Recommended: The history of golf
Golf was invented 500 years ago in Scotland. It was a simple game that had limited rules. Like all things it has changed and become more complex and confusing game. The original balls were made from wood stuffed with goose feathers to todays 500 dimpled cases with a polymer resin compound placed inside. Science, specifically physics, has never played a larger role in the world of golf and it is continuously trying to advance the game. The change from a round ball of wood stuffed with feathers to a hexagonal dimpled ball constructed by compressed rubber have been achieved to advance the game. Companies like Titleist, Callaway and Srixon have staff specifically focussed on golf ball design, they are aerodynamic scientists. The aim of this scientific report is to find …show more content…
In the early 15th century the golf ball was first introduced. It was carved from the wood of a birch tree and was stuffed with goose and/or duck feathers (Pemberton, 2015). It had no dimples and was not perfectly rounded. It often broke after the first 3 shots and would have to be replaced after one hole. It wasn’t until the mid-1800’s that the dimpled golf ball was produced. It was erected by Robert Adams Paterson and was made from the sap from a sapodilla tree. He found the sap could be heated up, placed into a round mould and would then dry hard (Pemberton, 2015). The bonus was being able to re-mould it after the round if it was out of shape. It was the first mass-manufactured ball in golf history. During the 1920’s Coburn Haskell introduced the Haskell golf ball. It was dimpled and wound with rubber bands to give it a spring like action off
The golf swing is possibly one of the most challenging and technical processes. In Eric Nagourney’s article, Exploring the science of the golf
The Titleist brand was inspired by an event which occurred in 1932. An amateur golfer, Phil Young, missed a putt while playing in a match with his friend. Convinced that it was the ball 's fault, Young and his opponent went to the hospital, x-rayed the golf ball in question and found that its core was, in fact, off-center.
Given that the conventional golf club had been around for approximately 250 years, Ely Callaway figured that there was plenty of room to re-invent it. Although his new company started off manufacturing rather traditional hickory-shafted putters and wedges, by 1988 the Callaway Golf Company had introduced a remarkably innovative set of irons under the label S2H2. These irons featured hollow shafts with weight redistributed to the hitting area.
In 1982, Ely Reeves Callaway had bought his small wedge and putter golf business and called it Hickory Stick USA and created clubs that were enjoyable for the average golfer. He called these clubs the Demonstrably Superior and Pleasingly Different (DSPD) clubs. This was a code he had always lived by. The family of Ely Callaway are not involved with the company today because he was told to choose his successor, and had chose Ron Draqpeau. He is a man who only shared the same vision and thought of golf, but also had the skills as a leader to continue his wonderful golf company. The goal was to make a good product and tell the truth about the game. In those days Ely would provide them to his customers personally in the back of his Cadillac. He made sales calls and talked to pros, amateurs, and those who came to be known as an average golfer. Finally, Hickory Stick USA came to be knows as Callaway Hickory Stick U.S.A, and not too long after that, Callaway Golf.
The curveball was invented over 100 years ago by William Arthur Cummings (Fleitz, D). His older brother and teammates called him Candy Cummings (Fleitz, D). Cummings started to develop the curveball in 1861 and 1862 without much progress. After many years Cummings finally invented the curveball in 1867 (Fleitz, D). This invention made him one of the most dominant pitchers of the time. Cummings quit baseball at the age of twenty-eight (Fleitz, D). Other players started to develope their own curveball by the 1874 season (Fleitz, D). Batters started to learn to hit the curveball by the 1877 season (Fleitz, D).
The legendary beginnings of golf in the United States can be traced back to the mid-1600s. One of the first published references to golf in America was in 1659 referring to the ban on golf in the streets of Albany, New York. The next substantial reference to the game comes from Charleston, North Carolina in 1786. At that time, a local Charleston newspaper ran a story about the formation of the Harleston Green Golf Club. The Harleston Green remained in operation for approximately twenty-five years, closing about the time of the War of 1812. Around the same time period, approximately1795, another golf club opened in Savannah, Georgia. References to this golf club continued until 1811 again apparently closing just before the beginning of the war. The War of 1812 served to destroy the desire to play golf. It wasn’t until the late 1870s, well after the Civil War ended, that there was a resurgence of golf in the United States.

The golf ball has changed dramatically through the years. Smooth hardwood balls were used between the 1400 and 1700's.
The organ of golf in it most primary of forms is unknown, but there are many cultures that show golf in times as early as the thirteenth century. Three groups of people claim that they started golf: The English, the Dutch and the Scots. The English say that they started golf because of the sketches of a man apparently preparing to strike a ball in a golf like manner stained into the windows of the Gloucester Cathedral, England. Many scholars doubt that theory because it could have been a man playing cambuca, a popular pastime of English society in that time. The Dutch say that they started golf because they feel it is a mixture of the two Dutch games chole and jeu de mail. Many people believe that the word golf originated from Holland with the word "colf" which means club. A Dutch man named Van Hengal traced colf back to December 1297, in a town of Loenen in Northern Holland. In this month, local townsfolk played four holes of the game to commemor...
Basketball has been around for a long while. It was first established in 1891 by James Naismith. James Naismith was once the basketball coach at Kansas University. When he invented the sport he used a peach basket as the goal. When it first originated every time they would score they’d be required to call the janitor out with a ladder to get the ball down. After a few months they cut the bottoms of the basket out.
The sport of golf was created a long time ago but is not actually precisely dated for when the game was made. According to Jack Connelly, a retired teacher and golfer, reports that the game has been dated back to places like China and Scotland. There also is a wide year range for the time golf was created going all the way back to the 960’s to more exact years like 1457. The game of golf as we know it today was “born on May 14, 1754, when the Society of St. Andrews was founded by a group
There are many phenomenon’s as to why people find golf boring or lethargic. I am going to lay out for you, a few critical points on how to change your perspective on the trials of golf. Branching off from our last article, the game of volleyball itself was invented in 1895, and almost at once it swept around the world; not only as an official sport, but also as a pastime that could be described as one of the “crazed” varieties. Well, it didn’t just stop there; volleyball eventually made its way outdoors, to the beach!
