Is this an apology or blame? In the beginning, God tells Adam not to eat the forbidden fruit. Adam disobeys God by doing so, but most people put the blame on Eve. In the poem, “Eve’s Apology,” Eve expresses her feelings toward the entire situation and shows how she is not to blame. She blames Adam for the pain we endure today. Eve eats from the forbidden tree out of curiosity. She wants to share it with Adam, so he can feel like she feels. Eve gives the fruit to Adam out of love, but she does not force him to eat it. Adam has control of his mind, so he disobeys God on his own. “Do not the thing that goes against thy heart” (Lanyer 424). Aemilia Lanyer, the author of the poem, “Eve’s Apology,” lived in the mid 1500’s and 1600’s. Living in this time period, had much influence on her writing. She published her landmark book, Salve Deus Rex Judaeorum, the same year that the King James Bible and three of Shakespeare’s plays were published (Wilhelm 424). Lanyer brings out the life of this poem with the poetic devices, irony, and unusual language.
To begin, the poem, “Eve’s Apology,” uses many different poetic devices such as alliteration, assonance, rhyme scheme, and simile. The author uses a great number of alliteration, which is the repetition of constant sounds generally at the beginnings of words. Alliteration can be seen in the words “what” and “weakness” in line 3. Some more examples of alliteration throughout the poem are “subtle serpent’s” (23), “he had him” (24), and “with words which” (30). Assonance, the repetition of the same or similar vowel sounds in stressed syllables that end with different consonant sounds, is another poetic device that the author uses greatly. Throughout "Eve's Apology," Layner confidently makes her point of female inequality and female injustice by using poetic devices, while continuing to keep an ironic tone and bring out unusual language. She is clearly trying to prove that woman and men are equal. She suggests that because Adam is a man, thus "stronger" than Eve, he should be held responsible for eating the forbidden fruit rather than the "weaker" Eve. Layner believes that men should not look down upon women as lesser and weaker than themselves; she successfully proves that women deserve an equal status with men. Throughout the poem, Layner makes the point that the reason men have always been condescending to woman is dishonest because men are actually more at fault for the pain we endure today.
To begin, the use of assonance can be heard in the poem in comparing the context or appearance of the black berries to words. This can be seen in the second line of the poem, “among the fat, overripe, icy, black berries,” where words can also be “fat” as in full of positive or negative meaning, “overripe” as in exaggerated,” and “icy” as in hurtful or cold. Nonetheless, the emphasis in the vowels in the phrase makes it stand out more to the ears of the readers. Another example of assonance can be seen in the eighth line, “fall almost unbidden to my tongue,” where the vowels in “fall” and “unbidden” can be heard. According to this phrase, the speaker compares “the ripest berries” to words, seeing as both “fall” from their tongue, as if the speaker could not control the need to learn more words.
The alliteration used is to emphasize rhythm in the poem. On the other hand, the poet also depicts a certain rhyme scheme across each stanza. For example, the first stanza has a rhyme scheme of this manner a, b, c, d, e, a. With this, the rhyme scheme depicted is an irregular manner. Hence, the poem does not have a regular rhythm. Moreover, the poet uses a specific deign of consonance, which is present in the poem (Ahmed & Ayesha, p. 11). The poet also uses the assonance style depicted in the seventh stanza, “Seven whole days I have not seen my beloved.” The letter ‘o’ has been repeated to create rhythm and to show despair in the poem. On the second last line of the seventh stanza, the poet uses the style of consonance, “If I hug her, she’ll drive illness from me. By this, the letter ‘l’ is repeated across the line. Much of the story of Adam and Eve can be explained within biblical context, and its male supremacy bias confirms to be of historical origin rather than divine; however it is perceived as comprising the “fundamental,” and essentially destructive "truths" about the nature of women. Eve has represented the fundamental character and identity of all women. No, there haven’t been other women with redeemable qualities to represent them throughout history. Even those as great as Cleopatra have not earned the title as extraordinary woman in the history books, because her dominance over men was perceived as unbecoming and disgraceful. However, Eve’s image is what has represented women. Through her words and actions, the true nature of women was exposed; her story and “weakness” showcases what women’s innate nature corresponds to. Eve represents everything about a woman a man should guard against; she is the original sinner, and cannot be trusted in both form and symbol. The idea that her actions are not without warrant, and therefore she is a representation of us is, in fact, what has been propagated throughout hundreds of years. Alliteration is the occurrence of the same letter or sound at the beginning of adjacent or closely connected words. Poe uses this literary device to describe the in bird in line 71 he says, “What grim, ungainly, ghastly, gaunt, and ominous bird of yore.” It gives the line a rhythm and tone that is easily understood and read. The first literary device that can be found throughout the poem is couplet, which is when two lines in a stanza rhyme successfully. For instance, lines 1-2 state, “At midnight, in the month of June / I stand beneath the mystic moon.” This is evidence that couplet is being used as both June and moon rhyme, which can suggest that these details are important, thus leading the reader to become aware of the speaker’s thoughts and actions. Not only the words, but the figures of speech and other such elements are important to analyzing the poem. Alliteration is seen throughout the entire poem, as in lines one through four, and seven through eight. The alliteration in one through four (whisky, waltzing, was) flows nicely, contrasting to the negativity of the first stanza, while seven through eight (countenance, could) sound unpleasing to the ear, emphasizing the mother’s disapproval. The imagery of the father beating time on the child’s head with his palm sounds harmful, as well as the image of the father’s bruised hands holding the child’s wrists. It portrays the dad as having an ultimate power over the child, instead of holding his hands, he grabs his wrists.
The last two lines of this speech are very dramatic. Eve has such a great love for Adam that she could endure anything as long as he would be by her side, but she would be nothing without him. However, this creates a paradox. One may ask, if Eve loves Adam as much as she professes to, then why put his life in jeopardy just to make her own suffering more bearable? The answer, of course, goes back to the selfishness that has pervaded her entire speech. These lines stand out because of the spondees at the end of both of them.
He knows that they are now doomed, but immediately decides that he cannot live without Eve. Eve wants him to suffer the same fate as she. Adam eats the fruit. Both the Bible and Paradise Lost hold Adam and Eve at fault. But, both accounts place one of them in a more negative account. In the Bible, Adam is held in a more negative light, whereas in Paradise Lost, Eve is put into a more negative light. Neither of these depictions is correct, neither source hold them both in contempt for their actions they both committed. It is always one person’s fault, which is not accurate when both partook in the fateful eating of the fruit.
Even though Adam willingly agreed to eat the fruit, it’s easy to see this incident was caused by Eve. In Speght’s “A Muzzle for Melastomus”, she takes a more defensive stance and defends Eve even though she agrees Eve was the first one to sin. Speght’s defense of Eve is based on the fact that Eve is everyone’s source of discrimination against woman, and she goes to great lengths to prove that Men and Woman are equal despite the faults of Eve. “The first promise that was made in paradise God made to woman, that by her seed should the serpents head be broken… that as the woman had been an occasion of sin, so should woman bring forth the savior from sin, which was in the fullness of time accomplished… so that by Eve’s blessed seed (as saint Paul affirms) it is brought to pass, ‘that male and female are all one in Christ Jesus’” (Pg. 1654). She argues that even though she was the first to sin, since Virgin Mary gave birth to Jesus Christ, our lord and savior, Eve cannot be held accountable for the subjugation of woman based on her sin. Additionally, Speght argues Adam and Eve were originally created equal in the eyes of god. “Yet was she not produced from Adam’s foot, to be his too low inferior, nor from his head to be his superior, but from his side, near his heart, to be his equal… By which words he makes their authority equal, and all creatures to be in subjection unto them both” (Pg. 1654-1655). It was always God’s intent for man and woman to be equal, so any discrimination against woman is discrimination against God’s intent as well. Eve also never had any bad intent or was aware of any danger. She actually felt happiness after eating the fruit, and thought she should share this happiness with her beloved Adam. “Yet in her giving of the fruit to eat she had no malicious intent toward him, but did therein show a desire to make her
All of them have an effect on how the reader understands the meaning of the poem, and how well the poem’s message comes across. Repetition is used in the second and fourth line of Because She Would Ask Me Why I Loved Her, to draw the reader’s attention to those words repeated, and make them value the meaning of the lines that contain that repetition more. The couplet in lines 1-2 says, “If questioning would make us wise /No eyes would ever gaze in eyes”. The repetition is of the word “eyes” and it draws attention to the line; which means if they questioned why they loved each other, they would never look at each other the same way (they would no longer be together). This is a very important message that is carried throughout the poem, which is why the use of repetition is so important. Personification is used in the last line of the first stanza, where it describes kissing as two mouths “wandering”: “No mouths would wander each to each.” This connection between a human action and lips, which cannot actually wander, is a way for the author to describe kissing in a more descriptive way that provides interest and depth to the poem. Assonance is also used to alter the flow of a line, like it does in the first line of the concluding stanza: “Then seek not, sweet, the "If" and "Why"’’. “Seek” and “sweet” both contain the “ee” sound, as well as alliteration, to change how the line flows, and get the reader to read that line in a certain way. Having the lines in a poem flow easily makes it cohesive and complete. Lastly, alliteration is used in this poem to emphasize those words and the meaning of the line they belong to: “For I must love because I live”. That third line in the last stanza has the repeated “L” sound at the beginning of the two most important words in that line, which
“When the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was a delight to the eyes, and that the tree was desirable to make one wise, she took of its fruit and ate; and she gave also to her husband with her, and he ate." This text is at the heart of the question of who is to blame for the fall of humanity, even further on in the Bible we see Adam and Eve having the same issue of assigning blame.
The consistent pattern of metrical stresses in this stanza, along with the orderly rhyme scheme, and standard verse structure, reflect the mood of serenity, of humankind in harmony with Nature. It is a fine, hot day, `clear as fire', when the speaker comes to drink at the creek. Birdsong punctuates the still air, like the tinkling of broken glass. However, the term `frail' also suggests vulnerability in the presence of danger, and there are other intimations in this stanza of the drama that is about to unfold. Slithery sibilants, as in the words `glass', `grass' and `moss', hint at the existence of a Serpent in the Garden of Eden. As in a Greek tragedy, the intensity of expression in the poem invokes a proleptic tenseness, as yet unexplained.
The poet uses end rhyming to give the poem a sing-song quality which enforces that the speaker is a child. “Young, tongue, weep, sleep” are examples of end rhymes from lines 1-4. At the end of the poem the speaker switches the sound quality to assonance where he uses the non-rhyming words “behind, wind” (16-17), “dark, work” (21-22), “warm, harm” (23-24)” which are near enough in sound to hear the echo of the syllables but illustrate opposing meanings. “Work” is “dark”, being “warm” should not cause “harm”. “When my mother died I was very young, / And my father sold me while yet my tongue / Could scarcely cry 'weep!’weep! 'weep! 'weep!” (1-2). Repeating the words “weep, weep, weep” sounds like a nursery rhyme, chorus of a song or maybe even the ringing of an alarm. The poetic conventions used by this poet include two half-lines in each verse, separated by a caesura or pause. The half-lines are joined by the oral stressing of alliterative words in the half-lines, both consonants and vowels (Tharaud 34). “At least one of the two stressed words in the first half-line, and usually both of them, begin with the same sound as the first stressed word of the second half-line” (Donaldson 67). When a word was stressed in the first half-line, its alliterative counterpart was stressed in the following half-line; the words could either complement each other, like holy/heaven or sin/enemy, or they could contrast each other like happy/wretched or warm/winter.
