Evolution of Las Vegas is hard to follow. Only few fragments of the original casinos survive today. Las Vegas went thru six architectural eras so far. First there was pre-strip of the 1930s. At the beginning of 1930s few billboards and gas station lined the asphalt road. Apart from a few small casinos, downtown’s Fremont Street was indistinguishable ordinary main street somewhere in Midwest. The second period was the birth of the strip. I am referring to strip as an internationally known area for its concentration of casinos and hotel resorts along its main route. Second era began in 1939, when first casinos appeared. Although gambling became legal at 1931. Nevada legalized most forms of gambling while the construction of Hoover Dam was ongoing. …show more content…
These places were designed in extravagant and modern style. Vegas met the national success in tourism with promotional campaigns. The fourth period began in 1958 with Stardust. By using the sign and hotel logo as huge part of its design. This established an unconventional but very effective response to the strip site. The style spread and Fremont Street signs were growing in size and amount of lights. Some of the casinos created whole facades of glowing strips of neon. The opening of Caesars Palace marked the fifth era. The era of themed style started in 1966, where numerous strip resorts stick to its own world based on historical period or exotic location. Around 1980 Las Vegas entered the sixth, which is also current era, Influence of by large number of hotel corporations. The recreational strip became a competition of various resorts. The 10$ million Riviera built in 1955 was the strips first higher rise building. Nine stories building including up to 300 rooms was a departure from the strips motel format. There were doubts that the Mojavi desert wouldn’t be able to support building this tall. But earnings of Riviera were equal to Miami
The first article, “The Best Night $500,000 Can Buy,” portrays the perfect night out in Las Vegas. Devin chronologically takes the reader through a night in one of the famous clubs in Las Vegas, Marquee. He describes the fundamental marketing techniques that promoters use to lure women into the venue, the prices that high-rollers pay to get a VIP access and tables, and the “shitshow” atmosphere where people are dancing as if they are on Ecstasy (some people are actually on drugs). From personal experience, Las Vegas is definitely the Disney World for adults because people can openly consume alcoholic beverages on Fremont Street while enjoying their time at the arcades, night and day clubs, pools, gambling rooms, theme park rides, shopping centers, restaurants, strip clubs, and wedding chapels. Which ultimately le...
The Gilded Age first began around 1865, the end of the civil war, and ended around 1914, the beginning of World War One, and one of the largest characteristics of this time period is the leisure class participating in conspicuous consumption. The Ponce de Leon Hotel reflects the values of the Gilded Age and the rising leisure class in the fact that it allowed the wealthy to engage in conspicuous consumption in front of other such wealthy families, as well as it provided Henry Flagler with the ability to engage in conspicuous consumption by the building of the lavish hotel Ponce de Leon.
For years casino gambling was portrayed in the media and Hollywood as being associated with criminal activities and the mafia. Now with proper scrutiny and government regulations casino gambling has become a lucrative business, with casinos stock even trading on Wall Street. Casino gambling is an ever increasingly popular and legal activity in many states throughout the United States. “The term gambling or ‘gaming’ as the industry calls it, means any legalized form of wagering or betting conducted in a casino, on a riverboat, on an Indian reservation, or at any other location under the jurisdiction of the United States” (National Gambling Impact Study Commission Act). States that allow casino gambling benefit vastly by re-incorporating the taxation off of commerce gained from casinos and tourism associated with the casinos back into the state and local communities. Jobs created by casinos also have a positive impact on the economy in local communities surrounding casinos as well as, the states that legalize gambling. Texas, while allowing horse and dog racing, lottery, and charitable bingo, does not currently prohibit casino gambling. In this essay, I will provide the different reasons the State of Texas will benefit from legalizing casinos gambling. By not having casinos, Texas continues to lose valuable tax revenue that could be awarded to state and local government funded programs for example, education, public safety, economic development, and infrastructure improvements. With the increasing number of legal casinos in bordering states such as Louisiana, New Mexico, and Oklahoma, the loss of tourism and tax revenue is a growing concern for Texas. Passing legislation to allow casinos in the State of Texas will help fund ...

Despite its notorious reputation for sex and gambling, Nevada actually has a long and less sordid history of being a mining state. Before 1859, the state had been sparsely populated by small mining camps and trading outposts as people migrated through Nevada on their way to the west coast1. In 1859, a rich silver deposit, otherwise known as the Comstock Lode was discovered in the state2. This caused an influx of people and a sudden outcropping of settlements, towns, and cities such as Virginia City. Partly due to the sudden rise in population, Nevada became a territory in 1861 and a stat...
Leaving Las Vegas, directed by Mike Figgis and based on the autobiographical novel by John O’Brien, is an emotional story about an alcoholic who rejects life and wants to drink himself to death in Las Vegas, and an unselfish prostitute who loves him the way he is. Ben, played by Nicholas Cage, was a former movie producer in Los Angeles and has obviously crumbled in the glamour world of Hollywood which is shown in the opening scene. Here Ben is already an alcoholic when he disturbs former colleagues that are embarrassed of his appearance at the restaurant. Ben is unstable and a mess when one of the men give him money and tell him not to contact him again. Ben then gets fired and ultimately decides to drink himself to death in Las Vegas, a city constructed on greed, crime and moral negligence. We are never certain of the cause of Ben’s alcoholism, especially when he says “I don’t remember if I started drinking because my wife left me, or my wife left me because I started drinking.” In a last attempt and hope of human interaction, Ben pays the hooker Sera, played by Elisabeth Shue, 500 dollars to spend a night with him. Sera is magically attracted to the loser type of man, as Figgis shows us with her boyfriend Yuri, her abusive pimp and boyfriend. This drama is about the absolute love between two people that live on society’s border who need each other to know that they exist.
of the 1920’s. The fashion went from everything being the same to having so many different things to choose from. Therefore we can all have a different style to fit our personalities.
Gambling goes way back into 1860’s in Nevada (“History of Gaming in Nevada”). The history began around 1864 to 1931, starting with the prospectors (ibid). The prospectors were the people who brought the gaming/gambling into Nevada and made it known. However, Abraham Lincoln chose Nevada Territory Governor James Nye ,who was against gambling, encouraging the legislature to ban any forms of gaming (ibid). When Nevada became a state in 1864, the first legislature tried to legalize and regulate gambling, but they failed to do that (ibid). Since then, gambling was dramatically reduced with the operators being punished and little to no players (ibid). In 1909, Progressive Movement passed legislation , banning gaming in Nevada (ibid). Later on, a bill was introduced to legalize gambling again, but soon to fail another time (“Bill That Transformed A City”). The Legislature of 1927 considered another bill that was similar, it passed the assembly, but lost by one vote in the Senate (ibid). Around the 1930s , the bill passed the Assembly and Senate. Fred Balzar, an american politician, signed the bill and gambling was finally legal in what was then the nation’s least populous state. Soon after the gambling was legalized, casinos started to build up in Las Vegas.
Although many Arizona vacationers find their way to Las Vegas, Laughlin, Nevada offers travelers many of the same amenities with less hustle and bustle. Over the past few decades, Las Vegas has become a hot-bed for the gambling and nightlife scene of West coast vacationers. With Nevada's proximity to Arizona, many of us are unaware of the fact that Laughlin, Nevada can offer travelers just what they are looking for, with a small town appearance. Although Las Vegas has been a well known desert oasis, with over-sized hotels and dozens of popular casinos, Laughlin can be just as enticing.
Las Vegas also it is familiar as “Sin City,” is one of the most famous tourist place in the world. It is an incredible place in the middle of dessert, it is a city established from nothing to something great. Vegas has developed in tourism and population as well to become beyond universal. Las Vegas has ranked the fastest-growing state, according to the Las Vegas review journal, “Nevada ranked as the nation’s two fastest-growing states over the past year, according to U.S. Census Bureau population estimates for 2016 released Tuesday.” Las Vegas is known as a gambling city, nightclubs and casinos. Gambling plays a big role in many Nevadans Lifestyles. This is such a problem that should be considered. In this essay I will discuss about how gambling has a big effect on Nevadans lifestyle, plus how to avoid being addictive to gambling. In Las Vegas there are stereotypes of gambling, such as Lottery, slot machines, cards, and many others. But in this essay I will only discuss on slot machines.
The Great Transformation From A Casino City To a Resort Destination Atlantic City is the place to gamble on the East Coast. Although this may initially seem to be a positive characteristic, it is evident that this destination has the capability to be so much more than it already is. This point of interest has the world’s first boardwalk, which opened in 1881, has 4 miles of hotels, amusements, and casinos. Atlantic City was originally a resort town, until 1978, when it changed into a gaming city. This popular day-trip destination had over 34 million visitors in 1998 alone. Despite this amazing statistic, along with the revenue that gambling brings in, many steps are being taken in order to further promote the expansion of this great city. The renovations and improvements being made to the Atlantic City Convention Center are already increasing the amount of money coming in. There is a great deal of other things to focus on in the Atlantic City region. In endorsing local attractions in this scenic area, and in shifting the target market of this spot, this city would change back into a resort destination. When most people think of Atlantic City, the first thing that comes to mind is the casino attractions that are available. With the city’s constant shuffle and excitement, gamblers from all over go there dreaming of a big win. Many people consider Atlantic City to be the “Las Vegas of the East Coast”. There are over 12 casinos, with one building as magnificent as the next. At any given second of the day, these hopefuls may have their lives changed in an instant with just one win. These casino hotels gain most of their income from gamblers. Casinos employ almost 49,000 people every year. This number should actually jump when the Marina District opens. Although Atlantic City prospers as a gambler’s paradise, many would love to show others just how much more Atlantic City really has to offer its tourists. The Atlantic City Convention Center, built in 1929, was renovated with $72 million in 1997. With the world’s largest pipe organ, everyone from the Beatles to Pavarotti has played there. It was designated a historic landmark in 1987. Conventions, trade shows, meetings, and public events of the greater Atlantic City area all take place here. When the renovation is finally completed, it will seat up to 12,000 people for special events.

Brothels have existed in Nevada since the old mining days of the 1800s and were first licensed in 1971. Back in 1859, the gold prospectors discovered high grade silver in the hills of what we now know as Virginia City. Miners came and lived in tents, dens, caves and dugouts. By 1...
Marriott International, Inc is founded in 1927 and in 1983 it became the first hotel chain designed for business travellers. The roll of a dice, the spin of a roulette wheel, the shuffle of cards. These are scenes that flash before our eyes in movies and media in an attempt to glorify the “play-once-win-all” way of thinking. Behind the flashing lights and lucky sevens lies an underlining danger in the interworking’s of casinos and gambling organizations alike. In 1931, Nevada passed the Assembly Bill 98 legalized many forms of gambling (REVIEW-JOURNAL, 2017). Since then, more than 500 casino establishments erected on the face of America, stretching from coast to coast. On the surface casinos are seen as a harmless recreation to some, to others it’s a heavy financial burden that impacts the addicted individual and has a back-fire effect on family and society. Likewise, on the surface, only 2.5 percent of American adults are problem gamblers (David R. Francis, 2010). Some might ask, so what’s the big deal, 2% sure doesn’t seem like much? This number in fact accounts for about 4-6 million people and with the exponential rise of technology, methods of gambling are becoming as easily accessible as reaching for a phone (David R. Francis, 2010). Factors such as increased crime rates, degradation of family life and false economic benefits all point to the
