Evie's Unfairytale Book Report

I nearly didn’t pick up Evie's Unfairytale by Evie Berg. The cover made it look like a romance or a fantasy. However, the book is actually a fictionalised account of a true story of stalking and persecution. The fictional element is that the book is written from the point of view of the antagonists as well as the author herself. Evie has a difficult childhood; her family lose their money and they end up living on a trailer park. She later marries Tim who turns out to be a sex addict. After their divorce, she meets Chad who appears to be her fairytale Prince Charming. Unfortunately, Chad has two children by two other women, Rachel and Tracey, who are both nightmare harpies from hell. The two women join forces to destroy Chad and Evie’s marriage and to ruin Evie’s life. I really …show more content…

On the day Evie’s dad died and she had to go to court, Chad didn’t accompany her. “Divorce him!” I croak hoarsely. Chad’s complete lack of support for Evie throughout, while continuing to protest his love for her, was incredibly frustrating. Especially as Evie was still clinging to her ideals of a fairytale romance. To be fair, though Evie appears to be very bad at making life choices, she didn’t deserve the hell she went through. Her story has also highlighted corruption issues within the legal and CPS systems. It is a serious problem where a person accused of child molestation may actually be the victim of other people’s lies. The book itself is well written but I found a fair number of typos, so it needs another round of editing. There is also a continuity problem in the hospital. Rachel arrives wearing a motocross outfit and leaves in a little black dress. I have agonised over the rating. If this book were totally fictional, I would give it 2 stars. As it’s a true story, my frustration over Evie’s choices shouldn’t detract from the value of the book or its message. I am therefore giving the book 3 out of 4
