Evidenced-based practice is an extremely important function in the role as a registered nurse. In my preceptor rotation I have seen evidence-based practice demonstrated both effectively and ineffectively on the floor. In all instances when evidence- based practice was demonstrated effectively the patients were more comfortable post operatively and had must better outcomes.
On a floor such as Orthopedics, pain management is a top nursing priority and intervention for almost all of your patients. Many of these patients can experience extreme discomfort if their pain is not managed effectively. Placing this kind of the stress on the body can alter the function of other organs and slow the patient’s recovery. I have seen evidence-based practice
demonstrated effectively when regarding pain management. During my rotation the nurses on the floor consistently give pain medication on schedule to ensure they are staying ahead of the patient’s pain. In addition, they re-evaluate pain management interventions thirty minutes after administering a pain medication in order to ensure their interventions have been effective. This unit protocol ensures patient comfort and better outcomes for your patient during their stay. Unfortunately, I have witnessed ineffective evidence- based practice in regards to voiding after catheter removal. In more than one instance I have witness patients being sent home with inaccurate documentation of voiding post catheter removal. In many instances this was a result of patients not adhering to the request to void in a urinal or hat and let the nurse know. As well, physicians consistently put discharge orders in before documentation of a void was ever reported. Urinary retention can lead to UTI’s and bladder infections. I belief that more emphasis should be placed on this protocol to decrease the instances of urinary tract infections related to urinary catheters. My time on the floor has allowed me to witness the use of evidence-based practice in a variety of ways. These experiences have shaped my own ideals in terms of what you should do as a nurse in order to ensure your patient the best possible outcome. Evidence-based practice is going to be an important function post-graduation and throughout your entire career as a nurse.

According to Sheperis, Young, and Daniels 2010, “it should be easy for the reader to connect the findings with the stated research questions and to determine whether the finding support or refute your hypothesis” (p.239). The following are two challenges that the counseling profession is faced with when it comes to outcome research: (1) producing sufficient volumes of evidence and (2) being able to find, interpret, and use the evidence from previous research. These challenges place a limit on the variety of interventions that are available to the counseling profession. One intervention that works for one child, might not produce the same results for another child. So it is very important that research provides information that is useful and effective. The lack of studies makes it more challenging to determine whether or not an intervention is an effective solution that will improve a student’s behavior or academics. “Ultimately, regardless of how effective a counselor may be, if the problems are not properly measured and assessed, intervention is disadvantaged and treatment is comprised” (Sheperis, Young, & Daniels, 2010, p. 3).
