. Music in the 40’s reflected the pain of World War II, but the music tried to remain upbeat for the sake of the country. Because much of the world was involved in the war during this decade many artists and groups went on to entertain in the USO. Popular artists during this time were Frank Sinatra, The Andrews Sisters, Billie Holliday, and Ella Fitzgerald.
Music of the 1950’s reflected changes in society in the world, and the US alone. Traditional pop, Rock n’ Roll, and R&B dominated the charts pushing aside the jazz era of music. There were many great artists of the 50’s some including; Buddy Holly, Doris Day, Johnny Cash, Hank Williams, Ray Charles, and Elvis Pressley. Elvis had the highest number of hits at the top of the Billboard number one singles chart. He remained the only artist to be at the top for 57 weeks straight. In 1992 Whitney Houston released her first motion picture along with the soundtrack that took over the country. Whitney’s rendition of Dolly Parton’s “I Will Always Love You” is still todays most well known ballads ever. In 1996 The Spice Girls released their first big hit “Wannabe” which was pretty big for a British girl group then because no other group had done what they had before. Just 6 and a half months apart two very big motion picture movies were released; Armageddon and the true story of Titanic. These two movies also produced some of the greatest music of the 90’s. Armageddon’s soundtrack involved the music of rock band Aerosmith; the best song on the album was “I Don’t Wanna Miss A Thing” which is still a love ballot today. The soundtrack to Titanic had tons of music but the most memorable song was Celine Dion’s “My Heart Will Go On”. These two songs are the most used ballots of all time.
